Can't believe this is the same Festival that gifted us "Mea Culpa" by Catarina Pereira.

RIP super hit. xcry

But for real this is the sort of diversity i'm talking about. Their 2014 NF while not the best was far more interesting and more over, fun, compared to this. We can hardly argue that this is better for them either as out of 3 it gave them a last in the final (for sure DNQ if not PQ) and then another DNQ. Salvador was a literal exception to the rule. Portugal really need to step it up because FdC is just SO boring and forgettable for another year. Considering many seem to hype Portugal now though for whatever reason then they have 0 incentive to change or show a real diverse selection of songs.

Can you elaborate on the lyrics?
there are some parts where he is talking about everything he wants is to be a good father and good husband and that god #blessed him with a queen and two kids. and the name of the song seems like it's a mix between blessed (abençoado) and dreamed (sonhado) - it's also used in the name of a book from a mozambican author but i haven't read it so i don't know if it's related. and he is not mozambican.

most of the parts sound fine but these verses ruin the experience for me

This year it seems RTP has 'listened' to their public. I feel the lineup reflects more of whatever is popular in Portugal right now (although I need someone to confirm this).

This sentence applies more to this edition than to previous ones, that's true. When I saw Jimmy P in the list of composers I actually thought the selection would have more rap and hip-hop, but fortunately it is only Jimmy's song, which is interesting lyrically and musically better than most of the rap we have. Low quality and senseless rap is really popular here in Portugal at the moment, specially among young folks.

Bárbara Tinoco became popular recently with a song she has composed and written for The Voice Portugal, and Tiago Nacarato was also a former semifinalist and he has good radiofriendly songs, I really enjoy him. I would prefer Tiago to Bárbara...

I was really hopeful of what Dino D'Santiago was going to send, but...

Really underwhelming selection  The more I listen to the songs the more my diasappointment increases. I would like to see "Rebellion" or "Cegueira" representing us, I feel those two are the only ones that can grow on me.

It's true we still have unique entries you can only listen to at FdC, but imo the number of meh songs with meh lyrics is very high. I'm really upset since I was expecting for more. But that's what we have.

I really like this selection. RTP is putting a lot of effort and I think composers are also leaving the "Festival" mindset. We have tons of diversity, it's super trendy from a portuguse music scene point of view.

I really like a lot of the songs. Blasted is amazing but I was actually hoping for something stronger.

I would send Bárbara Tinoco to eurovision, because I think overall she is the one that could please both the public and the jury. Throes + The Shine are really good too.

But honestly... a very strong selection. And we still managed to keep our portuguese flavour!

So, let's hear how the songs sounds like in one of my fave NFs recently - FdC (with a score 0-10)! :D

"Rebellion" Blasted 8p
Oh, this is something new for FdC! Fresh rock song with interesting balladic verses. I really like this. Maybe too complicated to work in ESC perhaps, but I really like this. Gives a slight The Hardkiss (Vidbir 2016)-feeling. :)

Diz Só" Kady 6p
Very 90s caribbean in this song, not bad, despite not being a genre that I usually enjoy. But it has a nice vibe, thumbs up!

"Não Voltes Mais" Elisa Rodrigues 3p
A little too anonymous to work for me, but it has a decent melody that is pretty cool.

"Gerbera Amarela Do Sul" Filipe Sambado 2p
Also a little too complicated for me, lacks that little extra, but also has a nice vibe to it.

"Abensonhado" Jimmy P 4p
I really like the verses but I wish the chorus were stronger, WAY TOO SIMPLE. Sadly, cause this could be a killer song verse-wise, for a non-portuguese speaker this sounds ridiculous.

"Copo De Gin" Meera 3p

I don't know about this either. Just feels like a song in the mix that has nothing to do with the high places. Just is there to be fair.

"Agora" JJaZZ 5p

Interesting modern jazz song that ain't bad. But I can't see this qualify either to be honest. But I enjoy it for what it is.

"Dói-me o País" Luiz Caracol & Gus Liberdade 5p
This is a pretty cute and decent song. Doesn't make a big impact, but is bringing something else. Oh my, then the rap comes, that was unexpected, but helped the song a bit to be fair. Weird, but stands out more.

"Quero-te Abraçar" Cláudio Frank 0p
This is a bit too sleezy for me. The english parts is completly unnecessary, makes the song worse than it is. Not my cup of tea.

"Cegueira" Dubio feat. +351 7p

This song start off really similar to something that I can't think off and then the beat and guitars comes in and it becomes a completly different song. This is good, I like this. Very mysterious and makes me intrigued for more.

"Cubismo Enviesado" Judas 1p
This start off so promising and then it is just....Ves Ou Nao......not once...not twice...69 years later xfaint

"Passe-Partout" Bárbara Tinoco 8p
This is different! French and fun, really stands out this year! I like this a lot. Interesting to see how this will look live! :D

"O Dia de Amanhã" Ian Mucznik 7p
This has a very 70s nostalgic feel to it and I enjoy it quite much actually. Very laid back and makes one dream away for a bit. :)

"Mais Real que o Amor " Tomás Luzia 4p
Gosh the verse is really similar to some old swedish songs that has been inspired by latin songs, but can't pinpoint which at the moment. The chorus is a bit cheesy though, sadly. If it works live it might be a decent song, but for now, it is just okay.

"Movimento" Throes + The Shine 8p
Good melody in this song, makes me wanna move along to it. Quite different and intrigues me to know what it is about. I like this a lot, and very unportuguese seeing history-wise in ESC, which can be an advantage perhaps. :D

"Medo de Sentir" Elisa 9p
Oh, this gives me a little goosebumps. Really promising ballad, modern, deep and still atmospharic. Very nice instrumentally, could totally see this be a huge jury fave, both in FdC and ESC actually.

A pretty weak line-up comparing to the last years for Portugal, but the quality has been crazy high those years, so a slight set back might not be something to worry about. There is though a few songs that I really like, especially from Blasted, Bárbara, Throes + The Shine and Elisa, where the latest of those four is my winner before the live shows. But maybe something comes out of the blue and grab everyones attention, guess we'll see what happens.

Absolutely loads to love here, yet another fab FdC, but it has a huge problem and that is that Semi 1 is wayyyy stronger than Semi 2. If they could have six qualifiers from S1 and two from S2 it'd be perfect.

Realistically, I think it's between Barbara (Passe-partout) and Elisa (Medo de sentir) for the win, but Filipe Sambado, Jimmy P, MEERA, Ian Mucznik, JJaZZ and Dubio will all get repeated plays from me.

Oh, Rebellion was a disappointment though. The verses and the organ led up to... that.

I must be the only one that absolutely hates "Rebellion". It's just awful and I really don't get the hype at all!

Juries will most likely ruin its chances of going to Eurovision anyway. Plus I don't want Portugal to end its streak of singing in Portuguese. :pt:

Movimento seems a grower, like Soldi was last year. I'm still not 100% on board, but at least it's refreshing and stands out in this selection.
I'm warming up to Cegueira, I love the instrumental
Abensonhado starts good but we wait too long for something to change, and in the end it leads to nowhere.
For now I'll go with Rebellion as my #1, but I'm a little put down by the verses after the chorus. I wonder what it would have sound like in Portuguese.

Overall the selection is enjoyable, but a little too dull. Everything seems the same... hence I don't have a clear favorite.

I'm jumping on the Medo de Sentir train. It has the exact type of build + climax you want from a song like this.

Luiz Caracol & Gus Liberdade - Dói-me o país

Cute lil' song with a surprise hip part which I dare say almost doesn't work here (I'm usually all over surprise hip bits).

Blasted - Rebellion

Woah, two songs in and already Portugal delivers something bold and unique. This song has a lot going for it. The organ section with the rap is an xheat moment for me. If the rest of the song was built around the energy and vibe of that bit then I think they could have a serious competitor on their hands. As it stands now it's quite a strangely structured song that I think will bewilder and confuse people as much as it's going to turn others on. I personally loved it though from the first listen. This is really good (even with the slightly cringe-inducing Greta Thunberg sample at the beginning). Made me think of my fav hip hop collective, Doomtree.

Cláudio Frank - Quero-te abraçar

This is bless and inoffensive, but it's not going to do anything at the contest. Those English lyrics as well "I want hold you. I want love you" awww.

Kady - Diz só

This is nice and smooth, chill. I wasn't getting slayed but I don't think that was the purpose. Just nice warm vibes. It's a no for the contest though. Portugal would struggle with this big time.

Dubio feat. +351 - Cegueira

Weird one. It's got some clever elements going on and I kind of like when the guitar comes in but the whole thing sounds like a demo.

Elisa Rodrigues - Não voltes mais

I find this one mildly irritating, although there are elements there to appreciate for sure and when things melodically switch up at the 2 minute mark I'm into it. Overall, colour me confused.

Filipe Sambado - Gerbera amarela do Sul

That hypnotic intro got me sitting erect for what I assumed would be three minutes of body slayage. I didn't quite get that but it was still enjoyable, if a little underbaked. Charming bit of melodic madness though. It was all over the place.

Judas - Cubismo enviesado

Dem deep fart synths. Chorus is fricking lazy, which is a shame as overall I like the vibe and the production. Nice percussion.

Jimmy P - Abensonhado

It can be hard to judge rap when it's in a language you don't speak, as it's an art form where lyrics are everything. To my ears though this sounded quite great, with the song only getting stronger throughout the 3 minutes. It builds well. Must investigate the lyrics.

Ian Mucznik - O dia de amanhã

This is how I love my ballads. I become the most basic of bitches imaginable when it comes to dreamy 70s inspired Lennon-esque balladry. Hook it to my veins. This was just so lovable. The Beachwood Canyon psych-tinged fantasy of that chorus. Probably a not so smart idea for Eurovision but I wouldn't care or worry. You'd be doing it for me xheart

Elisa - Medo de sentir

This feels contemporary and has got a bit of kick to it, which I think is very important. I appreciate the route Portugal has been going down but opting for something like Medo de sentir could be rewarding all the while staying true to themselves. I'm personally not crazy for it just from the first listen, but I notice its potential.

MEERA - Copo de gin

Sounds like a South Korean WorldVision song @anaraqueen would rock to my 8 semi points withxheat I stan. This is funky, fresh and neon drenched.

Tomás Luzia - Mais real que o amor

God bless those warbly diva male vocals. This is sort of sweet. It floats around a bit in the middle of nowhere but those almost over enthusiastic vocals keep my interest.

JJaZZ - Agora

Nice mellow vibes. The trumpet is an underused instrument. I think this song has its charms, and its lively for what it is. Could do with better production though (as many of the songs here could).

Throes + The Shine - Movimento

I'm not particularly into this, but in this selection it's a breath of fresh air. Hmmmm I don't know..

Bárbara Tinoco - Passe-Partout

This is kind of a darling little song. We've literally stepped into a time machine. It's cute.

So basically Rebellion for more risk taking, O dia de amanhã to please me and no one else, or Medo de sentir to give yourself a break from always making things so incredibly challenging for yourselves. Personally I'd opt for Rebellion cause this ESC is already shaping up to be a slow, ballad filled one. I want to say Copo de gin could work too but ultimately I think it would be difficult. Juries could be there for it but that would be it.

REBELLION REBELLION THIS IS A THIS IS A REBELLION!xamandalearsmile

Blasted - Rebellion
Well I think is is a super interesting addition to the FdC which we have experienced for a long time and quite a c hange it is, I like it and i'm interested on how can the staging and live performance could work. Maybe we are in for a poissble good treat!

Filipe Sambado - Gerbera Amarela do Sul
Well this sounds weird af! I do get some indie vibes mixed with Mozambique/Angola somehow

Ian Mucznik - O Dia de Amanhã
Sadly this would not fit in ESC but he did feature in a romantic movie during the colonial rule in Angola xthink

Elisa - Medo de Sentir
Defiently will compete with Blasted for FdC winner, it does have improvement in the classical slow tempo FdC had traditonally faced and it something that could be a possible grower

MEERA - Copo de Gin
Pleasent 90s/2000 vibes, I will confess I yet to try a gin

JJaZZ - Agora
Jazzy sleepfest!

Throes + The Shine - Movimento
Similar to Blasted with the weird vibes coming for FdC and I like this a lot, I say it could do well to in the final. It gotta be an addition to the FIFA games music selection

Bárbara Tinoco - Passe-Partout
Oh my, Cute af! Defiently beats UK attempt in the time machine

Luiz Caracol and Gus Liberdade - Dói-me o País
Im not really sure on this tbh. Defiently something that could fit right in probably with TV but then the rap ruins it

Cláudio Frank - Quero-te Abraçar
I dont think English lyrics helps your case matey

Kady - Diz Só
Pretty alright but in ESC can it do well?

Dubio feat. +351 - Cegueira
Pretty cool vibes, I love the sudden electric parts!

Elisa Rodrigues - Não Voltes Mais
Would Nandos accept this?

Judas - Cubismo Enviesado
Oh lord oh mighty

Jimmy P - Abensonhado
Quite like this rap, the song itself has heavy emotions possibly sad 1s seeing 'Im Sorry Mama' I would like to see this on stage with the gospel choir as background it will certainly elevate the song pretty well

Tomás Luzia - Mais Real Que O Amor
Pretty sweet, got some Portuguese vibes which i appreciate a lot but thats all sadly it will not do well

Portugal, you give me imagination. I imagine all the time great stage shows for a couple of these songs. Also, we do not have Conan, an obvious choice like last year. It will be tough
