Moreover consider also that he was still selected as their representative despite he was publicly opposing Putin's policies! So, can we say that Russia is really so undemocratic as some want us believe... You know, I would never expect an outspoken opponent of the state's policies to represent Russia in such event which is obviously very popular in Russia. Honestly, I am seriously questioning Western media reporting about Russia and Russians... Those small details I can gather on my own simply do not fit the general picture that is sold to us in the West...
He was chosen because he was effective. Many gay fans cheered for Russia instead of booing and the fact that he has expressed criticism of Putin's policy in the past made him a more effective propaganda tool. He was more believable claiming that life was fun for gay people in Russia and that all is fine there. He is most likely a gay guy in the closet, isn't he? He was chosen to stop the booing and to get the support of the fans since they couldn't be won over with last year's peace song. Russia didn't win but stopped the booing and now they can represent themselves as the victims of the evil West again in their own media, which they love to do. It wasn't a complete success but they already achieved a lot. They can point out that the West loves Russia and that only the bad juries that are controlled by the Western governments stopped Russia.
Of course, Ukraine winning is an epic fail for them.
btw, 12 points for Sergey:
from the juries:
neighbors: Azerbaijan, Belarus
fans of Greek composer Dimitris Kontopoulos: Cyprus, Greece
from the televote:
ex-USSR/diaspora: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine
Russia's little buddy: Serbia
others: Bulgaria, Germany
I don't know why Germany supported him. There is a large Russian diaspora but is that enough?
So your winner is mostly the winner of other Russians and of those that support Russia politically.
