Salvador Sobral is one of the most popular Festival da Canção winners in decades -- and that is a good and a bad thing. If he gets a good place in Kyiv, Portuguese people will see him as a savior (that's funny, cuz his name literally means savior in Portuguese ) But if he fails, people will just stop watching Festival da Canção and ESC here in Portugal, making all of RTP's efforts worthless. Seriously, this is getting way bigger than Vânia Fernandes in 2008 (and that was a big thing, but not even this close). Newspapers are writing about the Festival, Salvador's song is being played on the biggest radio stations, his debut album is now #5 in Portugal, his latest show outsold...

I mean, this isn't normal. Just look at Leonor Andrade. People only started to know her after she released "Strong for too long", and the majority don't even know that she represented Portugal in ESC. And although she has somewhat of a career, she's not really that famous. She has some fans, played in one of the biggest summer festivals here, but that's it.

I don't know if this means something, but the truth is -- he touched people's hearts the way no other Festival da Canção winner of the last 20 years did.

That RFM radio performance... I almost don't have words for how beautiful that performance was. Absolutely spellbinding. Gosh, these two are just aching my heart so hard. I love when Salvador plays mouth trumpet. I had my eyes closed at the time and I thought the ghost of Chet Baker arrived. So damn sweet when he almost goes "Zingaro" on us during his little solo and realizes he's over done it, and curls up embarrassed, laughing. It's actually crazy how much he channels Chet here.

Funny, random-ass story that no one will probably care about, but in my teens years, like Salvador I had a Chet Baker obsession. I hunted down every record I could find, bought the documentary film "Let's Get Lost" that apparently Salvador was addicted to watching. I even purchased myself a damn trumpet and tried to teach myself how to play it. I wanted to be Chet. I haven't heard a single artist who caresses a song in the same way that Chet does until discovering Salvador. It's uncanny and so, so beautiful. All these memories are flooding back of when jazz music was everything to me, and I guess you never lose it. Right now I feel like i'm catching up for the years in which I moved away from it.

Salvador Sobral said he never watched the Eurovision Song Contest!!

You know, it's kind of refreshing to hear a participating artist say that. Almost every press interview asking the artists about Eurovision goes something like:

Interviewer: 'Have you watched Eurovision in previous years?'
Artist: 'Oh, yeah, sure. I'm a big fan. I've always loved it.'
Interviewer: 'So, what's your favourite song from the contest?'
Artist: *Awkwardly pauses while struggling to remember song titles*
Artist: *Invariably names one of either ABBA, the previous year's winner, or an old entry from their own country that ended up popular in the charts over there*
Interviewer: 'How interesting! That was a great song. Now, moving on...'

Thank you, Salvador, for being one less of those interviews this year. I've heard the same exchange a thousand times already, and can quite happily do without #1001

That could also be a hint that the new formula of Portugals National Final really works! It's not lika ''You Decide'' were the produces searching for song to fit into the ''Eurovision-bubble''. The portuguese is going for Italy's approach, to represent portuguese quality music for the mainstream audience. This entry is a good beginning.

Well.. reminds me of Raphael Gualazzi who didn't even know about the existence of ESC before he took part :D

Eurovision is not for Jazz artists ... He probably considers ESC an adventure.. like trying something new and getting worldwide attention with the music he's creating. But yet I am sure he won't become an ESC fan even if the is gonna win this shit.

Not only Raphael Gualazzi but also Nina Zilli, Emma, Marco Mengoni and probably Il Volo didn't know much about Eurovision. But I think it's normal in Italy  Francesca was a true fan since 2011, loved her approach to Eurovision xlove This year with Gabbani we have another singer who basically knows nothing about Eurovision... I find this either positive and negative

Yeah, I guess so. I was very shocked because almost every entry of Portugal in the 60s - 90s is a classic here, and as such I think it's very rare to find someone 25+ that has never watched a single Eurovision! For younger people is more normal, as obviously the Portuguese fate in the last couple of decades has been absolutely terrible
But hopefully this year, with the hype being built around the entry, a lot more people will watch the contest, and the popularity will grow again!

I think that our jury will vote for Portugal a lot this year..of course depends who will be in the jury, but of those crucial names in jury (former ESC participants), and always is some of them in the jury, Marija Serifovic, Zeljko Jokimovic, Jelena Tomasevic, all appreciate these type of songs and would've vote it 100%! ;) especially Marija, i'm sure, I know she likes songs with such emotion and special vocals! :)
