I think Portugal has good chances to win! It would continue the tradition of Eurovision winners always being the complete opposite of the previous ones. While 1944 was a very progressive song that maybe even sounded quite disconcerting to some people (not to mention that it has been sung by a woman which makes Salvador stand out even more), Amar pelos dois is a rather "old-fashioned" song that can cause nostalgic feelings, emotions and memories and sound somehow familiar to many viewers. Many juries will probably also like it because it's different and sticks out without being obtrusive in any way. Salvador is a good singer and a "complete vocal failure" can almost be ruled out. In an interview his sister said she had an idea that would help to make the viewers understand the message of Salvadors song without making him fade from the spotlight or something. Salvador himself will probably still be the "main attraction" and take centre stage. This kind of performance would set him apart from most other power ballads with busy stagings and, obviously, all uptempo songs. The fact that the song is completely in Portuguese might also help to earn bonus points from the juries, wittingly or unwittingly. I could also imagine people voting for Portugal because they've had a very unlucky and unsuccessful past at Eurovision and now that they are actually one of the favourites to win it would be of little help to pass up this opportunity - anyway the average viewer probably won't know that unless it's mentioned by their commentator.

I have something to get off my chest: I'm worried. Not about how this is going to do, but about what the experience of Eurovision is going to do to Salvador himself. He seems like an intensely introverted person uncomfortable with too much of the spotlight being on him, as seen in his reactions during the FdC results and that incredible performance on Page 114 of this thread. I'm not sure he knows what he's getting himself into, and it may be something that overwhelms him a bit. Contestants not realizing just how much attention they'll get during Eurovision and struggling through it is nothing new (see: Agnete, Kati Wolf, and plenty of others), but he seems like he could be one of the most severe cases therein. It's a shame that he needs the time off for his physical health because it would be really good for him to get some experience at a promotional event or two with a Eurovision-style audience sans the pressure of 200 million people on the other side of the camera. Hoping for his sake that the Eurovision experience will be humbling rather than harrowing and that he can squeeze every ounce of enjoyment out of it.

oh i think salvador will be fine. he seems to have a good sense of humour judging from the videos i've seen of him. i don't think we'll have an agnete type of situation with him.

I understand your comment and it's actually pretty sweet the level of concern shown in it. xkiss
But from what i can tell, we have nothing to worry about. Salvador is actually a very well grounded guy. He knows these things come and go. In a recent interview, he was asked about the fact that his concerts are now packed here in Portugal and that never happened before. He thinks this is great in order for him to promote his work... but he also knows that this can be just a momentary thing.

Some fans here in Portugal are actually more concerned about him not showing that level of enthusiasm that you'd expect from someone participating in ESC. (i love that about him)
He just acts the same as before, taking it with no pressure whatsoever.

Don't worry. He's gonna be just fine.

I was literally crying yesterday when I've read the lyrics (for the first time!). So beautiful. So emotional. Aww, I can't believe Eurovision has now this song in its history. I wish all the best to Portugal, Salvador was third or fourth in my ranking, I think now he's first.

Y'all're putting me at ease. If he's 100% enjoying it so far then I have high hopes he'll continue to. :D

Which reminds me, is there any way of getting hold of those recent interviews and translating them? I'd love to know what has passed beyond the language barrier. Any links, etc?

This song is liked only because it's sung by a Portuguese guy... if it was sung by a Maltese girl, everybody would hate it...

Nope.... most people here dont care about the singers sex. But the fact that it's in portugese (and that it's from Portugal) is probably helping, I agree.

Fun fact: If "Amar pelos dois" was performed by Salvador's sister, Luisa Sobral, who wrote the song for him (and has performed it with him on occasion), it would still be my number 1 this year. If a Maltese girl could sincerely convey the emotions of the song and manage to make my heart flutter in the same way then I'd love it too. Malta were my number 1 in 2015. Weird you point out we only like it because he's a "Portuguese guy". Aren't Portugal one of the most unsuccessful Eurovision countries of all time?

I think if Salvador had boobs and was called Salvaleena you'd enjoy the song, and would be declaring it as "innovative and original". You only hate this song because it's sung by someone that has male body parts.
