Italy was never in trouble. We still have enough audience 40+ years and believe me, they‘ll love a classic Italian ballad!

I think Italy may be in trouble this year. People are saying this is a top 10 but the year is too strong to assume this will actually happen. While Mengoni is a great singer, he becomes a bit shouty towards the end of the song, and not in the best way.
Juries will appreciate this one, but I don’t think it will get much more than 100 points. Televote is a mystery, but we had many ballads last year and most of them ended up performing quite badly televoting-wise. For me this is a mid-table result. No way he will be 7th as in 2013.

Any opinions?
I don't know what ranking Marco will reach but all the calculations and the differences you made have little bases.
Last year was full of ballads and all failed, except Italy and Netherlands.
The year before was full all the diva pop songs mostly loved by the ESC bubble failed, remember Malta Cyprus Serbia Azerbaijan Israel Moldova.
According to all these observations none of the ballads or diva pop songs are going to win this year due to what happened in the last two years? And what about Spain having a similar style as France 2022 which failed miserably?
No I don't think so. Each year is on its own.
The only observation I can make is that this year there are so many songs so-called "" an event '', if they all pass through the semis. And some of them will fail for sure opening possibilities for "non event" ones.

i sadly have to agree with those who expect italy not being in the top10 this year. i quite enjoy the song, i really liked l'essenziale aswell but all in all it seems quite uneventful to grab votes this year. i personally have it in my top10 but i kind of wish he went with something more daring this time, he has some great uptempo songs. and i really hope they bring at least some (apropriate) staging this year, that was very dull last time (as nice as he is to look at)

Not everything can be uptempo... An "all uptempo" Eurovision will be as awful as an "all ballad" Eurovision.

We also hope he will make something to push the song a bit. A simple but effective staging, there are so many over the moon stagings this year.
But you guys have to clear a bit your ideas about being DULL or NON EVENT
Lasts year Italy s staging was DULL but most Europeans didn't think it was. They got a 6th place, higher than Norway's SUPER FUN song. You may say overrated but by whom? Let say the Juries tend to overrate but the public? So being DULL and NON EVENT is a disadvantage? I don't think so. It depends always by the quality of the "dull" or "fun" proposals.
Last year was an example, some dull proposals finished top 10 and some fun ones failed or even didn't qualify

nobody said that. i just wish that HIS song might show a different side of his catalogue (which exists...) and i think as a song (no matter uptempo or ballad) it's just not that special as i hoped it would be

ok let me try to find a more appropriate word than dull... i think l'essenziale was staged very uncreatively, i don't think there needs to be a "show" with songs like this AT ALL, but i think u can do a lot just with lightning ect and there basically was not much there, when he went out in the crowd it got a little more lively, but i think u can present the song in a much more interesting way

I understand what you mean.
10 years have passed, the stages and the staging concept have evolved.
Also Marco has grown as an artist.
But even with that non staging 10 years ago he got a 7th place. This is the point that I don't understand.
You claimed that Brividi and L'essenziale had dull or minimal stagings but they got 6th and 7th At least with a better staging they would have got 5th and 6th place not more but is that a big difference?

Um yes that Kind of is the point. L'essenziale still was my numer 3 or 4 that year, so no shade there, i just think it could have been done so much more effectful. And i'm not talking about placing and scores just that it could have been... more.

A-lister's annual review:

As I already expressed in this thread this was a wasted opportunity for Italy (for a second year in a row) with stronger and more interesting entries in Sanremo but in the end we got the "standard ballad". Is it bad? No... it's just there I'm afraid. It's ok when you listen to it but then you forget it just after which isn't a good grade, although I actually prefer it over 2022 (but Marco's previous attempt was better) but not by much (not that it matters really). Oh well, at least the guy looks good so that might bring some votes, and the juries will probably support it as well.

I've always appreciated and respected your thoughts and considerations even disagreeing mostly.
We often have two completely different point of views because of our cultural and musical and age diversity. I'm 43.
I haven't read other your comments about the rest of this year's songs.
But I would be curious to know what you think about Loreen s song. It's not provocative.
Is Tattoos a step forward than Euphoria after 11 years? Has Tattoos the same style than Euphoria? Is Tattoos something new we've never heard from Sweden something original? And I'm not talking about staging because when I listen a song on spotify or Amazon there isn't any.

Thank you for appreciating, that's how it should be, we all come together on this forum for our love of the contest and we might not always agree on things but that's the purpose of a discussion forum, as long as we respect each other's differences. I can say the same back :)

I am not sure what I think about Loreen has any relevance to this though? I often see these kind of comments where somehow if you're from a country and talk about another's entry you need to "explain yourself", it's a bit strange never got that logic.

I didn't do a review of Sweden this year, also my short reviews aren't very in-depth and should be taken lightly. I could write much longer stuff but I know most people don't care to even read the short ones lol

I usually don't dig much into comparising past entries with current ones, but I get why it's sometimes good as a reference point but that's about it. In the end it doesn't matter from a contest's perspective. Does that makes sense?

As I wrote in my message to you I was not being provocative.
I was just curious to know your point of view about Tattoos since you usually make detailed analysis based also on what was offered by the national selection and what is "the trend" the country follows.
I asked to you not because you are Swedish but because often Sweden and Italy are "blamed" to be one a pop powerhouse and the other a ballad powerhouse.
Your analysis about Due Vite confirmed this fact. You called it "a standard Italian ballad",, something Italy often offers and compared it to other contemporary songs from Sanremo, which according to you should have deserved a win. You also did a short comparison between Due Vite and l'essenziale. So your analysis wasn't superficial at all.
On the other hand another powerhouse offers a standard Swedish pop, something Sweden often proposes. I was just curious to know what you think about it since you usually make detailed analysis and comparisons. Was there any other possibility worthy for Sweden to show another side, something we've never heard in the past 20 years ( rock, jazz, rap, R&B, ethnic, urban or a song in Swedish I don't know)?

Aha, I understand you better now, thank you for clarifying.

Well, not sure if this fits the Swedish thread better, but on average these days I do find Sanremo stronger than Melodifestivalen, contrary to Melodifestivalen (where Loreen was a standout compared to the rest), Marco was not a standout in Sanremo this year (at least not according to my taste) and frankly this has often been my relationship with Sanremo that there have been better options than the chosen one (which sometimes, like this year and I would argue also last year went to a safer entry).

As for Swedish selection, I have raised my criticism a million time in the Swedish threads over the years, Melodifestivalen was fun back in the day and had strong entries, sure a bit in its own bubble with Schlager and whatnot, but still... but lately it has become very boring with only 1-2 entries even worth mentioning. There is so much more Sweden has to offer, but Melodifestivalen does no reflect that. Sanremo has been developing in the right direction the past decade, but yeah also struggles a bit but not in the same way.
