Re: PORTUGAL 2017

Salvador's sounds like something that would win back in the 1950s. No place for it in this decade xshrug

50's music sounds evergreen/vintage while the 3-4 songs selected so far that sound like they were in a drawer since the 90's sound dated.
There is a difference between vintage and dated.

The ratings were terrible. Around 600.000 viewers, 13% of share and half of what the most watched show of the night did. During the beginning of the show the ratings were better, but as the songs came and people realized that afterall nothing had changed from the previous FdC's, they went lower and lower.

Re: PORTUGAL 2017

Of course ratings got worse and worse. Bad tv presenters, bad songs, snooze fest all the way. Was this the idea of fun? I don't want RTP in any of my night out's.

I'm starting to like Salvador song a lot more and now I can actually picture it working with judges and even with teelevote with the right staging and camera work. He is VERY awkward and quirky and that can work. But I still can't forget Lisa. It would work very well on esc. She just needed to be more relaxed and free on stage. The dance break is amazing! I just to shake it baby! But she is out so: buh!

The songs are terrible, and RTP admitted that the composers didnt do the songs thinking about Eurovision whatsoever. So I dont know why they hired them, as usual, terrible job RTP

I agree. Time and time again it's been proven that composing songs while using an ESC frame of mind is dangerous, wrong even, and constantly we're given examples of songs that aren't molded using the ESC how to make a song handbook, going to Eurovision and absolutely shining there. A song is a song. You can compose a strong song for the contest without even thinking about it, and it's often the best way to go about it.

Salvador's song for sure isn't made thinking of ESC, and that's precisely why it would stand out and feel so special there. Gosh I just love it so muchxcry1

For now it's the worst selection i've seen in years, "dated" is not enough to describe it.
I woke up 2 hours before it started and after it was over i was so depressed, sad and down i just went back to bed crying over a bowl of ice cream...xfacepalm

Re: PORTUGAL 2017

Such a disappointment. :( They don't need to write songs especially for Eurovision, just realize that we are in 2017 and propose ontemporary entries that can fits to a wider audience.

In Portugal there are tons of modern songs, with amazing arrangements, their music scene is something very different from what we've seen at FdC, but I don't need to tell you, our Portuguese friends already explained it hundreds of times.

The fact the worst song won the semifinal is discouraging. A creepy mess. The only one who caught my attention is Salvador. There's a big difference between outdated songs and evergreen songs. "Amar pelois dois" sounds like an evergreen. And looking at his other performances and interviews he is such a nice guy with a beautiful soul.

I honestly never dreamed to see something like that representing Portugal but if I must choose something from this selection, well, Sobral is the best choice. The jury should love him, the televote probably not but after "Suus" (and "1944" as well) everything can happen. Let's see if we'll get something good in the second semifinal.

Re: PORTUGAL 2017

Despite the bad ratings, Salvador Sobral's perfomance is currently the most watched video on Youtube here in Portugal and #festivaldacancao is still trending on Twitter (not for the best reasons, but helps building hype for the second semifinal).

Well, now about the show itself... RTP tried, and they did improve a lot, but the songs didn't help. Literally all the ballads ended up on the first semifinal, so I knew this was going to happen. The second semifinal will be much more diverse.

That is true, from what I remember semi-final 2 will have only one ballad. Let's see how it'll go. RTP did improve in terms of the staging and the visual graphics and those things, but the show itself was so incredibly boring. All of the entries were performed in the 1st hour and the 2nd hour was just recap after recap after recap tangled with medleys of songs from 40 and 50 years ago like they do literally every single year.

Re: PORTUGAL 2017

i mean i don't disagree that writing a song specifically for good eurovision results can go south pretty fast *side-eyes azerbaijan*, but there is a difference between "not being limited by an esc state of mind" and "we are not even interested in our own audience". i can't deny they put in a lot more effort this year, with staging, graphics and even the hosting (it used to be a lot worse!), but no effort can fix the matter of taste, and RTP's idea of good, public-engaging music continues to be terrible. the whole "the objective is to showcase portuguese music" is a red herring and an excuse.

with that said, salvador could easily qualify and get some points in an eurovision final lol. his mannerisms would never go unnoticed anywhere and his song should drop jury panties all around if they finally ripped the "don't give points to songs not in english" page from their book this year. unless semi 2 is a miracle, salvador is their best chance at a final this decade.

Re: PORTUGAL 2017

Something very interesting was revealed: Salvador Sobral will go to surgery tomorrow for a navel hernia that has been troubling him for some time now. That explains the large shirt and coat used during the semi-final performance.
He will be fully recovered to sing in the final on March 5th.

I just found this cover from Salvador. Very good and it shows a bit of his wonderful spirit.

I'll admit it's the most interesting entry of the 4 that got through but that really doesn't mean that much. Just hoping there's something better in the next semi

Re: PORTUGAL 2017

Salvador Sobral will undergo umbilical hernia surgery tomorrow; he was ill during the semi and that partly explains the clothes he wore last Sunday; his belly is swollen and he was trying to hide his condition; according to ESC Portugal he will be able to sing "Amar pelos dois" in the final of FdC. His condition also explains why he is so thin. Get well soon, Salvador. :)

P.S. "Amar pelos dois" has reached 130000 views on YT! xyes
