Mikaela Minga has listened to the songs.
Blasted - Rebellion: I was about to say they are cancelled for singing in English, but the song is pretty interesting. All the parts succeed each other in a rather jarring fashion though. My first listen was enjoyable, I'll probably come back to it to figure out how much I like it. It does have a slight "Telemoveis" feel here and there.
Kady - Diz Só: A cute little song that has a beat, yet remains quite quiet. I don't dislike it, but I expect something more impactful for the contest.
Elisa Rodrigues - Não voltes mais: I don't know about this after one listen, it's a bit "dry" instrumental-wise for me and I don't feel charmed by the melody. I like bossa nova, but this song in particular? I'm not sure.
Filipe Sambado - Gerbera Amarela do Sul: This one has rather interesting elements, although it's not a case of love at first listen. The melody is not the easiest to grasp overall. And it drags on a bit I must admit.
Jimmy P - Abensonhado: Rap in Portuguese! I was like "okay, I'm waiting for the hook", but this chorus in English is a no. The lyrics might be the best part, because melodically it is lacking imo. It's not for me.
MEERA - Copo de Gin: Cute vibe. I dig the beat and synths. The singer has a nice voice too. I guess it could grow on me with the right live performance.
JJaZZ - Agora: ok, this one probably has minus chances of winning, but it's one of my favourites I think. I dig the mix of electronic light beats and jazzy influences. It's intricate, it has layers and it doesnt' get boring at all to my ears. Wow, well done!
Luiz Caracol e Gus Liberdade - Dói-me o País: it's fine and pleasant to listen to, but not really my vibe. Ooh a rap part? What?! That low-key worked though.
Cláudio Frank - Quero-te Abraçar: Another cute little song that I feel wouldn't be competitive enough for the contest. It drags on a bit due to its repetitiveness though.
Dubio feat. +351 - Cegueira: oh just from the first seconds, I dig the vibe already! This has attitude, changes of pace and instrumentation, which could keep the listener engaged in it. I find it really good.
Judas - Cubismo Enviesado: this one stands out due to its beats, I don't dislike the vibe here but this one-line chorus is lazy af. It kinda ruins the rest to me. Ok, it's way too repetitive, WTH?
Bárbara Tinoco - Passe-Partout: what do we have here?! It feels very musical theatre with its strings and throwback arrangements. I respect the effort because it stands on its own feet and offers something different in the lineup, but I just don't like it. Sorry Bárbara!
Ian Mucznik - O Dia de Amanhã: Ok, it's a slow ballad whose rhythm doesn't really do much for me. Again, I can't say it's bad, the vibe is there, but it's lethargic. Not really exciting.
Tomás Luzia - Mais Real que o Amor: finally a melody I can grasp and enjoy. This guy has a nice voice. Oh wait, it's got the Olga Lounova syndrome: the chorus is really a let-down compared to the charming verses. Why? Whyy--yyy--yy-yy? Pity, I could have liked it, I can't with this telenovela chorus. And it ends very abruptly.
Throes + The Shine - Movimento: ok, the beat is sick. It is more spoken than sung, but I kind of dig it. The instrumental is addictive as heck! Grower alert! I like this! It's refreshing!
Elisa - Medo de Sentir: a ballad. As a ballad person, I should be receptive to such a song, but it's not really doing much for me sadly. It sounds pretty standard. And Elisa's voice isn't unforgettable either. Meh.
Overall, I'm not gonna lie and say this is a super strong lineup, because I don't think so. However, I really appreciate that Portugal brings entries that mix modernity, tradition and diversity. Most of these songs are typically Portuguese and I like that.
Now, in terms of standouts, there are just a few of them, and imo only one that could actually leave an impression in the contest, and I think it's Blasted's "Rebellion". The only thing that sucks about it is that it's the song in English. Otherwise, I think it's got an instant impact, it has a distinctive mood and it definitely has different parts that could keep viewers' interested. There is potential for grand staging as well.
Apart from that one, I really like:
2) the delightfully jazzy "Agora"
3) the crazy "Movimento"
4) the surprising "Cegueira".
"Passe-Partout" stands out for sure but I don't like it at all. The rest is just too forgettable in my book.
I have spotted a couple of growers, but "Rebellion" is in a league of its own imo. Definitely.
