I am so happy that Jamala won yesterday, it is a stunning song! xlove
I think that people will think it is political, it is because any song from Ukraine this year would have a lot of focus this year, since they are coming back after the war. Though I would say that it is more historical and emotional than political. She doesn't say any name of who the agressor is, it is probably since she wants this to be applied to any event in the history or now, where people lives are getting destroyed. Sure, many people will start to think of the recent crimea crisis and Russia, and maybe even vote for the song for that matter.

But as many has written, it doesn't matter, the song is so strong that I believe a top 10 placement is in the bag for Ukraine. Well done and good luck in may!

At first I liked this song, but the more and more I listen to it, it becomes less and less great for me. It is too political for me and I always opposed Russian peace songs, which are political too.

It will qualify and score a TOP10 note, because it's Ukraine, but does it deserve it?

this is absolutely not a song for the big crowd. maybe they will have to change parts of the lyrics which are very political. i dont want to see a political voting between russia and ukraine in the end.

They won't share votes anyway, even if the song was a cartoon theme.

Jamala promised to improve the entry.
"I'll do everything what judges said to me, esp Meladze".
"I didn't intend to show the final staging right now. Everything will be changed".

It's got its nice moments but it is ultimately inconsistent and i'm not really a fan of songs with a "message", least of all in ESC. Her fiercely earnest look bores the hell out of me too.

Ukraine has made decision – and we see this country doesn't want to take their previous mistakes into account. Europe surely has tired of all this ukrainian whining and asking for support – but now they decided to brought it onto another level. Most probably EBU will allow this song to participate as it was for Armenia 2015 or another politically-aligned entries. But it is clear that Jamala will barely finish at top-15 – I see neither juries nor audience impressed by it.

I feel sorry for ukrainian eurovision fans - i talked to many of them and they mostly support Hardkiss and Sunsay bands which in my opinion are also a lot better than winning entry.

Welcome, Greenjolly-2.

I think the song is political however it's also very personal, it's about how her grandmother suffered in 1944 from Jamala's perspective, so it differs from Greenjolly's 2005 song or Armenia's 2015 song in my opinion. It's my first 12 this year, and i think she will have a deserved place in top 5 with a beautiful staging.

I loved the Jamala song at first listen and I strongly sympathise with the message. However I fear the result in Stockholm will not be great. "1944" will surely qualify to the final in the semi if not anything else so surfing a strong sympathy wave. In the final that wave will have faded so I think a below 10 result in the end. Still think it's a pity since The Hardkiss had the potential to win a landslide victory. Coming back a year later is never the same and the moment has gone.

Glad Ukraine finally picked this song because this was far superior to SumSay, but for some reason I'm not really into this song, even if Jamala is great. 5 points.

(surprised to such positive reaction )

Sure  But Loreen pretty much reinvented herself as an artist for the mello act. A thing I think she in a way regrets now in retrospect.

edit:
I may add of course I would love to see The Hardkiss next year as well. We can hope they'll produce an even better song till then. xcheer

Congratulations Jamala! Deserved victory xcheer

The Hardkiss really grew on me lately and switched places as a personal fav with Jamala, but I'm still satisfied as it was between the two of them.

The Hardkiss should have sticked to the more folklore visual though, the futuristic stuff looked silly imo... oh well...

Welcome back Ukraine!

I don't get why some people are complaining about the choice which Ukraine made last night, even so I do agree that both the Hardkiss and Jamala were amazing.
At this moment,'1944' is criticized about its political mark/message which is considered (for some people around here, not only on this website though) as a patriotic song whereas the Hardkiss' song is LOVED by everyone since they lost.
Erm.... what could I say about that????

1)Jamala's song is known to be a tribute for her great-grandmother who was deported in central Asia (if my memory isn't bad yet...) and the other Crimean tatars who were killed/persecuted by Russian (Again, my historical memory/knowledge isn't so perfect, so I doubt it's the main reason of why she wrote this song).

2)She won, and? She gathered an important amount of votes from the public, and that was well deserved, then nobody should ignore that she touched the public with her emotional performance, and not only with the political message of her song. Although I loved both the Hardkiss and Jamala, I think they could've both won the final because of their MUSICAL TALENT and not because of the POLITICS.

3) Even though I assume that everybody's tastes are different, there's a point in which we should all agree: Jamala won, and there's no doubt to think she will do quite great in Stockholm. Indeed, she deserves an equal respect, as each human beings should get.

4) Therefore the Ukrainian final is closed, despite the fact that you(including me) want to revive this moment again and again, but we have to recognize the quality and the power of this song, and let the rumours of withdrawing/disqualification of Jamala going away.

My final words in order to close this discussion about that would be: JAMALA! xbow xbow xheart

It's incredible how this song grew in me in just one day. I rewatched her performance from yesterday and she really touched me. I still don't like the verses so much, where her voice at some point gets to a color, that disturbs me, but this also contributes to the feeling of the song and matches the prevailing mood: it's not a smooth one, so I even start to like this strange, disturbing parts. And the chorus is really hypnotizing.
