Last night was a special night. For the first time in years I've been in agreement with my people and satisfied with the choice of PORTUGAL'S CHOICE for our representative @ ESC this year.
From the start, since tuesday, I did show my preferences on this thread. Leonor had it for me since then. Right away. Yola and Simone were two huge shadows that threatened the chances of my "newborn into the scene" favorite. But that soon was dismissed last night. I was so, SO happy when they announced Leonor as the winner last night. Honestly when they announced the final 3 I COULDN'T have it seen it going any other way. Teresa was a threat, yes, but how many times did she get repetitive in her lyrics?
I do enjoy her song, but given the last 3....if Leonor wasn't the obvious choice, then nothing else was.
But step by step then.
Early into the night I had this feeling that's been running on all week-long. "It's gonna be between Yola and Simone".
Then song Nr. 1 comes. José Freitas, delivers it as flawlessly as he did during the first semi. Did I think that our hopes could rely there? No. Did I think if that one song got selected would make me "proud" of having my country represented in such way? Yes. José's still was a sort of outdates blues-styled song but you can't blame the guy technically. He did his job. I still think he has a bit of kaorake-singer manners though. There was clearly no reason to exaggerate in certain high notes as he did, but I do understand him...the competition was hard. Why not? I think he delivered a solid performance in the end, as he kept on promising since the beginning of this week. He was my number 3/4 choice for the final 4. Really between him and Teresa. I would have been happy either way. But I did NOT predict either.
Since, who's follow FdC since the beginning of this week, come on. It was a clear titans duel between Yola and Simone, right?
But off we went to the second performance of the night. And Yola delivered her powerful voice as flawlessly as during tuesday's evening. I thought to myself then "ok, she might have this on the bag. Let's just see how Simone does. She clearly had the audience very moved emotionally at least".
Then came Leonor. She was perfect. I think even better than on Tuesday. I think Miguel Gameiro's composition is flawless and, really, Leonor, couldn't have delivered it any better. She's just a bright young talent that started delivering recently. She's only 20. I thought to myself that if she was like 15 years older and had had a career full of experience and a more matured voiced, her song song would become a serious contender at Vienna. But no. That's the beauty of Leonor. She's youth at her prime. She screams her lungs out and delivers her soul, both vocally and theatrically to what she knows best herself to be nowadays. Only 20 years after her birth. When I watched her performance I needly shed a tear of pride that there's hope for Portugal in pop music talent after all. But I muss confess, I did not expect her to be on the way she did end up getting at the end of the night.
So then came Simone. She kinda blew us away on Thursday. I must confess, I'm not a fan of Simone and I KNEW that the lyrics and mood of her song wouldn't get us far at ESC this year. But I must say, I really thought it was REALLY between her and Yola for this year. But my oh my. Was I surprised. Indeed I was. Simone gave us all a poor performance last night. Compared to Tuesday in the very least, where she managed to move the hearts of many non-Portuguese with her flawless interpretation. But last night...last night she was all smiles from the start. I thought to myself as I watched her performance "why so unprofessional Simone? You were highly revered throughout the globe after your Thursday performance, but why such poor delivery tonight when it REALLY matters? I do want you to win over Yola with your theatrics." But that was not to happen. Simone threw herself under the bus with the performance of last night. Simone is highly revered in my country still, so I thought to myself: "ok, crappy deliverance...but it's you, Yola and a wild card. Which I hope to be my Leonor."
5th song came and Teresa was soon easily catchy around the household. Her song, if chosen over Leonor in the end...I wouldn't have cared so much. It was lyrically very precise. "Celebrate the time we'll be soon living". A "fado in Vienna", why not?
But as catchy as she was during her performance, I did notice to those around myself...."ok, her chorus is really really catchy, but do notice one thing. It's not a chorus at all. She says it throughout the entire song: "Canto em Lisboa, Canto em Viena" - at leat 15 times. My peers agreed with me about the repetitiveness and that this was a weak point of the song. But we never did question Teresa's wonderful, powerful vocal tone and solid stage presence. That was granted from the start.
Lastly came Gonçalo...mind you all, I must say Gonçalo ruined the FdC experience for me and I'm sure for many other Portuguese. A guy that was NEVER voted by the Portuguese public, he was saved TWICE by the jury. I've been listening to knocked-out Filipa Baptista's song ever since Tuesday and thought to myself "wow, the live momentum for this song sure did suck, since it was the only electronica song being performed by a pop-rock band directed by this biased Spaniard...but still, how many light years away of a better performance was that compared to Gonçalo?". Filipa was really robbed a spot on this final comparatively. I'm sorry she didn't get the chance to move forward now ("ok, Madureira can get quite shallow on his lyrics subject and Filipa wasn't as explosive as she should have been...but come on. Gonçalo gets to the final and THIS doesn't? Total BS.")
After the 6 songs were performed and so was the medley I kept it certain to myself "Yola, Simone and (let's pray) Leonor". I think whoever watched the first two semis could have only have thought that.
But then came the final 3 results. When Leonor was announced first, I bumped my fist up in the air in a celebrating attitude, thinking to myself "well done bright talented girl, you deserve 3rd at least". But NEVER did I think that it would become more than that. So I obviously expected for the announcement of Yola and Simone afterwards. But...
Teresa get's mentioned instead! I thought to myself "the hell, they're killing a giant candidate already! But Teresa does deserve it. She was 2nd in 2007 and damn, did she mature over the years. At 35 years of age she has achieved a wonderful singing voice stage. The song is repetitive, but ok...I do like underdogs, well done therefore Teresa!".
After that I thought the obvious. That Yola had been once again flawless and that Simone got a bit carried away with the early compliments (when I read those "might pull a German thing if I win" comments the day before, I became kinda discouraged about her seriousness towards the final performance). But no, the absolute shocking moment of the night was that. Yola out, Simone out. Jury saves Gonçalo for the 2nd time. WTF! Exciting to follow but...to which point was that fair?
Fine, Simone screwed up her delivery. But Yola didn't. And I'm not even a fan of her style. But one has to recognize merit always. And Yola had it. Nobody knows about her, so when I heard Leonor ("The Voice participant/finalist") and Teresa (former 2nd place at FdC in 2007) I thought that jury would give Yola her mighty performance a break. But no. Again this Gonçalo joke was saved for a 2nd time. It was surely the surprising moment of the night all around Portugal. Ok, that he was singing a Cid song (that will always remembered as one of the jolliest performers of Portugal with his 1983 entry) but such a crappy wannabe imitation he was. The lyrics do sound retarded in Portuguese and he sounded like an average late 90's/mid 00's Danish gay-friendly act that gets thrashed during the semis, IMO.
So I must say, I really felt sorry for Yola while never being a fan. Absolute injustice. Even José deserved that place better than Gonçalo if we forgot about the titans that were Simone and Yola.
But then it came down to the final 3...and I got thinking to myself: "Ok, why shouldn't this be Leonor's now? I can see Teresa being her main adversary now. Her song appeals a lot in a traditional way to the Portuguese folk. "Fado", clever lyrics, catchy." I concluded that Leonor might lose to Teresa out of tradition but it would still be okay if so. After all, since Tuesday her presence in the top 3 would have already been a victory to me.
Once the songs were performed again, I had no doubt though. Leonor was a 10/12 (like I voted around here) with her performance yet again. The lyrics are typically Portuguese yet not whiny or gloomy at all. Miguel Gameiro always knew how to write decent lyrics and delivered once again. It's not without reason that he's a top-selling composer around here, be it with his band or as a solo act. Then, the live band does suit Leonor's performance greatly. The drumming design is particularly delightfully fitting pop and whether that guy or a substitute, they must be there on stage with Leonor in May if they want to have some presence at all. It's a really well composed pop-rock tune in the end, and while I feel that (despite) Leonor gives her 100% vocally, she still is so so young and if she had 15 years more, she'd blew Europe away. But she's just a kickstarter. I give her a break. Will you Europe, too?
Because that's really the only thing that's flawing in her performance. The rest is all there. She has a clear top 10 visual considering the competition coming from elsewhere this year. I REALLY thought we'd be trying to shoulder Serbia by picking Yola instead. But good, great, that we went for something different. Very well spotted and chosen.
There are passages during Leonor's song (mostly during pre-chorus breaks) that I believe that could be filled with great stage effects and theatrics if the crew responsible is really up to it. She has it all to make it to the final at least, and I wouldn't be surprised with a top 10 finish, I think that she and mainly Portugal deserve it after such a long struggle to please Europe. Leonor is (obviously) one of the few pretty girls this year and I hope that Portugal is also recognized for that (aside clear talent) at last after sending out women that made me and other Portuguese men feel sadly unrepresented when it comes to the beauty of our local women. I just hope for a slight "Ukraine 2014-alike" revamp to the stage presentation and a little more concentrated effort from Leonor in May and we might just have some chance. Either way, I'm really proud of this girl. I haven't seen a choice from my country as good as her since probably Flor-de-Lis. Or even Lúcia Moniz. This could be our year given the subpar choices through that Europe of ours...
But I'm keeping it realistic. As much as this pleases me as a lifelong Portuguese Eurovision fan, I do keep in mind the Portuguese perspective. It's not all that extravagant jazz that Europe demands every single year. It doesn't stand out in an inovative way, correct. Yet, could we give simplicity a chance? After all these bogus years. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for that, certainly. She is a bit like a miniature Emilie to me, except, there's no pre-fabricated gimmick there. This is pure talent. I hope Europe recognizes it.
As I said already, I was already the happiest I ever was in recent years that Leonor will represent us. Teresa did get repetitive to heaven's high and Gonçalo was the most unfair wild card of all times in recent FdC's edition. I absolutely had no idea Cid had that influence over the other juries.
I wish the best luck to my Leonor from now on, she's obviously on my top 5 for this year.
Alongside, namely, Lithuania, Switzerland and Czech Republic for now. I know that my ESC taste is often unpopular so I'm hoping for a twice-in-a-row surprise with Leonor in May. Switzerland matches more my traditional ESC entries preferences, while Lithuania could have me sending 12 points out for hours long if their song was indeed final performed "Tiktai tu" instead of fabricated tale "This Time". Czech Republic is yet to reveal, that's right, but as soon as I heard Marta Jandová is representing the country in this return...it became a clear top 5 competitor to me. That girl is so great, kickass vocal range, you'll see Europe. I've been a long time fan since her German-based band "Die Happy" days and I was surprised that she took this chance at her career (about the same situation with Unheilig for Germany last year, except they were clearly exploding for their massive mainstream attention, while Marta and her band are sort of underdogs within the German music scene - if you do not know her work, expect something along the lines of Emma Morrone last year. Girl with an attitude for sure and I wish her the very best).
