Some quotes of the Finalists:

Serbia

The first artist to take questions was Nina from Serbia. Virtually every artist was asked about how they felt about making the Final.

"I hope I will do even better in the Final" said Nina, "and that it will be as magical as the Semi-Final. It was just amazing, and it was just great to be first to be in the Final."
Lithuania

When Lithuanian representative Evelina discovered she had reached the Final "I jumped high into the sky. I hope in an hour or two i will realise what has happened."

Evelina expressed her sorrow for those that hadn't reached the Final, a sentiment that several other artists also mentioned when talking about how they were feeling this evening.
Greece

Loucas Yiorkas and Stereo Mike from Greece, also congratulated all ten of their fellow finalists. "I gave all my sould, and for the next thirty minutes I was empty. I gave my soul and I thank you so much."
Azerbaijan

Ell and Nikki said "it was a pleasure and honour" to know those that hadn't made it to the Final "we wish them good luck and we will miss them, but the frfiendship continues."

One fan commented that Nikki looked nervous before going on stage tonight. She replied that "I was excited beforehand and my daughters were watching me and it was so important not to fail."
Georgia

The first question for the Georgian artist Eldrine was whether she thought the kind of songs in the contest were the sort of songs that it took to win the contest, or songs that represented the culture of the country?

"Some represent their culture and it is very good, and I'm proud that our product is Georgian."

She was asked whether she had expected the result, and whether she had any favourite for the Final?

"All of us hoped to be in the Final and it is an achievement, but i didn't think about it. it was a shock, and it is great. I want to thank all people. I have favourites, and there are some very strong songs." However she siplomatically didn't mention those strong songs by name.
Switzerland

Anna was asked what her thoughts were before going on stage? "I was very nervous, but it is so cool to be here. Thank you for voting for me. it is just so hard to say and I can't imagine that I'm in the Final."

She received the ultimate accolade, when someone asked her if she was Switzerland's next Celine Dion? The remark went down very well with all concerned, and all Anna could say was "Thanks!"
Hungary

Kati Wolf was asked about what she thought about when performing in the arena, when she saw and heard everyone standing, clapping and dancing along to her song?

"I heard a magical voice from the audience, it was amazing for a singer, and I think I am dreaming now."

Did she have any message for her fans who supported her? "Thank you, and do it again on Saturday" was the repy from Kati,
Finland

It was pointed out that Paradise Oskar was the youngest competitor in the contest, and he was asked what he had learned tonight about showbusiness?

"I'm very grateful that people voted for me to be in the Final, and that there are so many other good songs in the Final."

He hadn't thought too much about it being a competition, but that it was "an honour, and I'm having fun singing. I'm not thinking that far ahead. I can't think about winning."
Russia

Who had been the first to congratulate Alexej, and what was he going to be doing the next morning? Was the question put to the Russian singer. There was speculation that it might have been his dog that he brought along with him!

"I will sleep" was his reply to the latter part of the question. "It wasn't easy to wait for Russia to be in the Final. I want to thank everyone and there are lots of good artists not here, and I applaud them."

The Russian party was scheduled for after the First Semi-Final, so had he been confident of qualifying, otherwise the party might have been something of a non event.

"It wasn't easy. i didn't know what would happen. i am happy to have the party, and to have fun. Sometimes everyone should have a dream, and now that I'm in the Eurovision Final, I am very happy!"
Iceland

It was pointed out that this is the third time that iceland has been the last enveloppe to be announced in a Semi-Final, and inevitably the questions were related about being the last to know their fate.

"There were so many talented artists, that we were cheering and enjoying oursleves. We are happy to reach the Final for Sjonni."

"We hoped that our song would touch some people, and that we should live for today. None of us know how long we have," they recalled referring to their late friend "we just had the hope and just cheered when it was revealed."

Hey everybody!
First of all, congrats to all countries. They did their best. Every artist that goes on stage has something to say with his song and tries for the best. Don't be so harsh when judging... I believe it's quite unfair to say that some deserved to be in the final (and they are not) and some didn't (even though they are). It's like saying that the people who voted are just plain stupid. I voted for 2 countries because I thought they did a good job (Turkey and Poland), but apparently many people thought otherwise. What does that mean. That I know better and they don't? Who knows what the televoters think! What they feel when they hear a song.

Anyway, all 19 deserved it, but qualified those who had better appealing to the audiences. It's so simple. I am happy for Loukas (yes, if someone could kidnap Stereo Mike until Saturday would be perfect) and I can't wait for the second semi and for Saturday's final!

The heart beating before every song reminded me of the greatest Superbowl Halftime show ever:

Poland: Quite ok, but perhaps a bit forgettable. Can't remember the melody.

Norway: I like the idea of some African rythms, but with such a dull verse and a poor vocal performance (sounded like she had the flu) I'm not surprised they did not pass.

Albania: I did not know Tina Turner had died, risen from the dead and coloured her hair red. In a way I liked it, but it was perhaps too scary to go through.

Armenia & Turkey: I figured both would go through because they usually do and the songs were not among the worst ones of the night, but both sounded bad live.

Serbia: This is no winner, but the song makes you happy, and who can resist those retro colors?

Russia: Sleasy guy, but I can't say Russia shouldn't be in the final.

Switzerland: I was a bit worried about Switzerland because she didn't sound as good live as in the studio-version, but glad to see her in the final. This is a REAL song without gimmicks.

Georgia: Noisy song and ugly costumes, but very well performed.

Finland: I did not think both Finland's Da da dam and Switzerland's nananananana would squeeze in, but they did :p. Really annoys me that people call this a Tom Dice-copy. I believe there were about a million singer-songwriters in the world before Tom and Oskar. What about the genres we hear year after year? Aren't they copies? As with Switzerland, this is a REAL song without gimmicks.

Malta: Strange melody imo, but at least the guy was happy.

San Marino: Audio only, this is actually a decent song, but I guess San Marino never stood a chance. Her strange facial expressions made the last glimpse of hope vanish.

Croatia:

Iceland: I assume all the announcers told the sad story behind the song, because that's probably why it went through. Personally I think it's a bit charming, but would not vote for it.

Hungary: This is a favorite? Catchy song and all, but wrong artist (and maybe wrong country) for a top-5.

Portugal: A bad joke of course.

Lithuania: This was the biggest shock for me . On Saturday this is when I'll go to the toilet.

Azerbaijan: The milf and the toyboy. Polished song and coreography as always. For me, empty as always. It doesn't make me happy, sad, angry, annoyed. NOTHING. Big time "middle of the road" for me.

Greece: Worst, rapper, ever. I'm not saying it was THAT bad because the other guy sang very well, but I really believe that Greece could have a guy walk out on stage, take a dump on the floor with some greek rythms in the background, then walk off stage, and they would be in the final.

I guessed 7/10 finalists correctly. I had Norway, Turkey and Armenia instead of Finland, Iceland and Lithuania.

I‘m really happy that Iceland got through! Obviously I am, since I‘m an Icelander, but the whole country and our Eurovision specialists were very pessimistic on our behalf, and maybe quite understandably. Our song isn‘t really outstanding at all, but I‘m started to like it more and more as I get used to it. At least it‘s one of the few songs in this competition that actually sends a message, and that‘s why I‘m happy for ourselves as well and Finland, which is my favorite.

I don‘t know if you guys are familiar with the story behind the Icelandic song, but the singer and man behind it, Sjonni Brink (hence Sjonni‘s friends) passed away tragically at a young age in January, only a few weeks before the song was due to participate in the Icelandic semi final. Instead of dropping out, it was decided that his best friends and many of Iceland‘s most terrific singers would participate on his behalf and honour his memory, for he was a great man.

The Icelandic nation is known for sticking together, there are only 320,000 of us and we are a really united country. So we felt that the least we could do was to honour a good man‘s memory and send this song through, and it ended up winning by quite a large margin. Yohanna, our 2nd place competetor from 2009, also had a great song, probably much better in fact, but we didn‘t really mind whether we got through or not, because we know that this matters a lot for his family and friends. So I am personally very happy that we got through, even though I would have understood if we hadn‘t. But I hope you guys realize that there is so much more to this act than only the song itself. It was our chance to get his message across the universe and honour his memory.

Amazingly, this is the third year in a row that we‘re the last country to be announced into the finals. We were also number 10 with Hera in 2010 and with Yohanna in 2009, so it‘s quite a funny coincidence but I can guarantee you that we‘re getting kind of sick of this! :) It always makes it fun though, when you‘re deprived of hope and then suddenly your country‘s name comes up and everyone goes crazy! :)

Anyways, it was quite a bad semi-final in my opinion but now we can all look towards the finals, at least us in Iceland are excited, although we don‘t expect to be one of the top countries on the list! But it‘s okay, we did what we felt was right in our hearts! :)

Rest in Peace Sjonni, I hope wherever you are that you are happy with the result!

And yeah, as for this semi finals and my two cents on the songs that got through, here it is:

Greece: I found this song to be quite chaotic, the rapper was absolutely horrible and ruined whatever in this song that was good. The singer was good and the chorus was not bad, but I didn‘t really feel that this song had any order and that‘s why I‘m disappointed that it got through, although I do realize that the Greeks seem to have a free-pass to the finals.

Finland: I‘m really pleased that this song got through, I absolutely loved it! I know that it‘s a bit of the same formula as in Tom Dice‘s song from last year and I admit that it‘s not quite as catchy, but honestly, how can anyone dislike this song? It‘s a catchy melody with a beautiful message and frankly, it‘s simplicity makes it outstanding in my opinion. So I was convinced that Finland would come through and I‘m glad I was right.

Switzerland: This was also one of my favorite songs. Strong vocals and I admit that I‘m more into this kind of music than to the Eurotrash many of these countries were bringing this year. I would have been greatly surprised if this song hadn‘t gone through.

Russia: This one I expected to go through. The singer was definitely not above average but it was a solid performance nontheless and the song was energetic and classy. The song kind of reminded me of Klaas, except with more singing over it. Overall, no surprises here and I guess it was well deserved. I don‘t expect this one to be one of the top songs though.

Hungary: Probably the only pop song I really liked in this group. It was powerful, energetic and had a catchy melody. I was sure that this one would go through and frankly I‘m also pretty sure that it‘s going to do a good job in the finals. The performance was kind of mediocre though and she needs to step up her game if she wants to end up as a winner, which I believe is possible. A good song definitely.

Lithuania: Definitely powerful vocals, but the song itself was awful in my opinion. Or I wouldn‘t go as far as saying awful, but it was forgettable and would be suited for a musical rather than a competition like this. In fact, it really reminded me of The Little Mermaid, I don‘t know why. In my opinion she should not have gone through, even though she‘s a terrific singer, because there is nothing to this song and I guess it profited of being one of very few ballades, so those who like that kind of music voted for this one.

Georgia: Honestly, I can‘t believe this song got through. I didn‘t like it at all, but I admit that the chorus was decent. The rest of the song was crap in my opinion and the rapper was almost as awful as the one from Greece. But it was powerful and energetic and that seems to be enough to get the votes from Eastern European countries, so I guess this was somewhat expectable. Not my cup of tea at all though.

Azerbaijan: I expected this one to fly through and it did. I can‘t say I love it, but I admit that it‘s a good song and the performance was nice as well. It doesn‘t spoil it that the girl who was singing is gorgeous and I‘m sure that got them a few points. It could do well in the final but still, it‘s far from being one of my favorites.

Serbia: Man, I can‘t say I liked this one. The singer was not bad per se but I felt that the song was pretty forgettable and there wasn‘t anything about it that impressed me, to be honest. The singer is obviously very confident in her own ability, but rightfully so, but I would be disappointed with Europe if it got that far.

Iceland: I‘m not neutral on this one of course, but I think this song deserved to go through. If not for the song, then for the story behind it, although I realize that this is indeed a song contest. But compared to many of the outrageously awful songs that were performed last night, I‘m really happy that Iceland got through but I‘m not too optimistic for the finals.

The surprises of last night are in my opinion that Norway and Turkey didn‘t go through. As we all know, the Turks are almost guaranteed a place in the finals and I didn‘t believe that their song was that awful, I was sure they‘d go through. But I admit that the singer was not good at all and he kind of ruined a decent song, sadly.
Norway, I was sure they‘d go through. The song was good and the dance was nice, but it wasn‘t to be. I guess it might be because of the singer‘s lack of quality, although she was not too bad in my opinion.

Those who say that Poland and Albania should have gone through should get some hearing aids, because those songs were both very bad in my opinion. Although the worst ones were definitely from Armenia (are you bloody kidding me?), Malta (oh man..) and Portugal (obviously used Google Translate because many of those signs were wrongfully translated..and the song sucked).

That's stupid.

If it isn't a good song performed well, it should not have qualified, no matter what th sobstory behind it was. Someone died, whoohoo. People are actually alive are being unfairly overlooked just because people feel bad for Sjonni.

My dear neighbour, if you would have finished reading my sentance, I noted that this is indeed a song contest :) And I also stated that if we remove the story and all that, I still believe that it should have gone through, as it was a decent song and definitely performed well, so yeah I stand by that opinion of mine.

That's doesn't change the fact that you said that the son deserved to go through, if not for the song's quality, then for the sobstory. So it doesn't matter if you then go on to say that you think it made the final on quality alone.

Because you just said that songs should pass through to the final on nothing but sobstories, even if they are bad.
