Moreover consider also that he was still selected as their representative despite he was publicly opposing Putin's policies! So, can we say that Russia is really so undemocratic as some want us believe... You know, I would never expect an outspoken opponent of the state's policies to represent Russia in such event which is obviously very popular in Russia. Honestly, I am seriously questioning Western media reporting about Russia and Russians... Those small details I can gather on my own simply do not fit the general picture that is sold to us in the West...

He was chosen because he was effective. Many gay fans cheered for Russia instead of booing and the fact that he has expressed criticism of Putin's policy in the past made him a more effective propaganda tool. He was more believable claiming that life was fun for gay people in Russia and that all is fine there. He is most likely a gay guy in the closet, isn't he? He was chosen to stop the booing and to get the support of the fans since they couldn't be won over with last year's peace song. Russia didn't win but stopped the booing and now they can represent themselves as the victims of the evil West again in their own media, which they love to do. It wasn't a complete success but they already achieved a lot. They can point out that the West loves Russia and that only the bad juries that are controlled by the Western governments stopped Russia.
Of course, Ukraine winning is an epic fail for them.

btw, 12 points for Sergey:

from the juries:
neighbors: Azerbaijan, Belarus
fans of Greek composer Dimitris Kontopoulos: Cyprus, Greece

from the televote:
ex-USSR/diaspora: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine
Russia's little buddy: Serbia
others: Bulgaria, Germany

I don't know why Germany supported him. There is a large Russian diaspora but is that enough?

So your winner is mostly the winner of other Russians and of those that support Russia politically.

I am expecting to see Russia in Ukraine next year. And I am expecting another good entry from Russia!
I hope they will be treated fairly. That includes no booing.

I wonder if the audience will boo again next year. Russia is not too popular in Kyiv, as we know, and Russia will obviously not get any favors from the broadcaster next year. Number 2 in the running order wouldn't surprise me at all. After all, someone has to get it, Russia never had it and the Ukrainian broadcaster doesn't have to apply Björkman's philosophy.

Well if Russia has a good result in the semi-final the EBU would never allow them to get #2. The top 3 of the semi-final always get good draws in the final because they are the contenders for the win.

That's Björkman's system. The broadcasters are not obliged to do that. Officially, the the draw isn't random anymore to create a balanced running order, not to support the favorites. They can put Russia in second place if they want.

The reference group has the final say in the running order. And I think they would want the top countries of the semis to have good draws.

We can only wait and see but Russia getting a good draw every year is very biased. I wonder if there will be an internal conflict because the EBU might want the Ukrainian broadcaster to give a better draw to Russia than the broadcaster would like to provide.

As said above, I too expect Russia to return with a superstrong act and putting them in the number 2 position wouldn't matter a bit. The common meaning seem to be if the running order have any impact at all on the final result, it is on the weaker acts, say bottom 15. I also think the organisers will put so much effort and energy in hosting the contest they wouldn't like to have it disturbed by petty bullying. I think Russia will have to prepare itself for subtle symbolisms in the interval acts though. How the Russians in general choose to handle that is very much up to how their perception of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine looks like I think. After all Russia is at de facto war with Ukraine, people are dying, suffering and having their well-being and future destroyed. The conflict also having a huge impact beyond Ukraine, not the least in the Baltics and my own country. So yes, Putin comes with a price for the Russians, there's no way around that fact.

If you discount Serbian minority votes, he actually won also the Slovenian televote. So, I really do not see how this fits your conspiracy theory... And we surely dont have Russian diaspora here :)

On the other hand, yep, you must be right, he is closeted gay, Putin put a gun at his head and said he should go to ESC and convince those flashy gays there how nice he is to us, cuz Mr. Putin has no other important business to do (like solving crises around the globe that USA started). Yep, very convincing theory. Oh, yes, and Russians really want to host ESC in the current situation of embargo... Because they have too much money. But this is the least problem, cuz these horrible Russians would only raise the prices of gas to Ukraine and poor Ukrainians would have to pay for the show... This is how it works in Russia and elsewhere only angels and more angels live on this planet :)

You are making me laugh... Have a great week Chorizo.

Liking Russians (with or without Putin) seems to be a crime in this forum.

Where do you see a conspiracy theory? Where's the conspiracy? I pointed out how countries voted and what Sergey achieved. That's hardly a conspiracy.

Putin doesn't solve any crises. He only starts them including the war with Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea. I'm sure he has enough people that work for him in his ministry of propaganda, so he doesn't need to do everything by himself. I never said that Sergey was forced to participate but if you participate for Russia, it is your job to spread pro-Russian propaganda.

Russia was desperate to win this year and now that it didn't work as planned, you deny they even tried? You must be a really sore loser if you want to convince yourself and others that they didn't even want to win in the first place. If Russia had won, you would probably pity the poor Russians now who didn't want to win the contest.

Have a great week too! :)

Congrats on winning the televoting in such a situation in Europe and Russia now...

This is really the biggest success of the ESC 2016..

Jury is much, much easier to win..

You can like or dislike the fact, but Russia is the biggest winner of 2016 ESC..

12 from German televoting says a lot I guess..

Winner of the people. Was up there in my top 3 from the final performance, and would have loved it if he could have got the victory. My heart sank for him a little at the end, when he was waiting to see if he got enough points. Bravo Sergey.

Well tbh I don't see the hate spam against Russia which is/used to be a recurrent feature in the Swedish thread. I know the feeling though.

Well, you must forgive us, we envy you. That is all, surely, no-one hates Swedes for being Swedes :) But success always brings the envy of others, you must forgive us.

Even I have to admit that despite really really disliking Mans last year, he was quite a good host this year - and above all, I loved it that you made fun of yourselves in such a cute way. I think only the most normal people who are down-to-earth are able of making such jokes. So, this year, your hosting and the whole show was in my view a total success for Sweden cuz you presented yourselves as very humble and super friendly fans of ESC :) And Petra, she was superb. I really loved her facial expression when our jury member, Marjetka Vovk, tried to sing the points out. It was almost as though Petra wanted to say with her face: Petra, keep it together, dont laugh, this woman will sing, she is still harassing us with those stupid headphones, I cannot believe it, she will embarass herself, don't laugh, this ridiculous :) Basically, great show, no, the best ESC show until now :)

Well, Chorizo, if Russia keeps bringing such hot propaganda every year, I will say only: I am gladly the victim of their propaganda. I want more :)

I am pretty sure Russia won't withdraw.

Actually, it doesn't seem to me they really care if they are booed or not. Maybe that gives Russian TV even more energy to compete. :D
