Wow, Germany sends avant-garde and out-of-the-box entry this year! Eartheater, Igorrr and Ulver who? LMAO

That's the only entry this year so far that I can only describe as nondescript and lame. Sorry Germany.

Setting unusual accents in time signatures doesn't necessarily mean "exciting", especially when you repeat it four times in a row during the chorus and then call it a day  Was just giving musical context why people get associations with Africa, since it seemed Jupiter was mocking a girl on twitter with background in music theory when she clearly got a point xshrug

There's a musical explanation this flamboyant picture sent by I bims made sense for a lot of people ;)

EDIT: Should probably add that African tribal music is not meant to be "avant-garde" or "out-of-the-box". As the name suggests, it's music made for everyone, so pretty accessible and easy on the ears. Please don't have these misconceptions just because it mentions "Africa"

Meh. That "girl on Twitter" = actually (probably) an older Lady on yt who also claimed several other things like Bodine & Ryk being bad singers who messed up half their notes or AOTR being the most structurally complex of the Songs in our NF (followed by "Forever strong", btw). I simply put don't believe that person studied music, period. That's where that mocking comment came from. (And from the fact she simply couldn't stand Ryk for being gay too).

As for your post explaining why you think the African music Inspiration is true - I appreciate the long explanation, but I find most of these comparisons rather superficial. Maybe it's because a lot of the music I encounter through dancing is Fusion stuff between all kinds of styles & backgrounds anyway. But AOTR doesn't register as anything but German Radio-Pop for me. I also don't think it's the best part of the song - it's the weakest for me, because it wastes the best thing in all of this, Isaaks voice. But I don't actually feel like arguing about this. And I doubt you think "african dancers" are a good idea for staging either, which is where I truly lost it ;)

Alright, I'd probably be in the few with a more positive verdict on the German entry.

Always on The Run isn't bad, at all. It's a standard pop song with good production. It has quite a catchy hook, and from what I've seen ISAAK is a competent vocalist. With the right staging, at least the juries would appreciate it. I like the song too, likely giving it :8: for now.

Unfortunately, this is Germany, and from what I've seen fans are HARD on them. It might partly be the way NDR works and Germany's position of being in the Big 5, but if something wasn't up to fans' expectations the support starts to fade away quickly. I can see other countries sending AOTR and receiving good verdicts, like Sweden, Switzerland, Poland, or any other country that is not Germany.

I mean, I won't defend her other points (although I think Bodine and Ryk had a weak day at the NF as well, based on other live performances they are capable of doing so much better), but even a broken clock is right twice a day ;-)

And of course it's superficial since the "African inspiration" can be applied to 2 (two!) bars in the whole song. And those two bars are repeated over and over and build the whole chorus. So when someone like Iker comes around and says he thinks the song is "nondescript and lame", I'm the last person to disagree , since of course it is exactly that. Our entry is one hell of a snoozer (no offence to those who like it, I heard there are some souls who do). All I did was try to give reason why these associations don't come out of nowhere.

I am no stage director, so no idea how I would stage it. When Waylon came around with Outlaw In Em back in 2018, his staging was also not what I had in mind. But I thought it was rad, so who knows xshrug

So Germany finally ended up in the low 20's in the odds. Not a good position for a pre-qualifier.

Isaak is right next to Denmark's Saba at the moment (27th and 28th) which makes sense. It's the same very Eurovision mid-tempo kind of songs. Isaak is a better singer than Saba, while Saba's song has a better melody.

I've just read this article in Eurovoix > https://eurovoix.com/2024/02/28/germany-isaak-staging/

So, they know their staging sucks. To improve it till Malmö, they give the keys to an English guy that, I quote, was "also in charge of the staging of British Eurovision participants like Electro Velvet, Joe & Jake, SuRie, James Newman, and Michael Rice".

Bottom five confirmed, congrats Germany :)

Just your typical low-standard piece of fan-journalism with its usual framing. Shipton was also in charge of Sam Ryder's staging. O wow, suddenly we're gonna come in second, look at that! How the turn tables

Sigh...

i dont wanna rub salt in the wounds but since there are almost only upbeat songs this year: ryk would have been even more a great choice for germany. such a shame :(

One of the most missed chances in the past German ESC-years. :(
