Even though I don't really like her, choosing Helene Fischer would be far less embarrassing than these Bavarians and could attract lots of viewers, so I wouldn't mind to see her in USFK.

I really would love to have something German again. Only because we were succesful with English songs (Satellite, Taken by a stranger, Standing still) that doesn't mean that we can't also be succesful with German songs. And the failure of Roger Cicero in 2007 with that weak song, is no reason to send only songs in English. With a really good song in native language you can also reach the Top10. I mean Hungary reached its best position since years with a Hungarian song. It got much more points than most of the songs they send in English in the past. And even if we would fail: In my opinion it's better to fail with a entry that really represents our country than being succesfull with english songs from abroad.

This is the right spirit and attitude!

And I totally agree with you, and fact of the matter is that while an unsuccessful attempt, Roger still did better than the two following German entries in English and the "international famous" Cascada did (also one has to note that Roger entered in a year without western-biased juries to help out).

And, for the last 15 years, 3/4 attempts with atleast partly German ended up in the top. 10, while just 4/11 attempts in English only ended up in the top. 10, so statistically speaking the (partly) German entries were more successful... and that were in years with 100% televoting where Germany generally struggled more than in the split jury years.

Not that I know anything really about the German music scene, but this Helene Fischer doesn't sound particularly German to me. It could be Sissel from Norway, Swedish Sonja Aldén or Celine Dion ororororor you name it. Good singer but the genre pretty boring. I think the line up of 2013 was exciting and both had a good variety and quality of artists. I'd say continue on that route and a winner will pop up sooner than you think.

I myself would also like a song in German, or maybe even dialect. It could be refreshing and new. I actually liked LaBrassBanda, even if I couldn't understand a single word besides the title. xD

That said, I would like to see some Plattdeutsch (Lower German), since NDR is the broadcaster it could be possible. Maybe something like this:

Though I stumbled across this as well and it just screamed 'Eurovision' to me  (btw best video ever!!)

Helene is VERY German, you have to check up more with her then... because nether Sissel, Sonja or Celine are doing German schlager

I think the German selection was, well, I dunno... xshrug

"VERY German" and "German schlager" doesn't really tell me anything. I searched and listen to her on Youtube and honestly must say my first association was Sissel Kyrkjebø. Now that is definitely not anything negative nor is Celine Dion. You can call it very German if you like, but particularly exciting it is not. :)

I think you've mostly heard her ballads then...

But yeah, as you say it's not really negative being compared to any of those either, as a matter of fact could be the juries' wet dream even

And Helene got the looks apartment going for her aswell, plus the ex-USSR connection...

She's basically not really popular among young Germans. Some die-hard fans here might disagree but if you would make a poll across all German schools and universities you would hardly find anyone listening to Helene Fischer. She is famous and does have a lot of money and therefore she wouldn't do it anyway.

Our best bet are either yet barely known German bands which sing in English or some unknown casting show winners. Whereas the German bands at least write their own songs in English which might make it a bit more interesting, the casting show winners could sing songs bought from the US/UK with a success guarantee.

Talk for yourself! When I went out clubbing in Berlin, they even played some of her songs! Hardly a place where lots of "grandmas" went... and for your info the world consists not just of young people, ageism is not cute...

And Helene Fischer is one of the most consistent commercially successful acts in Germany, most people could only just dream to sell as much albums she does and have Arena tours selling out like hers...

So much for "representing Germany"... I really hope that EBU will change the rules to prevent imported entries, it's destroying the purpose of the contest.... worst alternative EVER imo!

I already agreed that she is successful and makes a lot of money. That still doesn't change the fact that her music is unpopular in schools and universities. I don't deny that there are fans of her in schools/universities, but they are a minority. Go to any school or university in Germany and make a poll. I can guarantee you that the majority does not listen to her songs. It's just the reality.

As I want Eurovision to become an event especially for the young people I would prefer to not see any musicians like "Die Priester" in our national final. Catering to all ages and tastes just doesn't work.

In most countries it isn't about representing your country but winning. As long as you win the contest you will be everybody's darling and the press will love you. Shopping around in the US/UK has been successful so we should follow this strategy as it seems to work. Just look at Azerbaijan. Our broadcaster could certainly put some more cash on the table to contract famous US producers like RedOne.

I might have expressed it a bit ambiguous, but I meant that German bands who sing in English should write their own songs in contrast to casting show winners who get already written songs by songwriters.
