I understand if people outside the UK are unaware of them, but I'm surprised the Brits in here have never heard of them.

I've heard of them, if it makes you feel better. Not a massive fan, but would have preferred them to Blue. Wouldn't have considered them in any way likely to enter Eurovision, though.

i've heard of hurts.. nice song.. but in my opinion they will be one hit wonders.. the average age of blue is 10 years less than take that.. so they are all in their prime.. lee ryan is only 27! he co-wrote the song 'guardian angel' for andy scott lee.. that song missed out on being the uk choice for eurovision in 2005.. the uk sent javine instead.. i think lee ryan's song would have done better.. what do you think? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54uo4CRJpe0 if 'i can' (the song he co-wrote with duncan james) is anywhere near as good, then i have no doubt the uk will have a very respectable placing in germany..

People here (ex-USSR) know about Blue because of 1 hit (^speaking of 1 hit wonder  ), a cover... and mainly because they performed it together with Elton John.

We've had some articles in the press about Blue because of ESC (almost every ESC performer gets its 5 secs of glory here) but it's rather... old farts decided to re-unite (look at Backstreet Flops). Well, not in such tone of course but the accent was made on their former career.

As for me... former famous name can work only with a good song. I wasn't their fan during their debut but it's still a big name and it can bring some attention to ESC in the UK, so I'm happy for them.

ps. Hurts weren't popular in the UK like Blue, however outside of the UK Hurts' debut album was more popular than any album of Blue. I think Hurts are bigger in ex-USSR (top-3 and top-5 places in Ukraine, Russia, Latvia and Estonia) than in the UK  They became platinum in Germany (for the album and for "Wonderful Life" single), as well as #2 in Austria, Poland and Switzerland, #3 in Finland, #4 in Sweden, #7 in Denmark, #9 in Ireland...
Nevermind, just being famous doesn't guarantee the victory (not for Blue, not for Hurts). They better work on the song.

@ Aleks : You are actually right. But I personally know not only the hit "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word". I also like "All Rise", "Fly By", "One Love", "Guilty", and so on. And I have no doubt that the song they will perform on the Dusseldorf stage will be good

This boygroup-sugary-pop simply ain't what I as a 31-year-old can warm to. No surprises there. At my age, I'm not the target-audience anyway.

How is the british public & media reacting to the news? Is it mostly negative, positive or mixed?

Radio 1 interviewed them... Radio 1 never show interest in Eurovision so that's certainly a positive
It was the 5th most read thing on Sunday morning on the BBC News section
My mates all seem to have found out, majority with a positive reaction
Don't think it's been on the news tho xD

It was on the Red Button news the other day and in the entertainment bit on the BBC website, digitalspy etc.

They also got a second story on digitalspy and Radio 1's website with them defending their choice :p

And yes I have heard of Hurts xD

I guess before we make any hardline decisions, we really should wait for the song. I remember what some people were saying after ALW was chosen in 2009, and he brought the UK their best placing in a long time lol

But that song wasn't good though imo

Thanks to juries and a promotion tour they went top.5, I don't think they would manage otherwise.

Hurts are more Indie-ish in their musical style. They're not the mainstream pop that seems to be the taste of most of the other Brits on this forum (I'm basing this on FSC entries).

While not super-famous, Hurts are very well known in this country. The UKers here aren't necessarily the best sample population.

Actually I don`t know who this "Hurts" are. Not saying that they are bad, but that they are unpopular in Bulgaria... and from what I read in Romania too.

Oh my god! Their song Wonderful life is a big hit here until the fall. Everybody knows them ,everybody loves them! I am very surprised that you even don't know them when all bulgarian tvs and foreign tvs and radios broadcast their songs.
Believe me,they're VERY populas here and all over Europe.

I've heard of Hurts, but Blue is definitely a better choice :p

I think there's a 2nd motive for the BBC picking blue, many of the former blue fans will now be around the late teens early 20s. They want viewers around this age (most likely because of BGT on ITV), also with 2010 being one of the lowest watched eurovision's ever they need a band with a well known name to get some people watching again. Blue seem perfect for that, I think with a good song we'll be in the top 10 again :) Hurts, although fits the bill for Eurovision, won't get the brits watching.
