Didn't the Athens contest bring in a profit?

Most probably. But hosting Eurovision needs a previous investment anyway and that's what people see. Even if they're not right, I understand that people who are suffering all the cuts and the austerity may feel upset at some expenses.

Yes it did bring a profit, and the problem is basically what ParadiseES posted. People are very shortsighted....

Details of the profit from 2006: Eurovision ERT: '2006 contest profitable' - ESCToday

"To organise the Eurovision Song Contest, ERT paid EUR 5,534,000 from it's budget. The total income from the contest is currently set at EUR 7,280,000..........ERT concluded with a statement saying that the Greek tax payer didn't pay anything for the contest, as the revenue was higher than the costs."

Not to mention the money it brought into the city with sold out hotel booking and tourist spending.

In Sweden it was the contrary, ESC in Malmö was an economical loss (as I expected it to be - worst choice of city ever!).

Interesting to see those numbers though...

hmmm I read somewhere that Malmö that ESC injected about 80 millions euros to the city. That's muuuch more than the budget.

That's funny, because in my local paper it states that the municipality lost on hosting ESC

Well, I guess the municipality lost because it's not the municipality who gets all that money, but hotels, shops, pubs, restaurants, .... etc. you know. Maybe that's what they mean.

I dunno... maybe...

the problem is that it was so close to Copenhagen, that Denmark gained without actually paying anything for it... alot of people chose to stay at hotels there and stuff instead....

Oh well, back to Greece

Nerit will be on air around 25th of April.
They have an agreement with EBU that Nerit must broadcast Eurovision in 6,8,10 of May.
They are trying to be in the deadline, otherwise Greece will withdraw, and pay a fee.

The same paper that reported this, reports that everything is still going forward for Eurovision, and that the temporary broadcaster DT will show the NF most likely on 4 March. In the next few days the announcements are expected.

If they don't sand smth too quality to ESC, I'd like one year to have some laiko ballad, female preferable, like these ones:

I have an idea for next year's Greek NF. What do you think about an airport as the NF venue...? ;)

This news is still not officially announced/confirmed by NERIT/DT or MAD TV, but according to OGAE Greece, the deal with MAD to handle the NF again this year has been signed. It will have artists from Panik Records/Platinum Records again. The 4 rumored acts:

Kostas Martakis
Kristallia
Josephine
Freaky Fortune

The NF will take place March 4 or 5. The songs are already chosen, and the artists will film promotional videos for them in the next week. The songs will be presented to the public in a special show on DT, about 1 week before the NF.

It is worth noting that the band Freaky Fortune were on Cobalt Music, but I guess they are now on Panik/Platinum.

Here are sample music videos from each of the artists:

Kostas Martakis

Kristallia

Josephine

Freaky Fortune

My personal take: As far as the initial names go, Kostas Martakis seems like the favorite. I just hope they did not go out looking for a "Eurovision song" for him. That never turns out right...... Knowing his label, I bet his song is in English....another potential negative.

While the other artists on the list may seem underwhelming to some, I think we may be surprised. Freaky Fortune are going to cover the dance representation for sure. I suspect Kristallia will get some type of ballad. Josephine I am guessing some type of pop song. We will find out in 2 short weeks I guess...
