Re: SPAIN 2016

wut. spain is actually understanding eurovision, unlike many other countries, but they are criminally underrated.

Nothing I've seen recently from Spain tells me they understand Eurovision, and the results agree with that.

Re: SPAIN 2016

I really like the chorus of "Dias de Algeria". The rest of the song lacks a bit a clear line, especially before the first chorus. All in all, it's the one I'd identify the most easily with Spain if I had listened to it for the first time without knowing anything about it.
So, I'd go for a spanish song in the first place either Maria Isabel or Beltran. I could live with Victorious also, but it sounds a little bit as if they had been thinking about Glorious as they wrote title and chorus....

I actually agree but I was trying not to start an argument. From a technical perspective, she was terrible. So no opinions there.

From a technical perspective, she was good. I guess you don't have many music studies.

From an artistic perspective, you are free to have an opinion, since this is subjective ;)

Re: SPAIN 2016

Spain is a lot better than UK, France and Germany. Maybe only Italy from Big 5 enjoys better entries recently, although sometimes they tend to be a bit overrated.

Yes, Spain is a lot better than UK or France (not difficult though ), but no way is better than Germany, not even close. Germany usually has one of the best NF, just the public suck at picking the best choice.

My ears are bleeding. What did I just listen to? Six nonqualifiers of Melodifestivalen 2012?

Re: SPAIN 2016

With Belgium missing out on a glorious opportunity to send something original, interesting and fresh, instead opting for a dance song with no melody it's now Spain's turn. I'll say it quietly but I love the song from Salvador. It has all the qualities I admire in an entry and the lyrics are beautiful too. Will it get selected? I doubt it. The lyrics for Barei don't make any sense at all. The others songs are poor, but if it has to be one of the others I would send Victorious, but it reminds me of a German song a few years back, what was it? Oh yes Glorious.

So that last note at the end, that was technically good then? The 3 or 4 times before that she missed the high note? I'm sorry, but that's just bad whatever way you slice it. I don't have music studies, but I do have functioning ears. I tend to trust what they tell me in regards to whether someone is singing well.

Re: SPAIN 2016

I was very optimistic after the 30sec snippets. Normally the whole songs prove to be better than the snippets. In Spain's case this in unfortunately not so.

I love spanish and latin flavoured music. I listen to latin pop quite a lot. Because of that I am especially let down by both La Vida Solo es Una and Un Mundo mas Feliz. The first is a really weak latin song. The rhytms are there, sure - but the melody is not very catchy, and even in the recorded version Maria Isabel's voice is quite flat and uninspiring. I prefer Un Mundo mas Feliz a bit more. But again; the whole song lacks something to catch my attention. This has been done so much better before.

Then there is the swedish song.... Why on earth should Spain, with it's big music industry and often distinct spanish flavour, choose another cliche Hero/Popular/etc-etc sound-alike?? And in english.... so to eliminate any doubt of the origins of this product. Please spare me, Spain!

Electric Nana sure is something different. It sounded very fresch in the snippet - but the full version becomes a bit monotonous, I am afraid.

Dias de Alegria. Very spanish to my ears. And as a lover of the spanish language it is soooo pleasing to listen to this! The refrain is good. Really good! I also love the start. My personal favourite. But I think that especially the televoters would be lost somewhere in the verse... so this would probably do better in my ranking than in the final ranking in Stockholm.

So this leaves the throne to Barey (?). She has an ok song, and it seems she is an able singer. I really like her voice! I love that she has a little rough edge - this makes to song so much more interesting!

All in all - I am quite content. But I often am - until the spanish public has had their say (Yes - I still mourne Brequette).

But are we going to Madrid next May? Hardly.

Re: SPAIN 2016

I don't really know how to rank the songs as I think the preselection is quite good overall (not like in 2014, which all the songs apart from Ruth and Brequette were crap), anyway this is my feedback:

- Barei: What I like about her is her unique style and voice. Some people are quite sceptic about sending it to the contest as it would be the first country ever sending a song like this in Eurovision, but I actually think the song itself is pretty good! However, I don't think it's gonna be elected as it's not commercial and Barei is not known in Spain at all.

- Xuso Jones: Xuso Jones has never been my cup of tea, neither his voice. The song is generic, very Eurovision. I reckon it would be fancy to my eyes and ears with a good performance, but I don't think this would do well in the contest... and I am afraid the Spanish public will choose him

- Electric Nana: My biggest disappointment. The snippet sounded promising, but the whole song is just so monotonous and boring. It will go unnoticed in the national final.

- Maverick: Against most of the opinions I have been reading I like this song. Weak? Well, all the songs we listen to in any Spanish club are not masterpieces, but they make you feel like dancing.

- Maria Isabel: The song is OK, she sings OK, nothing against her tbh. If she is selected a middle-table is guarantee, never top 10 but never bottom either. However, the more you listen to the song the more you like it.

- Salvador: Actually, the most Spanish song. Europe won't like it, and it will go unnoticed as well in the national final.

Summing up, either Xuso or Maria Isabel will be selected in the national final. Spain is not going to win for sure, but they will do better than last year (which is not really difficult).

I said GOOD. I didn't say she nailed it or she's Pastora Soler. Still, much better than many ESC winners.

And I do have music studies. This is one of the very few technical topics I can talk about ;)

Never say never. You can always come to Madrid in May and watch Eurovision live..... on TV of course..... live from Moscow, or Stockholm or somewhere in the North of Europe

And dont be so sure about the contest staying in the North of Europe (by the way; I dont think the Viennese people concider themselves northerners... )

Re: SPAIN 2016

After listening to all of the songs, I think I've settled on my ranking for this NF...

1st: Maria Isabel - a perfect blend of latin pop flavours and modern pop melodies, and I'm sure that this would get Spain a great result in Stockholm. xup

2nd: Barei - quirky but not annoying (see Electric Nana). I love the way this one builds gradually and I can imagine a lot going on to give this a spectacular stage performance!

3rd: Xuso - I'm placing this song in third place as my third favourite out of this selection, but personally I think it's the wrong choice for Spain. Any of the Scandinavian countries would do this kind of track miles better...

4th: Electric Nana - quirky track number 2, but it starts to grate on me a bit half way through. I think it would be a love it or hate it entry, and I don't think it would have the commercial appeal to draw in the big points with the voting public at Eurovision.

5th: Maverick - a bit more unique melodically than Salvador, although to be honest both were fairly inoffensive and probably wouldn't challenge for the top 10. Shame really, as on the radio I'd still happily listen to this any day.

6th: Salvador - I feel like I've heard this song a million times before from those compilation CDs you buy from El Corte Ingles - nothing original and again I don't think it would challenge for a high placement in the final.

So there we have it - Maria Isabel or Barei for Spain definitely!!! xpray

Re: SPAIN 2016

I'm kind of torn on Xuso. As a guilty pleasure, I like his song the most out of this NF, but it's so much more Swedish than Spanish that I don't particularly want to see it going to Eurovision. I wish they'd just had the lyrics in Spanish, or at least made it properly bilingual like Mas or Dancing in the Rain, since the one line sung in Spanish intrigues me...

Re: SPAIN 2016

Belgium, take notice: here is a NF similar to yours, but with actually decent songs.

Alright, let's see.

Barei: not a bad concept, but funny enough, while I usually don't like over-produced songs, I feel this one is actually under-produced: it is quirky, but lacks a big "something" to truly stand out; the chorus is too simplistic too. Overall, not a bad attempt, I can see why people like this, but a little more effort in the production process would have been useful. 7/10

Electric Nana: Funny, quirky, but I don't think is catchy enough; I love the Spanish bridge, I think it's very well integrated, but somehow it feels too predictable and safe. 7/10

María Isabel: I think this one is the best balanced between a Latin/Spanish sound with modern sensibilities. I can see this one actually becoming a summer hit in many countries. The production is top notch, but I'm not sure if María is charismatic enough to land this one. The chorus could have been a little more catchy. 8/10

Maverick: I love the sound and production, but damn, those are some incredible cheesy lyrics. It feels like the main theme from a Colombian or Mexican soap opera, with both the good (catchy as hell, cute) and the bad (odd phrases in the lyrics, too corny). 6/10

Salvador: Alright, so we have a very solid, promising start: this one sounds like it's going to go big... but then, it doesn't, at least not as I expected to go. The lyrics are decent, quite good, nothing extraordinary but at least are not as corny as other efforts. Nice chorus, very commercial-friendly, but even with good individual aspects, the whole doesn't "click" for me. 7/10

Xuso: If you're going to mimic the Swedes, do it, but do it right, because if you don't live up to the hype, you're going to be seen as just a cheap version of the original thing, and somehow, I feel this is the case. Not as cheap, tough, you can see effort, but still. Catchy, and with good ideas, but whenever I hear it, I just keep thinking "some Swedish guy could just do the trick, why do we need this?". 7.5

Overall, I don't think we're in front of a contender, but at least I can see some kind of ambition. With the right staging and production, almost any song of this NF could win 1 point more on the main event, so, not bad Spain, not bad.
