Well taste differs. I honestly can't say his music bothers me. His music is not new, I know. His character is simply annoying. He has a huge ego. People might find him pretty, I honestly don't see why. His tattoos are soooo ugly, wait and see when he is 40 .

I don't find it offensive to say French music can be attractive and boring mentioning his name. Kids here all hate French as a school subject. It's an utterly boring language. Well, everything is dominated by the Anglosaxon culture. Their fav tv-show, their fav singer, are all American or British. Their favorite place to be is Starbucks. They cannot relate to French whatsoever. I used Pokora in class and his cheap, and for them good-looking appearance, opened actually a new world to them. They have an image that French is for oldies, that it has a boring music scene etc. Showing them what kids in France like, is showing them that French and France is not boring, but also attractive :D. Instead of using classic French songs (I adore them), I try to find newer music. I already used Pokora, Tal, PZK,... If they worked good, I let them listen to a new released song at the end of the hour just before the bell and they are always enthousiast. They liked French more. So I don't see the problem :p.

Yeah, fortunately taste differs ;) I was overreacting to your sentence because I simply don't get all the success he enjoyed recently. I don't find him handsome either, but one just has to read the fans' comments to understand that they're in love with him firstly because "he's sooo handsome", the music comes in second place. But that's ok, many people tend to forget that singing well should be the main quality of a singer.

Otherwise, your story is cute and I can only applaud how you make an effort to show to your kids that French music isn't made for the elderly only. But honestly, you said it yourself : the Anglosaxon supremacy takes up all the space... And I clearly don't see what's different when listening to Pokora and Tal. I mean, apart from the French lyrics, those singers do have americanized songs too, so no wonder your kids may like it since it doesn't change that much from what they're used to listen to. What about Grégoire? Christophe Maé? Nolwenn Leroy? They're far from being US-copycats.

Just to clarify, Pokora and Tal could fit the ESC well, no doubt. What I fear is that their hypothetical entries would be certainly below our recent standards. I mean : "Et S'il Fallait Le Faire", "Sognu" and "L'enfer Et Moi" were musically more demanding than their entire material, and I wish we could keep on sending "out-of-the-box"-ish entries rather than joke ones or cheap ones.

Here's a xkiss to make it up :p.

Radios only use popular music and France has that quota that idk 60%(?) of the music has to be in French?
It's 40% in fact. I thought myself it was more... :D

is music is not new, I know. His character is simply annoying. He has a huge ego. People might find him pretty, I honestly don't see why. His tattoos are soooo ugly, wait and see when he is 40 .
So I'm the only one who finds him attractive !  I hate tatoos but well, he's very handsome... xheat And he's rather a nice boy. He used to play the fake bad boy to have an American attitude, but he's usually praised for being nice and not too "egotic". He's not Parisian after all... But yes his music is quite poor...

True these are good materials for school ! :) My friend who teaches French in :de: makes their pupils listen to this kind of music. She studies Zaz as well, as her pupils demanded it and even for some chose French because of her ! But actually, I've never seen any of my pupils listening to him, except girls of 11 years old... The same who likes Justin Bieber... Though I nearly finted when last year I heard my 4èmes (14 y.o.) speaking about One-Direction ! xshock
They make me listen a lot (in the last days...) of Maître Gims... xfacepalm Because kids are all fans of the homophobic stupid Sexion d'Assaut xcry1
My 3èmes (15 y.o.) love Keen-V. He's meeish as well, though funny...
But above all, they listen to US pop, dance, Rihanna and so on... They listen very few to French things, except the Goldman things and the stupid musicals. Yep, they luuuuved "Mozart l'opéra rock" xfacepalm xfacepalm xfacepalm

3 years ago I asked one day to 4èmes : "Which French playrights do you know ?" "Molière !" "Yes !" "Mozart l'opéra rock" "xfacepalm xcry1 oOXxgaahx0sxfruits:xacademic"

Mozart l'opéra rock sounds interesting. :D Molière? Isn't it a bit dated?
Surprised by this Keen-V reggae though.

To me it seems you need to scratch the surface a bit to find the great French music. Maybe it's more scenes and exposure possibilities that is needed for it to reach mainstream channels?

Well, I'm not a fan fan fan of him, but his music doesn't bother me. Kids adore looks and idols, to whom they look up too and want to be like. Justin Bieber or 1D isn't high quality either. So I try to seduce them first with Tal or Pokora. They liked it. Some put it on their iPod and tell me "Oooh monsieur, j'ai euh en néerlandais? I downloaded some song of Tal". I really like her ". I want them to experience something different. Okay it's "american Frenchie pop", but afterwards they are more open towards other stuff as well, cause French can be cool. I used "Je t'emmène au vent" too, they liked it as well. During my intern, kids called it "the same old, boring French music", they amost fell asleep, well my kids were trying to sing it and dancing on their chairs :D. They ask me what I like to see. I say "Les Bleus", "Clara Sheller", "Fais pas ci fais pas ça", "Bref.". I wrote it down on the board and some of kids searched for it. It may not be the classic French culture, but maybe someday they want to read Molière or Racine or Camus, cause they like French culture.

I'm a big fan of the artist you mentioned, but I never used them. I think they would like them too. I used "Manau" as background music to play "Les Loups-garous de Thiercelieux". They love this game and when I mentioned it is French. They were like . So I try to modernize French classes with, I agree, kinda superficial cheap pop tunes in order to get their attention. I just bribe them . "Look French is not that difficult, you can learn with cool pop songs :D". It's also a quite effective way of learning. On the exam, there are always kids who say "Sire, we haven't seen this". "Remember Tal?" "Ooooh!".

Pokora and Tal would be perfect for Eurovision :D. I agree with you, France being one of the best ESC countries should continue its strategy. The out-of-the-box entries are awesome and I appreciate them :D!

 xrose

It's 40% in fact. I thought myself it was more... :D

I thought it was more too. I like this rule though :D. A few years ago Flemish parties protested against the music in the Brussels metro system. Too much French . What happened, only English music is allowed . I don't know if they already have changed it :D.

He's not ugly, but totally not someone "I want a poster of him on my wall" :D. There are way more French hotties in the music scene: Renan Luce, Florent Mothe, Maxim Nucci,... or my fav Jérémie Elkaïm . He's an artist, but I like the roles he play in "Main dans la main" and "La guerre est déclarée". Or Mathieu Charneau !

True these are good materials for school ! :) My friend who teaches French in :de: makes their pupils listen to this kind of music. This music is popular amongst the kids. They liked me too, cause I made cool classes :D. Omg Antoine, they wrote all "I xheart 1D" on their tests and in their workbooks. I said, I never ever want to see this "crap" again on my tests. "I xheart Pokora" or "I xheart Tal" is acceptable, but no English wannabe music artists :D.

Mine too :D! Stromae, Maître Gims, they love it. Once I was too exited about "Je me tire", I just showed it to them after that moment it became a hit over here. And they were all so proud they discovered it before it became a hit xheart. I love them too ! I know they're homophobic, but I can't stop listening to their music. They made their apologies though :(.

I love Keen-V and "Mozart l'opéra rock" too . I would perfectly fit in your classroom !!! My all time favourite is still "Le Roi Soleil". That was brilliant :D.

Hahahah gotta love those kids :D.

Molière is the basement of French lessons in collège. We study him every year. :) But the thing is that my pupils thought Mozart l'Opéra rock was a piece of French litterature ! xrofl3 xfacepalm

Yes, one need to scratch a lot, because on the other hand, you have ultra elitist music... Well, I like intellectual singers as well, but sometimes, all this stream of bla-bla becomes so boring... There was a trend some years ago of singers telling their lives on the same tune, with stories on going on holidays by car, going to pick up children after school... So that there were parodies, songs about cleaning up, having breakfast and so on, but it was just like that. Though, I like some of these songs as well...
But, I just find it lacks a space of complete good pop, between mainstream cheap and poetry songs without tune... Well, there's a new generation coming, but I'd like something more consistent. Amandine Bourgeois was a perfect filler, but she was always stuck in her career...

What happened, only English music is allowed .
  Oh ! Belgium...

Oh la la !!! xheat So many hot guys from my country ! xrofl3 Florent Mothes has become really interesting I must say... Though I really don't know what he acctually sings now... The cover of the CD is enough for me xrofl3 xrofl3 xrofl3

Oh yes these kids were so adorable xcry1 xlove It was a pity to leave them... :( I hope I will be in a collège with nice kids in September...
I remember now they liked Tal as well.

But yeah, I was very surprised they even knew One-Direction, because I live and work in a very isolated countryside... Meh, I made a little party in my class with my eldest pupils, and all the boys were exchanging picture of tractors, I was just xrofl3

But let's look to one of my pupils FB... She likes Sexion d'Assaut, Disiz,Youssoupha, Idols contestants, Guetta, Keen V, Shaka Ponk, Colonel Reyel, Patrick Bruel , Indochine , PZK, Saez, Superbus and Coeur de Pirate as for francophones... :)

Le Roi soleil reminds me my early years of being student, while it was played massively on the local radio we listened to all day long... I ended up copying the album on my computer ! xrofl3 But meh musicals... I just have the feeling they are all the same. When I was kiddie, Notre Dame de Paris was a huge thing. We all knew everything by heart. And after, we had copies of copies and strangest things, like the famous rave party of Cindy... xrofl3
We had also a fake Cléopatre in my région, without Sofia Essaïdi ! xrofl3
And I had an awkward moment, while looking "N'oubliez pas les paroles" on TV, I find out I knew all the song "Les Rois du monde" of Romé & Juliette by heart, and I was "Oh Lord, how came I know this song by heart !" I was so ashamed !!!! xrofl3

As for Sexion d'Assault, I really dislike them... I only tolerate as rappers Orelsan and Abd-al-Malik because they are really awesome. I miss the old times of Diam's when I was in lycée and we all sang "J'sais qu'j'suis pas une bombe latine ni une blonde platine" in my classroom ! xrofl3

An universal problem really. I guess it's the same all over Europe, Swedish example Agnes (and Loreen) - typical fall between two stools and the need to be constantly supersuccessful to keep floating. I think Amandine Bourgeois did an amazing performance in ESC with a good, but not great song.

I'm gonna miss them too xcry1! They were so adorable. They made a special video for my birthday xheart.

Hahaha! Well, I worked near a big city, so I was sometimes wondered "Wow you guys know that ". They all went mad when I said 1D. "Sir, who do you like the most?" "Stop it you freaks :p". Harry did this, Zayn did that,... Get a life . OMG PICTURES OF TRACTORS !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Remembers of a friend of mine. She fancied a boy and the first time he asked her out was to a tractor show !!!!!

She or he has taste . I'm not gonna reveal my list !! This is what I've found by one of my students:lol: : LMFAO, Carly Rae Jepsen, 1D, Liam Payne (5x), Usher, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, BEP... and TAL !!

Me too, it was at the end of high school for me! I was so crazy about Le Roi Soleil ! And when I started university Christophe Maé started his carreer xlove. We had to read some books about the history of France and I chose "Anne D''Autriche". I have the DVD, albums, poster, book

Lol @ video    Roméo and Juliette? Was it with Grégory Baquet ?? I also like the Notre-Dame de Paris . So beautiful songs. "Belle" I love that one!

OrelSan is realllllllllyyyy good. I love him too. He's my "Dieu tout puissant".

I know I'm a French freak xcry1.

No the video is taken from Cindy. It was an attempt of a musical, with Lââm as Cindirella, Carine from Star Academy, singer Assia... As the musical was made very quickly to surf on the wave of musicals, it was completely crappy. It ended up in a complete disaster with press destroying them, catastrophic sales, very few spectators and a huge lot of money lost. Afterwards, there were many other musicals that didn't work as people in France are not fond of musicals... Plus tickets are so expensive ! But as it was the first failure, it remained very famous ! All the singers present there saw their career vanish instantly, including Assia who was quite popular at the time and disappeared, and Lââm who was huge and had hard times to come back...
But with Youtube, the musical had a second career as a giant gag ! xrofl3

Well Anne d'Autriche, that's an odd choice for sure ! xrofl3

I know I'm a French freak .

I'm so relieved that they liked some other music genres like Manau and Louise Attaque. Anyway, don't give up experimenting :p It's a clever way to keep them interested (at least temporarily) in French language. I wish I could have learned English with music.

Otherwise, please no karaoke singers taken from past musicals! Toinou03 said it all : Starmania and Notre Dame de Paris were the best French musicals ever. From that moment on, it went from quite decent (Les dix commandements, Roméo & Juliette, Cléopâtre) to abysmal (Cindy, Robin des Bois, Adam & Eve), at every level: music-wise, lyrics-wise or vocally. Actually, they just bored people by creating too many mediocre musicals in a short period of time, it kinda killed the genre.

Again, France 3 should look for someone who can deliver live like Amandine, and then they have to focus on a very good song because I got the impression that they sometimes relied more on the singer's name than on the content itself (Anggun's failure comes to my mind).

LOL, that musical seems lame ! Yeah, Lââm had a rough time in her carreer, didn't know it was because of this . Never heard of it tbh . I thought musicals were pretty popular in France. In Flanders they're crappy xpuke. You have in France "Notre-Dame", "Le Roi Soleil", "Cléopâtre", "Mozart, l'opéra rock", they were popular right? An American friend has front row tickets for Robin des Bois (I used a video with Pokora to illustrate who Robin des Bois was in class, caue they didn't understand it. Afterwards "OOOH Robin Hood".) don't know if I want to see that one :p.

I see it now, but I meant of course "Sir" not "Sire", I'm not a King or Prince :p (well in the classroom I am ).

There are always people, who don't like those songs, but most of them don't think "oh yet another boring song". Everyone loves Manau, but it's also a cult hit here :D. Like you said it is interesting. Most of them have the attitude, it's boring, I don't bother. Two most hated subjects in Flanders are maths (understandable imo ) and Frenc . They also said they really liked my classes and even though I could only give grammar, I used lots of material and games to make it interesting.

Hmm if they have a good song, it would be okayish I think if they can sing the song and it's a lovely song :D.

Anyway whatever they might choose, I'm looking forward to it :D.

Afterwards "OOOH Robin Hood".) don't know if I want to see that one .

Yes there has been several musicals that achieved a big success, but a huge lot that failed. After Notre Dame, there were so manies projects that came out of nowhere, thinking that people would come and see everything...
Just last year, there were 1789 which achieved some success (though the story was a huge nonsense ) but there was also Adam & Eve which failed badly and was stopped right after its begining... So, it doesn't always succeed...

New one will be Robin des Bois. It will probably suceed as there is M. Pokora. It's a new thing to see confirmed artists in musicals... We didn't see that since the early days...

BTW, former musical singers are an option for Eurovision. Bruno Berberes works for a lot of them, and has tried before to make the singers enter Eurovision. But usually, they are not chosen. Until... xshrug

It may be for the better since most of them don't have charisma  and now, they even don't have decent vocal skills. I know I shouldn't compare what's incomparable but look at Notre Dame : there were Garou, Bruno Pelletier, Patrick Fiori, Daniel Lavoie, Hélène Ségara, Julie Zenatti, Luck Mervil... They all had distinct great voices and had a lot of charisma. I watched the musical again last week and throughout it, I really got into the history tbh, I even forgot this was a musical. Plus time proved that these singers were worth paying attention to : they all had careers.

On the contrary, I watched Mozart which is a decent one but the singers are very formatted : ok-ish voices, good looks, and first and foremost lots of visual stuff to impress the audience. Even the songs more or less follow the same pattern, it has become a genre in itself. Imo that's why people aren't as excited about musicals as they were in the past, it doesn't push the envelope in any way.

As to Robin des Bois, choosing Pokora was a stroke of genius, they knew from the beginning that it'd be a complete failure otherwise . I was astonished by the cheapness and the non-inspiration they put in it : musically, vocally, visually, lyrics-wise... It's enough to make me cry. I consider it as a new Pokora album in disguise, it's the same old plain dull tunes that you forget even before they end. It would be interesting to see how successful the tour will be, because any of the singles made waves in the charts.

Nice song ! :D

Band from my region Cocoon and The Do are known for having open the door to French pop in English :)
I'm not personally shocked that French people can sing in English. Well there are... Oh France ! But these are cool bands ! And I can't blame people from my little region ! :p

BTW, I'm found of this kind of song... La Grande Sophie
Anaïs
Superbus

I'd like to have pop like that from on our part. We never did that while it's a huge part of what we do ! :)

Oh yeah toinou03! I forgot Superbus, they must participate someday! They're all about catchiness. Here are my two favourite songs from them when they happen to sing in English:

Here's the link for the second one, I couldn't find the studio version on Youtube.

I'd also cheer La Grande Sophie, she'd bring some quality entry.

Hm...
As I understand David Guetta comes from 90s French techno/dance, doesn't he? He must have some friends around in Paris and surely some new names must have emerged since then. Perhaps the genre isn't considered ESC? Singer-songwriter isn't everything. :D
