Just finished watching this film called Mandy directed by Panos Cosmatos. Described as a psychedelic action horror film. I found it absolutely immense. I've never watched anything quite like it before. I don't even know what I just watched actually, but I knew from the moment I heard my favourite prog rock song Starless by King Crimson play during the opening titles that this was going to be next level. Andrea Riseborough is mesmerizing as Mandy, and Nicolas Cage is Nicolas Cage as Red Miller. He did his thing and it worked so well. Everything is washed over in an almost forever present neon red hue, which was gorgeous, giving the film a haunting, intangible beauty. The world built here is stunning and it's just a shame it's a single movie and two hours spent in it.

Mandy is a revenge tale, I guess you could say to put it most simply. It's got a slow but fascinating start. I was worried actually that it was taking so long to properly get going that it wouldn't be able to fit in everything it needed to do, but it managed just fine. The movie was so perfectly cast, and the director was a genius with the lighting and camera work. In a film with spiky demons riding motorcycles, it's actually the humans that were most twisted, with such foreboding presences. The film has so many startling and cool moments. Also the soundtrack is fantastic. One of the last works from the late Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. If you want something crazy and totally unique to watch, I don't think I can suggest better. Mandy is super trippy and beautiful.

Wow … just looking at the poster made me want to see the movie! And after reading your critics, even more (and not just because of Starless :mrgreen:). The trailer is amazing, you instantly can tell the great visual work and the camera work. It's on my "must-see"-list now. Thank you!

"The Grand Budapest Hotel" meets Quentin Tarantino. I thought of American Beauty too - each beautiful image has its ugly opposite side. With a better drama.

Whole new batch I've watched. A couple are slightly older, but it's the first time i've watched them.

Being Charlie
++++-

I enjoyed this film, I know people quite close to me who have struggled with drug abuse
and it is easy to see where all his struggles and problems evolved from. I think because of
how I can relate to the core issue of it, is why I've marked it so high.

Daddys Home 2
++---

It's your average christmas theme comedy movie. Not much to say, I don't think it is quite
as good as the first but I thought it was ok.

Life of the party
+++--

Melissa McCarthy never fails. A quality comedy, and I love how she protrays her characters
I don't think it's her best movie made, but it's still fairly great. One scene in particular I had
to pause because of how much I was laughing.

The Hate U Give
+++++

Absolutely sensational movie, 100% worth a watch. It's so well produced and I personally
found it quite enlightening as to how much the black community in America struggle
against the system. Amandla Stenberg is perfect for the lead, she's an amazing actress
and has the right amount of 'innocence' for the desire effect of the movie.

The perks of being a wallflower
+++++

This ofc has been out a while, but I never got round to watching it. I saw it on tv, and thought
it was amazing. So much so I watched it again not long after. The scene where he calls his
sister really sent shivers down my spine.

Venom
++++-

I enjoyed this anti-hero movie, I don't really pay attention to the Marvel type movies (which
this is apparently linked to). It was a lot of fun to watch and quite amusing in parts, Tom
Hardy was perfect for this role.

Crazy Rich Asians
+++++

Already hyping the fact there will be a 2nd and 3rd movie of this. Loved it, a full asian cast
movie as well. It really makes me want to go Singapore now. The drama and extravagance
of it all. Families, you can't pick them.

The Duff
+----

Not that I thought this was bad, just the rest were so strong, for the score. It has a 100%
predictable plot line but what do you expect from these types of films? I enjoyed it still.

Jurrasic World: Fallen Kingdom
+++++

Yaaas. I've loved this franchise my entire life, Amazing movie. Only a small part is actually
set on the island itself, most of it is somewhere else. One part where a dinosaur is at docks
roaring as the volcano plume falls behind up to it is quite sad to watch, it's such a great
movie and with it's epic ending, it leaves it all open for so many more endless possibilities.

Night School
++---

Just your average comedy, once again. I enjoyed it and found some parts funny, but
not the best comedy of this type out there.

It was one of the saddest movies I think I've ever seen, and Glenn Close is even better than the hype.

The Miniaturist

I've been intrigued to read the book for years, but just never got around to it. When I found out that it had been made into a two-parter mini-series, I had to check it out. It was very enjoyable. Loved the mysterious aspect of the miniatures.

I have watched the three LOTR movies in the last three nights in a row for the first time. The last movie which is literally 4 and half hours took so many things away from me. I don't think I'll be able to watch movies for a while.

Actually, I haven't watched this movie yet, but in the light of the discussion taking place in the Romania-thread, I can't wait to see it. I wonder if this movie would change peoples mind about the "not homophobic"-attitude of fundamental christian "opinions" on homosexuality..... :mrgreen:

The following sort of contains a spoiler (no specific events are talked about but rather the overall tone of the movie); you have been warned.

Velvet Buzzsaw Just watched this one and am a bit confused. Did I like it? Did it leave me cold? I don't know. Maybe a bit of both. I wanted to love it and at times I did. A horror film set in an art gallery is a cool idea. It was slow though and clunky at times. There were some very clever sections but the movie was quite superficial. Perhaps that was the point. It's a satirical look at the snooty world of art, it's icy dealers and the critics. Some cool moments for sure but I didn't really find myself caring about the cast of characters which made the clever, yet forseeable set pieces not as powerful as they could have been. The premise was unique but it was also predictable. Worth seeing though I guess for the visuals alone. I don't regret watching it.

Hush I thought this was really good. It's a horror movie with a very standard premise, except for the fact the protagonist is deaf and unable to speak. She's in the woods alone, trapped in her house with a serial killer outside. The film was incredibly tense from the get go, and that's with bearing in mind that I'm kind of immune to these kinds of movies at this point. This one actually made me want to pause it at a few moments as the tension was just so unbearable. It left me with many "what would you do?" moments.

Misery Seen this multiple times already but noticed it was on Netflix so I just couldn't resist. "Paul, my little ceramic penguin in the study always faces due south"😱

Also, I watched Mandy again for the second time the other night. I couldn't stop thinking about it since my first time experiencing it's beauty. It really is something. Definitely one of my favourite films ever, sitting besides Valerie and Her Week of Wonders and Inland Empire. It's aesthetic is everything.

7-the-lords-of-salem.jpg

Lords of Salem This Rob Zombie movie was sickening. I absolutely loved it. I guess the best way of describing it would be to take the classic Italian supernatural horror movie Suspiria and then mix in some WTF David Lynch moments, but ramp up the levels of unease to the absolute max. I was shocked, revolted and amazed. At times there was this grandeur to all the madness which made the grisly moments worth suffering through. So many surreal scenes. It was almost too much to take in at times. I think I experienced a sensory overload at one point. I watched the film a few days ago but I just haven't been able to stop thinking about it. It was very much a visceral experience.

A general gist: A seemingly happy-go-lucky dreadlocked disc jockey by the name of Heidi (played by Rob Zombie's wife, Sheri Moon Zombie) receives at her radio station, addressed to her name, a mysterious wooden box containing a vinyl record by an untraceable band called The Lords. When played, the sinister, ugly drone of the music gives Heidi a terrible vision of the salem witch trials. To say anymore would spoil it but it's one heck of a trip she goes on. You feel for her character. She's exactly the kind of person I'd want to be friends with and that made it all the more powerful viewing. The casting was fabulous. I absolutely adored the campy Patricia Quinn of The Rocky Horror Picture Show fame in the role of palm reader Meghan. The movie also featured a beyond awesome soundtrack, with The Velvet Underground & Nico's Venus In Furs and All Tomorrow's Parties both used to stunning effect.

I don't know what kind of person I'd recommend this movie to. It was fascinating but also very difficult. It's got me interested in watching some more Rob Zombie movies though. I used to like his music when I was a child, but never dug into any of his films (just as well as they would have been too much for me at that age). I can see why his stuff polarizes. I watched his The Devil's Rejects and it was probably the most uncomfortable viewing I've ever experienced. Lords of Salem was a different kind of beast though. It was bizarre and fabulous.

Today I felt nostalgic and I decided to watch again 'Twilight'. I used to love the saga, I've read all the books twice, I've watched all the films, etc. However, this time I couldn't finish watching it :lol: suddenly it's become too cheesy for me! It makes me feel uncomfortable xrollinglol

- I'm a murderer
- I don't mind
- I've killed people before
- I don't mind (applause for the girl not minding her crush is a murderer)
- I want your blood. I don't know if I can control myself
- I know you can
- And this is how the lion fell in love with the sheep

xpuke I had enough, thank you

At the same time, I think it's a shame because I really used to enjoy it very much. Perhaps I'll like it again within some time, so I won't throw the DVD away XD

:it: Gran bollito (1979) 8/10 A true-crime thriller with some gentle touches of dark comedy. Shelley Winters - in one of her rare leading roles - plays a seemingly average Italian lady, who is secretly a serial killer, decapitating her victims with a meat cleaver and producing homemade soap made out of their remains. Winters is absolutely excellent as she always was in such psychotic roles, but she is surrounded by equally good actors playing no less bizarre characters, including several male actors playing female parts. Highly recommendable, unjustly forgotten film.

:us: The Impossible Years (1968) 4/10 That, sadly, can't be said about this rather average comedy about an uptight psychiatrist, dealing with his teenage daughter's slutty behavior. The script was originally written with Peter Sellers in mind, but the lead was eventually played by David Niven, who's alright in its talky parts (the film is based on stage play and it shows), but seems a bit out of his comfort zone in many slapstick-comedy situations which were clearly tailor-made for Sellers.
