Re: FRANCE 2016

Louise Attaque just did their come back :

I don't think they could do eurovision but it's nice to see them again (Album to be released in early 2016)

Or at least Gaëtan Roussel could write an entry. He just wrote the new song of Louane. It's rather a flop but still... it could do a good entry !

Re: FRANCE 2016

I agree in part: French sounds GREAT with ballads, but they just don't work at ESC :p

Let's check this.

Victories for France:
Dors mon amour - ballad
Tom Pilibi - mid-tempo
Un première amour - ballad
Un jour, en enfant - ballad
L'oiseau et l'enfant - midtempo/power ballad

Top ten placings in the last 30 years
Et s'il fallait le faire - ballad
Il faut du temps - ballad
Je n'ai que mon âme - ballad
Sentiment songes - ballad
Il me donne rendez-vous - uptempo
Je suis un vrai garçon - midtempo (?)
Mama Corsica - midempo
Monté la rivière - midtempo
C'est le dernier qui a parlé - ballad
White and black blues - uptempo
J'ai volé la vie - ballad
Chanteur de charme - midtempo, but more towards a ballad
Femmes dans se rêves aussi - ballad/uptempo (only in the refrain)

And the true uptempo songs of the last 30 years?
Twin Twin - 26th
Amandine Bourgeois - 23th
Anggun - 22nd
Jessy Matador - 12th
L'amour à la française - 22nd
Ortal - 23rd

Of course there are some mid tempo songs that placed slightly better (like Monts et merveilles) but over all these results do not back up your argument, that french ballads don't work at Eurovision. I would rather say - IF something works for France, then it's ballads. Problem is, they need to find modern ballads.

Please, they just don't work at NOWADAYS Esc, or to say, they just don't work at Esc anymore, in the last 10/15 years (Patricia Kaas is an exception because she was already a very well known superstar) and it's not on me (I love French ballads), it's the taste of the new public. I wasn't talking about the past, I'm sorry this wasn't very clear.

(The fact that even uptempo songs don't work, well, who's to blame for that? France needs to solve THIS problem to find new appeal)

agreed. but uptempo songs did not work for France either - even worse as there is not even an exception as in the case of ballads.

But I think we agree on the point, that France has to reinvent itself to be successful again. Be it with an uptempo song or a modern form of ballad.

I think they should try something young and fresh. A french Lena, if you will. Or they could go for something in the style of Jesse Matador or (if they go for ballads) something very simple and authentic in the style of "boy with guitar"...

That's for sure

A strong personality has to do the trick. Be it Lena-like, be a boy with guitar. Personally I can't stand Jesse Matador, his song was awful... it's not a zumba course and we don't need any more carybbean beats :?

And of course, we got our best results in televote with that (8th) :? I remember that Bruno Berberes, our head of delegation at that time, said in an interview that they chose Jessy because the contest was held in Norway, so Norwegians are all white, they're cold and boring and don't have that many occasions to party = so choosing a West Indies-sounding uptempo song was the obvious choice :?

Sometimes, the way they think kinda scares me tbh :?

Re: FRANCE 2016

You know when they made up that "hit potential" bullshit for jury criteria this year I thought too bad Jessy was too early otherwise he would have done better....

then I remembered they don't give a shit about France and that rule most likely wouldn't benefit them anyway

That was a shame :(

That sounds out of the world (until you realise that Norway chose Stella Mwangi with Haba Haba a year later and got their worst result ever)

Sometimes, the way they think kinda scares me tbh :?

So it does to me

Any song by Kendji would have finished in top 10.
Send him France, s'il te plait!

Argh, the whole 'hit potential' criteria just annoys me. It's pretty much saying 'your rating of this song should depend on how much you think other people might like the song', so you can end up with a pile of generic pop that nobody really likes getting a bunch of points just because of some jurors going 'well, it's mainstream pop, it should be able to become a hit.' I also blame this criteria in part for Italy losing out in the jury votes this year - yes, Sweden's song was more likely to become a hit, but why should that matter? The contest should decide its own winner through votes, and not just be influenced by some juror's predictions of how people might think. Bleh. :?

Preach! And if they truly followed that "Commercial-material" rule this year, they would have ranked Estonia, Slovenia and Australia way higher than Cyprus, Norway, or Russia, that had much less potential to be successful past the contest itself.
AND they wouldn't have voted for "Rise Like A Phoenix" in the first place...

Again, like all their rules, it applies to certain songs and not to others.

Re: FRANCE 2016

For the first time, we'll broadcast all 3 shows live. And after 5 years on France Ô (a channel with zero visibility), it comes back on France 4 (a channel with very poor ratings - there was a debate wether it should be given up or not - but more visible and with a young audience).

Does it mean that they're going to take it more seriously ?

They could have broadcasted the semis on France 3 instead, but that's an interesting move nonetheless. I've always found it offensive that they were broadcasting only one semi.

Past that news, I don't think it means that much. Last year, the final went from France 3 to France 2, but our entry remained very "France 3" so I'm waiting for what they're planning to do music-wise because we've got enough bottom 5 for the century to come. It's time for radical change.

No. The fact they will show all 3 live means nothing. The BBC show all 3 shows live as well, and you know how much they take it serious.
