No, I don't think that can be counted as prejudice either ;)

By the way, I've just thought of a prejudice against a tree! Eucaliptus! :D

Mass production has turned them into a rather unpopular tree, but people forget how beautiful and unharmful these trees can really be on their own, or in groups of two or three. They may look striking in your (large) garden or farm. Not their fault that Man is using them to such an exaggerared, and nasty, extent. So there you have it!

I would suggest that weeds may be a better example of prejudice against plants...

When I talk about prejudices is that we -esc fans- tend to think "this will do well" or "this will not do well" only because of the musc style.

Prejudice is definitely the wrong word by definition.

As a whole, the Dutch entry was underestimated prior to the rehearsals but immediately went up in the rankings. Nothing is for certain at Eurovision, all people can do is guess, predict and use prior experience & knowledge, then apply that accordingly.
It's not weird to predict a quiet country song may flop at Eurovision but due to superb performers the Dutch entry ended up as a major success.

Nobody knows for sure, sometimes we are right and sometimes not so much. The actual live performance can make or break a song and any prior predictions fly out of the window. Ireland had a painfully bad vocal performance and didn't even manage to make the Top 10 in the Semis despite it being popular in the odds and fan polls. And even stronger example is Israel which also didn't work live very well.

The Netherlands had the opposite effect (fortunately)

My prejudice about this song was that :nl: will be the darkest of all horses and I was so right. Why was I thinking that? Because not only I loved the songs so much but also non-ESC-affiliated people who only watch the Grand Final but not semis nor rehearsals liked that songs instantly....

Lol, it is possible believe me, but I'll give you another example I think we'll understand better. Chickens
There is a general accepted idea that they are stupid. Very stupid. In fact, we immediately connect the word chicken to this adjective even though you may not know anything about chickens.

Not true. When you actually get to know chickens (and roosters and hens) and get around to dealing with them you realise just how clever they can be. Granted, they'll never be dogs, of course not. They're not in the same league as they're not even supposed to be pets. But they've got their litle interesting ways, their organization, they can learn things, like although they stick to their habits they can be changed, and they can solve small problems in their daily life and get around them to reach something they wish. They're the most amazing birds really, if you stop to give them your attention. Turkeys, for instance, are much thicker. I love them too though anyway :D

See how unfair and prejudiced we all are against the poor things? I'm sure there are quite a few unfairly treated trees out there too, I just don't know that much about them ;)

most adorable post  :)

If there came a law protecting weeds all the gardens would go to waste. Not the same thing :D

Are we talking about garden weeds or.... you know...the other stuff

So glad that they've done so well! One of the highest charting ESC songs for a while, apart from Loreen of course :D

According to EurovisionInConcert's twitter page last time a non winning, non UK entry made it to the top 10 was in 1974!!!

The songs that made it to the top 10 in 1974 were the english version of Gigliola Cinquetti's "Si" and Mouth & McNeal's "I see a star"

Oh, can't wait to hear they are going to visit Poland. We gave them 12 so they should come here for few concerts!

Yesterday evening, Ilse DeLange was a guest in the Belgian talk show "Reyers Laat" on the second public TV-channel CANVAS (VRT).

An interesting interview, although Lieven Van Gils, the host, makes a really huge (in my opinion unforgivable for a journalist  ) mistake at the beginning saying that the Netherlands won the Eurovision Song Contest only once (and not four times). But anyway, thank you VRT for this interview.

At the end, Ilse brings a live version of "Calm After The Storm".
