The new ERT might be exceptionally accepted back to the European Broadcasting Union if the new national broadcaster forms in due time to catch up at least the crucial deadlines of the Eurovision Song Contest 2014

This! The goverment is planning to create a new public braoadcaster with less people, but as GRE says it depends on when this boadcaster will be formed.

The monitors turned black...

They say the new channel will open in 3 months. But even if we're in time and even if it's an EBU member, I seriously doubt we're going to Denmark next year. There's chaos here. Do you really think they will care about the ESC? xshrug

I think they can still participate. If ERT is just closed for some months then they'd return in time for ESC. And if it's a new state television channel I suppose the EBU would let them enter again immediately. Then again, even if so, we don't know if they'd actually want to take part thanks to monetary and internal problems.

BTW the way the Greek government did this.... with the announcement just some hours before... that's so creepy. As a journalist, I wonder how ERT workers feel right now that they've just lost their jobs in such miserable way.

People here need to be less egocentric with the greek participation.
As "alca" said, Greece have another big things to deal with and Eurovision isn't a too important topic to worry when in the streets are people in strike, violence and repression.

Being sad because Greece might not participate in the next ESC doesn't mean one's being "egocentric" and not aware of the massive challenges the country faces right now. They even go together, because they make Greece's dire situation even more evident in our eyes.

Well, I dunno what to say. Europe in general is in a state of crisis, people have been losing their jobs in different fields, now it happened to one of the more privileged ones (media).

It's always sad though when things just turns out this way... somehow Greece has hold onto ESC for the last years though (sort of miraculously one might say considering the state o the country). What about that channel that helped ERT hosting the Greek selection for 2013? Aren't they an EBU member?

Speaking purely from a Eurofan point of view, I don't really know much about what else there is concerning the temporary shutdown of ERT, I think it's really sad what's happening, but honestly given that the government is driven to this extreme, I'd almost welcome a Greek withdrawal from the contest. I know that in comparison to other forms of expenditure from the Greek government, the Eurovision is mere pennies, but the fact is that there are hospitals going without basic equipment like surgical gloves and schools going without heating and many other terrible things in Greece, and I think that if they axe the Eurovision for a few years if it means that some people get to keep their jobs, then I'm all for it. Rather than keep participation in the Eurovision than have some cleaners in ERT getting fired or something.

I think it's very stupid the way the government did it in such short notice.
Anyway why the hell is that European board of urology thing in ERT's site?

AFAIK, Koza Mostra's partecipation at this year's Eurovision was arranged by privately-owned MAD TV, that organized the national selection on behalf of EPT, then the record label paid all the EBU fees to partecipate in Malmo. EPT partecipated "for free" this year, as the entry it was privately-funded.

It's more or less what happens in Italy, as the record label pays the bills and Rai give them visibility.

Anyway, this is terrible news for democracy and for Greece. C'mon, it's where Democracy started! No words to what's happening there. Go protest, because tomorrow could be our turn in Italy. We're supporting you.

Mad tv is not a member of ebu,
and besides of this,
some months ago the president of Mad tv went to prison.

Like A-lister said,Greece did it in a miraculous way for 4 years in a row (2010-2011-2012-2013).
We should wait until December to see what is going to happen this year.

Today the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) expressed profound dismay on behalf of Europe’s entire public service media community at reports that ERT – a founding Member of the EBU in 1950 – has been shut down with immediate effect. Emergency powers granted to the Finance Minister and the competent Minister have been used to stop ERT’s transmissions, leaving Greek citizens wishing to watch ERT programmes in front of black screens.

In a letter sent today to the Greek Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, the President of the EBU, Jean Paul Philippot and the EBU Director General, Ingrid Deltenre urged Mr Samaras “to use all his powers to immediately reverse this decision”.

The existence of public service media and their independence from government lie at the heart of democratic societies, and therefore any far-reaching changes to the public media system should only be decided after an open and inclusive democratic debate in Parliament – and not through a simple agreement between two government ministers.

In the letter, the EBU stresses the importance of public service media as an essential pillar of democratic and pluralistic societies across Europe.

The EBU President and DG go on to highlight that “While we recognize the need to make budgetary savings, national broadcasters are more important than ever at times of national difficulty. This is not to say that ERT need be managed less efficiently than a private company. Naturally, all public funds must be spent with the greatest of care.”
