A mate of mine watched this Semi 2 with me tonight. He is no Eurovision-fan so I thought it would be interesting to see how he viewed the different entries. He had some of the same favourites as me (San Marino f.ex.) but also some different ones (Bulgaria f.ex.).

His biggest outburts came, however, when he watched Iceland. His words were (translated from Norwegian): "What a load of **** Is it a joke!? They look like high school students putting on a show at school with third rate choreography.."

When I told him it's one of the favourites and very well liked by many in the Eurovision forum I frequent, he said "They have obviously lost their minds!" :ROFLMAO: Just shows that music taste differs.. :ROFLMAO:

Or maybe it's just a matter of life experience - about knowing what self-deprecating humor is, playing with genres and nostalgia -- things like that. If you try to understand Iceland's entry literally, you don't get what it's about.

I was just watching the recap and at the 137:29 mark one of the backing singers totally surprised me by making a noise that is so remarkably like a cat's meow, I couldn't let it pass without comment.

Yes, or perhaps he is right (he is in his mid-twenties btw).. who knows, as I said taste differs ;) Personally I am no fan of the entry either, just not my style, but I don't have the strong reaction to it that he had.. :ROFLMAO: was kinda hilarious..

Waking up and reading the running order ... I have absolute NO clue what to think about it, even after I read the comments here. The only thing I am happy about is the spot for Italy. And I laughed hard when saw the two middle-fingers next to each other, even though Germany will be butchered at this spot. Oh well. My main focus is on Italy and Ukraine now. And France. poeple were saying that the spot for France between Azerbaijan and Ukraine will hurt France, but since her performance is so intimate, it will stand out, I think. But Malta is out, I feel.
Let's see what happens tomorrow. I think I will vote like crazy for Italy and Ukraine and hope that one of the both will win. The last winner I agreed with was Rybak, 12 years ago. It's time I can go to bed with a huge smile tomorrow evening again.

This post is a fantastic idea.
BTW, Spain's moon is not CGI. It is a balloon (Melanie took a photo of it deflated).

Also as wind machines will be used to clear up lingering smoke (at least around Greece given the green screen but maybe in general) that is kind of an indirect prop for some acts.

poeple were saying that the spot for France between Azerbaijan and Ukraine will hurt France,

The favs are surrounded by various less popular songs this year, so none of them has to worry.

Like I said, they went from their "fav - less popular act - fav - less popular act" scheme of the past years to "six favourites and the twenty fillers". Imho they chose it on purpose to make the favs stand even more out . Yes, there are some favs at the end quite close to each other but there are a lot of popular songs in the second half and they have to place them somewhere. People after France only watching Azerbaijan and Norway because of Efentix, so that’s the plan I guess! ;)

What I see here is Portugal...It's a threat. In the sea of upbeat songs performed by females, this will stand out. It has already received a lot of attention and love last night, this might do REALLY well.
And I agree with previous comments, Sweden has a terrible running draw, the fact they perform second to last means little, look at the songs around them.

Was pretty underwhelmed by this semi. I liked Austria, and France looks great (I've yet to hear the song in full). Glad Denmark made it too, even though it's so daggy (in a good way). Daggy pop is definitely a legitimate style now it seems (see: Iceland).

Silly me forgot you can't vote in the semi your country isn't in. I guess I forgot that after the cancellation last year. The Aussie commentators (Joel and Myf) kept mentioning the non-existent chemistry between the guy host and the woman, which was funny. At one stage he said something about going home already and I swear she was about to say "I wish you would". :ROFLMAO:

I was surprised too when the other host (the tall one) gave her "tips" for a good Eurovision entry, considering she made disparaging remarks about some previous entries (as evidence) including Hatari. That was uncalled for and unbecoming. Be positive people!

Hopefully Eurovision will be back with normal conditions (a standing crowd) next year. Sorry that the Netherlands had to go through this. They've done well, considering.

The draw is so weird. It's like the producers want maximum clash between the powerhouses.

Russia, Malta back to back
Switzerland, Iceland back to back
Ukraine, France back to back

Italy is the only odds fave not paired up with another odds fave

Sorry to MrLordi above, but I thought Finland lacked authenticity too. Not a great hard rock/metal-esque (whatever) entry. Apparently they hate the term "metal" according to Joel and Myf. Presumably because they think they're above 90s pop-metal, which they're really not!

Either this is supposed to be on the prerec vocals thread or if this is an appropriate thread, but I keep thinking of how the juries will rate entries this year, based on the fact that prerecs have been used heavily throughout the contest. I suspect it'll be virtually the same, but lemme know your thoughts!
