I've already said how much I love this song, and now i'm just overwhelmed that i'll get to see this performed at my favourite contest. Jazz was my first love and passion, and once jazz has touched your life, you can never shake it, as much as I like to declare myself a rocker today... It's the jazz man! That's what it's all about. It still gets to me and can make me cry like a baby whilst paining my heart. I grew up worshiping the vocals of Billie Holiday, Chet Baker, Patty Waters, Nina Simone and contemporaries like Melody Gardot. It's something so deep in my heart and not many people understand it. I always felt like an outsider listening to jazz, as though I was in my own little world that was fading away around me. To hear a piece like "Amar pelos dois" performed in 2017, to see the support it's received from all corners and the general appreciation, well, it touches my heart deep. I have to pinch myself that a song like this is going to Eurovision.

The composition is simply exquisite but it's the soul and sincerity that Salvador brings that turns it from something beautiful into something extraordinary, filled with genuine warmth and longing. I ache and swoon so strongly when listening to it, and often tear up. The way he lives the song is the mark of a great jazz singer. You can see he feels every word through his body, and that he is one with the piece of music. It's spellbinding to watch and to hear.

This sentimental old (for 26) fool hands over the biggest 12 he's ever given. This is some Suus/Maybe tier hot sauce in my book. You don't even know how much I love you right now Portugal. Thank you for this gift. I've not been having a good few weeks and have been so down. This is just what I needed and then some. I have this gentleman to look forward to in May. It's actually happening! I'm so filled with emotions right now. Thank you.

For some reason Semi-Final 1 seems to end up much stronger than Semi-Final 2 every year

Hmm, well not for me, I think semi 2 is more often stronger than the first semi. I remember in 2014 I felt it was semi 1 that was stronger, but somehow it felt disapointing with many songs I liked prior didn't work out live, so in the end semi 2 became stronger. Last year it was pretty even though, maybe with a slight advantage for semi 2. For this year, we will see, there are still many songs to be announced and picked, things can change.

RainyWoods, so happy that you got a superfave of the year, maybe as you write ever. :D
I am not the typical listener to Jazz, especially when it becomes too experimental and "annoying", but I do often, mostly in the autumn, enjoy a nice jazzy song from time to time. Melody Gardots "Baby I'm A Fool", is something I every year put on when the first autumn rains comes, and fills me with a total feeling of cozyness, loneliness, love and takes me to an another place and time. I do enjoy a few others of the artists you mention, maybe not as a big fan, but can put on one or two of their most known songs.

As you say, this portuguese song is really doing the same as the classic jazz songs. When I hear it and see him, it takes me to Lisbon in the 1920s, it is spring, early summer, love flows with the wind and even if it might not be the best of times, this song assures me that everything will get better one day. xrose

No words can describe how thrilled i am right now. Simply over the moon. I'm very honoured to be represented by this beautiful gem. So charming, so genuine, so magical! I honestly think we have a very good chance to surprise. Congratulations Salvador. Work hard because we need a memorable performance in Kyiv!

Beautiful words Schlagermanxheart I love listening to all of Melody Gardot's music. I even have a rare cd she recorded as therapy after recovering from her life changing accident. "Baby I'm A Fool" is beautiful but I tend to lean towards her very melancholic numbers like "One And Only Thrill" and "If Ever I Recall Your Face". The moments you describe when you listen to jazz are the moments I cherish for listening to jazz, those rainy afternoons and such. A lot of people don't realize how beautiful the genre can be and stay away, thinking it's all trumpets and scatty, all over the place music, but that's just one side of the genre.

Billie Holiday is probably my all time favourite jazz singer. I remember as a child spending my entire birthday money on a 10 disc 200+ song Billie Holiday Verve years boxset which was kind of crazy:p I was so into jazz from maybe 13-20 and then moved onto rock and folk, but whenever I hear a beautiful jazz song my heart aches again, like it did all those years ago.

I'm still in shock a song like this is going to Eurovision. We have the juries to thank but the public still placed Salvador 2nd and the general fan reaction is beyond what I could have expected. A strange thing to note is that I put this song up there with "Suus" and "Maybe", both songs themselves with strong jazz roots in one way or another. "Suus" in essence being an experimental jazz piece, and "Maybe" performed with Valentina's unshakably strong jazz sensibilities.

Well done Portugal. A unique, lovely, timeless song. It doesn't have a hole in hell at ESC, but maybe some countries could learn from that attitude. 8 points for now. Might grow into even more.

Also, delighted for you RW. Enjoy it.

I'm just over the moon we got to send this. Called dozen of times and was actually hopping it would get 12 points in televote, since no other song came even close on youtube and social media buzz.

Love everything about this and Salvador is such a special guy. I'm just lost for words about how much this song touches me. Thank you juri!

also i am super happy for everyone in this thread being all gooey about this choice because awwww

I have to admit, I severely misjudged this song. Upon first listen I found it rather dry, and lacked good backup, yet I listened again and somehow I was captivated. His voice is perfectly pure and heartwarming, and the piano places the focus on his voice without overshadowing it. I also loved how the violin was kept sparse, yet effective. This is the first song that I can truly see winning in May! Best of luck to Salvador, he will kill it! xheart

Reading the lyrics, I don't know how many of y'all have seen the movie her., but I got kind of a vibe of that scene where Samantha & Theodore are people watching and he starts talking about the couple they see and how Theodore thinks she's finally found someone who doesn't treat her like crap. It's one of my favorite scenes in that or any movie, and this song sort of feels like the story of that couple.

I can't relate to this.... But since it got such a positive reaction, I'll give it a chance in a few days. For the moment, I can't really see what makes people like it. I find it extremely old fashioned, boring and Salvadors voice and manners when singing don't appeal to me at all... sorry Portugal!

It's the classiest song chosen so far and completely incomparable with all the cheap knock off ballads we have so far.
Salvador shows a real emotion and his song really takes you places.
France has my 12, but Portugal deserves a 12 too. Beautiful, stunning and captivating xheart
