Re: SEMI FINAL 1 - DISCUSSION - 21:00 CET

Cyprus entry is much less effective on stage, my opinion. It gets so obvious that song is not made to being performed on a stage. And she was out of breath. I really think it was one of the worse when it comes to vocals quality.
do you believe me that I had something like that on my mind while she was performing?
I was more like "that's the trick with esc. it's live."

Re: SEMI FINAL 1 - DISCUSSION - 21:00 CET

Some interesting statistics:
Last ten ESC:s the average start number for 1:st, 2:nd and 3:rd places are
1:st place: 17.5
2:nd place: 12.9
3:rd place: 11.2

If you look only at the last five years:
1:st place: 20.4
2:nd place: 13.8
3:rd place: 14.6

Interesting! But if you look at the last 5 years both Lena and Rybak would have won from any position. I'm very convinced about that. They just happened to have high positions (22, 20). If they instead had positions 3 and 4, that would have made the average 13,4 (which would have been under the natural average of 13,5). Still between 13 and 22, but in the long run I'm convinced the average could be only slight above the middle. I mean, some winners just would have won with any number.

Maybe Azerbaijan's fortune was the late number, and maybe that's why Bilan won too, but when it comes to Lena and Rybak... and Molitva? It would have won from any position too.

Maybe starting position doesn't tell us anything. The chances of a low number, after all these high numbers, actually should be very high, if it will even itself out in the long run.

'LOL' :( at 0:35 when the reporter just ditched (and forgot) Rona when he saw Ivi passing by :(

And of course there's Chatward's quackquackquack at the end.

Of course it could all just be by chance. This is statistics, so the numbers may very well be lying. However since they first introduced televoting in 1997, the average starting number for the winner has been 17.066. And 15 years is a pretty good sample. I think especially people watching at home can be affected by starting numbers, whereas I think and hope jury's are not affected.

I agree some winners would probably have won regardless of starting number, but then again we will never know for sure.

Just to be clear: starting numbers may have nothing to do with success, but on the other hand there is a very strong correlation between winning songs and later starting numbers.

Re: SEMI FINAL 1 - DISCUSSION - 21:00 CET

In my opinion (and surprisingly) these were the countries that deserved to qualify:

BEST PERFORMANCES: (in random order)

:al: ALBANIA - Truly awesome. No words to describe this. Yesterday I didn't like this, now I'm quite impressed and really went up, up, up in my personal ranking
:md: MOLDOVA - GREAT performance, one of my BIG favourites tonight!!I liked it before, LOVE this one now!
:gr: GREECE - Comparing to other entries, this worked quite well. Sounded much better than CYPRUS, which I thought impossible... I didn't like it before, now I think it's catchy. Far from being one of my favourites, though.
:ie: IRELAND - Perfect performance and was a blessing comparing to others. Will probably reach top 10.
:is: ICELAND - BEAUTIFUL and strong.
:ro: ROMANIA - GREAT!

I didn't like: (also in random order)

:cy: CYPRUS - This one didn't work... I even thought it wouldn't qualify. I didn't like it at all, sorry. :?
:ru: RUSSIA - I have no words to describe it. Yes, the grannies are sweet, and that's the only good thing about this. Israel should be instead of this one.
:hu: HUNGARY - I used to like this one. Now I think it's just average and unconvincing. :?
:dk: DENMARK - VERY unconvincing. I thought this was really boring...Not at my top 10 anymore. :?

SHOULD HAVE QUALIFIED:

:il: ISRAEL :(

BIG DISAPPOINTMENT:

:fi: FINLAND - Boring performance... :(

LOL at you praising the Twins, Smile!!! I feel so happy when people can be unbiased and they can see they are two professional entertainers no matter how much they dislike their music. Their performance was marvelous. I wasn't expecting that good. #1 in this SF.

the thing that bothers me the most with Jedward is that they are here again. with same clothes, hairstyles, dancing moves. again. I liked them last year. this song isn't bad either, performance was fine and all, but it's just one big re-run.

So, what song became your break? I guess you had one?

I really wanted to give every entry one last try, but I just couldn't sit there when Israel came. It was so much whining, and whining, and whining. Such an awkward noise. And it wasn't a bit funny either. My definite last place this year.

I have to say Belgium. sorry Belgium :(
at one point (early on) I stopped listening and became more interested in database errors here than in performance :(

Exactly right. It's the exact same thing, only with less catchy (and worse) song and with a garden sprinkler this time around.

Re: SEMI FINAL 1 - DISCUSSION - 21:00 CET

My review after the first semifinal:

:me: I already knew what was going to see before starting the performance, but I have been snorting during all the 3 minutes. Crap, crap, crap. One of the most desorganized and ridiculous songs I've ever seen in ESC. I give it 2/10, and not 1 because at least they made me pay attention to the TV at that moment (I had no alternative).

:is:Although I didn't like the song and, actually, I don't like it right now, I must accept that they have done a great performance: strong voices, performance and ending. They deserve to be in top 10, but I'm not so sure about it. My score: 7/10

:gr:Cheap song, cheap show, cheap dancers and cheap performance. Oh, I didn't realize that the girl is cute and she can dance. How many times have we listened to this kind of songs? It would have been really nice in 2005. But nowadays? I still can't understand why this have gone through and others like Switzerland or Austria are out of the contest. My score: 4/10

:lv:Well, I have to admit that despite I like the song the performance has been trash. Every dancer has done their things in their own way, and she has not sung as well as I thought she could do. Poor Anmary and poor beautiful song, but it was forecasted before performing. 5/10

:al:Fantastic performance (the best in terms of realisation), but her voice could have been much better. She's had few problems reaching the highest tone of the song, as well as the chorus. Her best performance of the song was the one in the nf. Fantastic anyway. I give 7/10 to the albanian song.

:ro:I suppose that as I am Spanish I should be very happy to listen to a Spanish song in the contest. Shouldn't I? I'm sorry but I can't. The lyrics are not my cup of tea, but it doesn't matter because nobody understands them (or almost nobody). The singer? Limited voice, dull, and moreover, she's paid more attention to her earpiece than to her performance. The only think I've liked are the musicians. That's why I give it 5/10

:ch:So sad it has not gone through. His live singing has been totally perfect, and the song is not that bad. Poor Switzerland, they should withdrawn. 6/10

:be:Soooooo boring. In the first minute of the song she's been out of tune. Afterwards, nothing surprising. A probable bottom 4 of the semifinal. 4/10

:fi:Another forgottable balad after Belgium. And one having an adverse effect on each other. I expected something different in the performance, as well as in the dress and background. 5/10

:il:I have enjoyed it to be honest. The singer was quite weird, but the performance has been fun. I loved that clock in the background. And they have sung quite well... So predictable they didn't go through the finals, though. 6/10

:sm:Valentina already knew that nobody would vote her. Her face reflected that. And then? What about the hostess who has interviewed her just to make people laugh at her? I think it has been quite humiliating. The performance? What everybody expected: terrible. But at least I enjoyed it. Didn't you? 5/10

:cy:Good dancing. Good coreography. Good performance. Weak voice. It could get a higher position, but her voice is not good enough. I predict somewhere between 15-20. 6/10

:dk:In the first minute I thought she had lost her voice. But later I have been able to see the good vibes during the performance, and this could get a great number of votes on Saturday. I have liked it as well. 6/10

:ru:May they win? Should they win the contest? Could this be good for the contest if they win it? I'm wondering all these questions because I think they probably have won the semi. And they can win the whole contest. So, so fun. Fantastic performance in which Russia has taken all the advantage as possible of these endearing and cute grandmas. Love it. 8/10

:hu:Between Switzerland and Hungary I preferred the first one, but good for them. The song is good for these who like that kind of music. I personally don't like the song and the performance either. 4/10

:at:One of my biggest favourites and it's out. So predictable, though. It's a kind of song that you can love or hate. And the fact is that people haven't loved it enough to vote it. The performance has been worse than in the nf, above all in terms of realisation (I couldn't see the third popo in the corner). 7/10

:md:Moldova seems to know how the contest works out perfectly, and they do the kind of performances which people will vote. They can send the crappiest song in the world, and they will do the kind of performance that people will like to make it go through. Bad song for a very good show. Congratulations once again, Moldova. 5/10.

:ie:The biggest surprise of the night. They can sing, or at least the backing vocals were good enough to make it sound good. The waterline is something new, so they will be able to reach more votes thanks to this. A great performance which will end up in top 10 (or maybe top 15). 7/10.

So my finalists would have been: Russia, Iceland, Albania, Ireland, Austria, Denmark, Cyprus, Israel, Switzerland and Latvia.

Re: SEMI FINAL 1 - DISCUSSION - 21:00 CET

There were no real surprises last night in terms of those that qualified. However I did think that Ireland and Denmark would be shock non qualifiers and they passed. Also find Hungary being the band that happens to go through a little unexpected.

Rona's performance did funny things to me. Whatever words I can think up won't do it justice and I think everyone already knows how much I love this entry with a burning passion.. so I shall shut up:lol:........................ BUT GOD WAS SHE SENSATIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!xcry

I only wanted Finland to pass instead of Moldova, because Finland song is amazing! But Moldova, nothing special. Really looking forward to see SF2, because this one was really weak. 3 listenable songs :D
