Just looked up on the odds and Italy reign at the top ended as Portugal shortens to become bookies favorite to win

I'm trying to lower my expectations but it's being rather hard :( I don't want to have a huge disappointment in the end...

If Portugal doesn't win, I really hope that no one sees a historically good finish as a huge disappointment. You should all be very happy regardless, although it may take a few days to get over a potential loss.

Best of luck!

I understand that the idea that Portugal might finally win this year is quite charming but song-wise the hype seems undeserved. If this were truly the favorite song of the fans, they would have supported it more in recent weeks and months. Supporting a country just because it hasn't won yet means voting for the country instead of voting for the song, something normally criticized by the fans.

I can only speak for myself here, but the song being from Portugal didn't influence me at all. I wasn't even aware of Portugal's bad records, since I've watched the ESC only randomly in the past years.
I just fell in love with Salvador, his voice and the song first time I've heard and seen it. It's as simple as that.
Still you might be partially right, since it seems there are lots of people who didn't like it at all first and join the hype now.

Winning the ESC might be the hardest task in the whole world of entertainment. It's already very difficult to pick an artist and a song which are good enough to be considered anywhere near top 10. And finding an entry that can even have chances to win might occur maybe once in 10 or 20 years, when you are neither a Scandinavian country (especially Sweden, they automatically have that every year) or Russia (when they participate).
So I can fully understand the nervousness of the audience from Portugal (and also from Italy, but they had top results more often) about being so close to the "chance of a lifetime" of winning the ESC. When you are so close, you want that first place and all the glory that comes with it. And if it's a second place in the end, it will be a disappointment for many, even if they will find it hard to admit openly.
Anyway, there is one thing about this whole "Italy-Portugal-duel" that I like very much: Weeks ago all the circumstances let us assume that this upcoming May 13th would be one of the most boring ESC-final days of the decade. And now we have at least a little excitement back, even if it should turn out that Italy's landslide victory occurs as planned (which I believe will happen although I'm personally in favour of "Amar pelos dois").
So thanks to Portugal and Salvador Sobral for a lovely song, an amazing performance and for bringing back some excitement in 2017's ESC final. xrose

Don't know if this was already discussed here, the Sobral siblings have never thought of singing together "Amar pelos dois"?

Thank you, that is great! But I mean in ESC.

i'm sure they did, but the song doesn't allow a duet...the lyrics are about loneliness and wanting for your love to come back, wouldn't make sense to have her right there :p

Right, that's a good reason, anyway, even a duet is great for this special song :)

I see it exactly the same way as you do, but I can also understand, that many wish a Portuguese victory just because from the experience this chance will not come again soon. I would absolutely LOVE seeing Portugal winning, but I would have preferred it with a different song. It has grown on me a lot from the bottom 5 to my top 10 (where it is since a couple of weeks now), so I see the musical quality of it, but for me - in terms of song and especially performance (I still find Salvadors manners on stage quite annoying), Italy or also France would be the better winner. Nevertheless, if Salvador will make it tonight, I will be very sad for Italy but very happy for Portugal.

BTW: I'm thinking about getting a bottle of Champagne for tonight. Am I too optimistic?

No, champagne is always great, no matter who wins. xshrug

The song has also grown on me and it will be in my final top 10, where it has never been before. If it wins, I will be happy for Portugal. Their win would probably be even more special for them than Austria winning in 2014 was for us, since it would be their first. Nevertheless, I think it would be best for the contest to return to winners that can be played on the radio all over Europe, comparable to Euphoria.
