I understand that the idea that Portugal might finally win this year is quite charming but song-wise the hype seems undeserved. If this were truly the favorite song of the fans, they would have supported it more in recent weeks and months. Supporting a country just because it hasn't won yet means voting for the country instead of voting for the song, something normally criticized by the fans.

I think the vast majority don't care that it's from Portugal. You're making that up. If it wins, it'll be because think it was the best. I've loved it since I first heard it several months ago.

Of course, some people have supported the song all along but there hasn't been such a hype until a few days ago.

This! Didn't wanted Loreen to win back then just because Sweden wasn't doing well during mid 00's, I wanted Loreen to win beceause how freaking great and mindblowing Euphoria was. Now I want either one of the two mediteran countries to win becuase they got great songs and a mediteran hosting would make Eurovision as a competition to aim for a refreshing direction like how Sweden did in 2013. Even if the changes Sweden did for Eurovision was really unpopular for some, but Sweden finally did their impact on Eurovision and now it's mediterans turn to shine.

Of course, some people have supported the song all along but there hasn't been such a hype until a few days ago.

In my eyes, there were 2 factors for that hype to suddenly arise (none of them have to do with being Portugal).

1 - Salvador hasn't been able to attend 1st rehearsals. Being already a fan favourite (it's been top 5 in the bookies for quite sometime), that started to build antecipation and momentum. When all the staging presentations were already known, only one country had a suprise to bring to the table: Portugal and the heart and soul of the song.

2 - Before semifinals, there were some worries that this wouldn't work when it mattered the most. But it did. If you go to the official ESC facebook page, the number of likes/shares/comments on Portugal's video (during semi 1, when it aired) is mind boggling! No one came even close. Youtbe, itunes, chart trackers... All of that gave the impression that the song was very well received with televote and 1st time viewers. So the previous ideia that this would flop big time with the public went out the window.

This is basically my analysis.

I want Salvador to win, because I think the song is so beautiful and he really is a talented performer. During the first semi final when I watched his song with my folks, my dad said before he even heard the song that he didn´t like it (he doesn´t like ballads and slow songs), and when he started singing, we living room went completely silent. When he finished, my dad said "I´m voting for Portugal"! (And then I had to explain to him that he couldn't vote  )

I´ve liked this since I first heard it, and it has only grown on me more and more for each day. To me, this is the winner of this year, but I won´t be disappointed if he doesn´t win. xheart I am sure Italy, Bulgaria, Belgium or wherever we end up will do a great job hosting, but this song is my winner xheart

This explains the odds and why he has become a favorite to win. The general audience didn't know him before and it was indeed unknown if the would be popular or flop. For the fans themselves this shouldn't have made a difference because they've already been familiar with him. I think many got hyped by the idea that Portugal might actually win leading to more people rooting for Portugal now than before.

Well, that's only natural and unavoidable. Till this day, the main expectation was to qualify and to achieve a top10. A top 5, in our wildest dreams.
Of course, if betting odds puts us as a serious contender... people that root for the song get more hyped than before.
