Re: Japan | 日本 | WV65 | Takeshi Abo - Believe Me

So happy that this piece won your NF. You may have been surprised but I wasn't at all. From experience i've learned that many players here really appreciate touching and sincere piano pieces. My debut was a melancholic piano song as well but with vocals, and I was shocked and touched to find just how many people were moved by it. "Believe Me" feels a very brave first entry still. I hope this does well for you. Fingers crossed for the finalxcrossed and I also really enjoyed reading your super long and detailed greenroom postxheat I've never experienced a visual novel before (know of them) but i'm getting my Japan fix at the moment with the new Guilty Gear videogamexheart

I'm not keen on this kind of song, which is too "quiet" for me, even though this can be considered as a "masterpiece" for some people here.
To me, this could do very well, as I don't think the SF, in which you are allocated, is strong.

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV65 | Takeshi Abo - Believe Me

So close, and yet so far! 9th in main voting and 3rd in REJU votes. I'd have loved to squeeze through to the final, but it's still an honour to get high points from so many people. I'll probably end up finding out I ruined my own chances by giving my :12: to the country just above me or something  A huge thanks to everyone that voted for me - I'll do some callouts when the final results are released, but even just looking through the SF3 thread I can see a nice spread of voters.

I'm going internal for next edition, and I'm really quite excited to see the reactions to what I'm sending. Artist info will come at some point over the next few days, but for now, here's a hint for my entry:

To anyone in Pot F: I think I can say goodbye to your votes for one edition, after loving your support this time around. My apologies. Pots A, B, and C? Look forward to the reveal!

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV66: ???

Another couple of hints!

#2: I'm pulling out the big guns here. Expect one of Japan's most successful artists!

#3: The artist's parents run a Chinese restaurant.

One last hint before I head off to sleep for the night~

#4: The artist for this edition is a solo act, but is better known for being a member of a hugely popular girlband or boyband.

Re: Japan | 日本 | WV66: Masaki Aiba

WV66 Artist: Masaki Aiba

sW3puRB.jpg

For WV66, Japan is proud to be represented by 33 year old pop superstar Masaki Aiba! Despite being a household name in Japan, Aiba is best known as a member of the boy band Arashi, which saw him - and the band's other four members - shoot to fame around the turn of the millennium. To know Aiba, you need to know Arashi - so, if you're interested, here's a little info!

In 1999, a young Masaki Aiba was scouted by talent agency 'Johnny's' as part of their new boy band project Arashi (meaning 'Storm'). After bursting into Japan's music scene with the popular self-titled single Arashi, the band enjoyed great success for a few years until running into a gradual decline around 2003. For a while, the band's popularity continued to wane.

In 2005, however, Arashi secured a deal with the producers of a new television drama Hana Yori Dango: the band's new single Wish would be used as the show's theme song, and band member Jun Matsumoto would play the role of the main love interest. The series proved to be a smash hit, and its popularity propelled Arashi back to the top of the charts. Capitalising on their momentum, Arashi found continued success - and this time, it stuck. Since the drama's 2005 release, the band has released ten albums and thirty-five singles - every one of which went straight to #1 on the national charts - and become one of the country's most famous acts, both at home and internationally.

Arashi's popularity turned them into a multimedia sensation and national icon: Japan's most popular boy band, the five have promoted the country in official Japanese tourism campaigns, and can be likened to girl group AKB48 in terms of popularity. Over time, the band has to date produced no less than twelve separate long-running variety and game shows on TV on top of countless specials, hosted a wide range of events and broadcasts, and spawned a successful acting career for each of its five members.

This ubiquity in Japanese media has elevated the band's status even further - and now, almost seventeen years after their formation, the band shows no signs of losing steam. Gaining tickets to an Arashi concert remains infamously difficult: despite every tour passing through stadium after stadium (including full weeks of sold-out nights at the famous Tokyo Dome, with a capacity of 55,000), tickets are so sought-after that only official fanclub members can purchase them - if they get lucky in the ticketing ballot, which most don't. There's no shortage of fans!

Now, for a little more on our WorldVision star: Aiba! I've talked a lot about Arashi here, and to be completely honest, I'd actually intended at first to send the band as a whole. They've got some fantastic songs and quite a good variety of styles, so there was plenty to choose from, and there's one in particular that I love. Looking through their songs, though, I found myself unable to go past one of Aiba's solo performances, which puts a huge smile on my face however many times I watch it. As the quirky dork of the group, most of Aiba's solos are pure cheese: kitschy funk, silly disco and more. I don't want to spoil too much, but I think the song I'm sending here is pure Aiba - hopefully you'll enjoy it. Look forward to the reveal!

Time for a little fun: I've decided to subtitle my next entry! I love the lyrics, and as a translator-in-training I could always use some more practice, so look forward to some subtitled Aiba action~

I've actually considered anime translation a few times, but pretty much every show that airs now gets translated within a couple of days (with the only exceptions being flash-animated three-minute shorts about regional mascots and the like. Reeaaaal bottom-of-the-barrel stuff). Also, trying to subtitle an airing show is a huge time sink, which might not be great for me since my next university semester's coming up. I am looking for some kind of big project, though - I've got about a week left to decide on a long translation to do for my university course. Was hoping to do this manga, but it's not quite long enough. Do recommend me any anime-related things that might work, though - I'll probably go for something I find myself (currently considering manga, voice actor radio shows, drama CDs etc), but there's a slight chance I might like your recommendation enough

woah!
it seems that you have a good plan as translator :D
I don't have any recommendation for you at this moment as you already have your stuff waiting out there .
Anyway, I have question, where do you find Japanese show video? I always watch this particular show, but it's not always aired frequently. The show is called "sekai no kowai yoru", a show where all the panel judges watch scary video from all over the world and only aired in the hottest night during Summer.
There are several videos from this show in YT (without translation, bless) but not the updated one :(

Hmm... I haven't heard of it before, to be honest. Just did a few quick searches then and I could only find the old YouTube videos myself. I can find just about any anime series easily, since there are large communities for them, but other Japanese stuff is... not often easy to find.

Another huge thanks to all who voted for me in the semis! Lost out to a tiebreaker in the main votes and was one spot off in REJU - so close, and yet so far. Still, lovely to have the support! xheart

Subtitles are done, and the entry is uploading! Between translating the song, timing/typesetting/muxing the subtitles, re-encoding the video and uploading it, I... think I've spent a little too long on this. Hopefully it can stay up on YouTube without the Copyright Monster finding it; if not, though, I guess I can just upload it somewhere else. Either way, I'm happy with how it turned out, so look forward to it!

Hopefully it stays on youtube but if you run into trouble then Vimeo is a great solution. I was having youtube troubles with my NF recap videos so I went to Vimeo and they have not taken any down yet.

I'm curious to hear your next song. On paper this chap perhaps doesn't sound like my kind of thing but i'll certainly be keeping an open mind. Having said that though, "kitschy funk, silly disco" could be something for mexheat One thing I do love is your passion here. You're putting a crazy amount of love into this game and that's awesomexheart I enjoy reading your posts. Hope this edition goes better for you, although certainly you had a debut to be proud of. SO CLOSE darn it!:(
