Please no ballads! Imo French sounds better with uptempo songs (even rap).
I agree in part: French sounds GREAT with ballads, but they just don't work at ESC
Of course there are some mid tempo songs that placed slightly better (like Monts et merveilles) but over all these results do not back up your argument, that french ballads don't work at Eurovision. I would rather say - IF something works for France, then it's ballads. Problem is, they need to find modern ballads.
Please, they just don't work at NOWADAYS Esc, or to say, they just don't work at Esc anymore, in the last 10/15 years (Patricia Kaas is an exception because she was already a very well known superstar) and it's not on me (I love French ballads), it's the taste of the new public. I wasn't talking about the past, I'm sorry this wasn't very clear.
(The fact that even uptempo songs don't work, well, who's to blame for that? France needs to solve THIS problem to find new appeal)
But I think we agree on the point, that France has to reinvent itself to be successful again. Be it with an uptempo song or a modern form of ballad.
I think they should try something young and fresh. A french Lena, if you will. Or they could go for something in the style of Jesse Matador or (if they go for ballads) something very simple and authentic in the style of "boy with guitar"...
A strong personality has to do the trick. Be it Lena-like, be a boy with guitar. Personally I can't stand Jesse Matador, his song was awful... it's not a zumba course and we don't need any more carybbean beats :?
And of course, we got our best results in televote with that (8th) :?
I remember that Bruno Berberes, our head of delegation at that time, said in an interview that they chose Jessy because the contest was held in Norway, so Norwegians are all white, they're cold and boring and don't have that many occasions to party = so choosing a West Indies-sounding uptempo song was the obvious choice :?
Sometimes, the way they think kinda scares me tbh :?
You know when they made up that "hit potential" bullshit for jury criteria this year I thought too bad Jessy was too early otherwise he would have done better....
Argh, the whole 'hit potential' criteria just annoys me. It's pretty much saying 'your rating of this song should depend on how much you think other people might like the song', so you can end up with a pile of generic pop that nobody really likes getting a bunch of points just because of some jurors going 'well, it's mainstream pop, it should be able to become a hit.' I also blame this criteria in part for Italy losing out in the jury votes this year - yes, Sweden's song was more likely to become a hit, but why should that matter? The contest should decide its own winner through votes, and not just be influenced by some juror's predictions of how people might think. Bleh. :?

For the first time, we'll broadcast all 3 shows live. And after 5 years on France Ô (a channel with zero visibility), it comes back on France 4 (a channel with very poor ratings - there was a debate wether it should be given up or not - but more visible and with a young audience).
Does it mean that they're going to take it more seriously ?

No. The fact they will show all 3 live means nothing. The BBC show all 3 shows live as well, and you know how much they take it serious.
