Re: RUSSIA 2014

I'm here to discuss about Russia at Eurovision Song Contest. I know the situation is serious and complicated, but we are here -in this forum, in this thread especially- to discuss about Eurovision Song Contest, and we don't decided if Russia or Ukraine should withdraw or EBU should impose sanctions to these countries... Please, enjoy our favourite show, and leave political differences aside.

Ok, I think it would be curious to see Victoria Petryk here. We would have a similar situation to 2009... Also I heard about Sergey Lazarev. This weekend -I hope- we will be sure. :D

Actually, no one was off-topic so not sure what you're talking about xshrug

The discussion was highly relevant...

Just because we don't decide, doesn't mean we can't talk about what should or shouldn't happen. We don't decide who will represent a country, but it doesn't stop us from talking about it all year long.

Many people complain about it because Eurovision Song Contest -according to them- is politicized. Maybe it's true, but now -with these behaviour- we are contributing to politicize even more. Conclusion? The impaired image of the festival.

It's called to add fuel to the fire.

That's something entirely different though.
What fuel are we adding? Russia cannot and should not expect to do what it's doing, turn around and play a victim, complaining that people are mean to Russia. They have literally invaded another country. This is beyond petty politics that's usually present in the ESC. And I don't know how you can separate one from the other.

Oh, come on. They have done it once in Georgia, and what happened? and besides the USA has done it too, in Iraq for instance. Why do we have discuss all this in this thread?
Anyway back to the topic, I have no idea who is gonna be selected, any hints?

Unfortunately the contest is politicized...

But I draw parallels to the 1990's when Serbia was actually banned from entering international events like ESC for a decade, if you think about it there's an ethical point of view here and that's what we discuss. Should a country that has invaded another ESC country be represented in the contest and use that platform to show-off like all is fine?

I think not... but people can have different opinions on this of course.

USA is not in ESC, and the contexts are completely different.

We ARE on topic though, it's sad people are unwilling to understand that though (regardless if they agree or not).

Well ok you are all in topic if you say it like this but we can talk about the entry and the singers and not for the politics or what this is?

What does US have to do with anything? Besides, last I checked, USA wasn't trying to annex any territories from Iraq.

The fact that Russia's done this to Georgia and nobody did anything has only embolden them to go further and do it in Ukraine. If others continue to stand aside and do nothing, where will Russia go next?

And we discuss it in this thread because we don't think Russia should be allowed to take part. It's as on topic as anything else in this thread.

What is happening with Russia?
Will they internally select or have a NF like they planned?

First of all we don't know anything about entry or singers yes... so there's just so much that can be said on it.

And actually, discussing whether it's ethical to allow Russia in ESC this year or not is very relevant and on-topic. As I've said many times already, we already had a case with Serbia which was banned from international events (including ESC) due to political reasons... so calling this discussion off-topic is like calling Eurovision history unrelated to Eurovision xshrug

Yes, I understand, and -as I said before- we are worried for that but... I insist, we have a 'beautiful' thread to speak about these topics. Here, the main topic is 'RUSSIA AT EUROVISION SONG CONTEST'. Probably, they are connected, but -in my case- I would support Russia if I like their song. Why? Because, above all, that's a song contest. Remember.
