Chimène has cancelled all her concerts because she has problem with her voice. She always has. She said that's why she retired. She did too much with her voice... So I don't believe she would do it, though she is really the best singer in France in terms of voice...

As for Najoua, I liked her first album... Her second album was rather bad and it failed badly... Fortunately she changed all management... But the new excerpt of her new single is not promising at all... It sounds rather poor... Najoua Belyzel - Que sont ils devenus (single 2013) - YouTube ( the only available video on YT i from "gay Rhône-Alpes xrofl3)
I'm very sad for her because she's a great person, but she really doesn't go on the right direction...

As for Tal, she's really better than a "decent singer for teenager". Well, I wasn't interested in her before listening to her during the "Victoires" and I was really surprised. She's a really good singer as well as a gifted musician. She's way above the Shy'm/Pokora/soft bland pop generation. That's why she has been chosen to be one of the "newcomers of the year" I guess...

Yeah, I know that Chimène is currently not able to do anything music-wise, it's sad because I thought she had some vocal training, too bad she hurt her voice. I wasn't suggesting her for next year especially though, imo she may be an interesting potential participant in the future.

By the way, thanks for putting the link to the new song of Najoua. :) I agree it's not quite as good as her first efforts, hope that it's only a demo. However, her second album had quite a few songs that were really good, but she messed everything up by releasing "La Bienvenue" and "M (Hey Hey Hey)" that are just cheap and void songs.

I'd be delighted to have an entry from her like one of these two :

As to Tal, I was thinking of the same performance for the "Victoires". You can really tell that she can sing, even if she oversang her song towards the end that night imo. I have nothing against Tal, actually she is one of the few "serious" contender we have for Eurovision, but I fear that if she takes part in it, she'd sing some basic teenage pop. With a voice like hers, she should be more ambitious musically. As you said, we often compare her with Shy'm and Pokora who can't sing to save their lives... Because of her songs, just check out her recent releases "Danse" and "A l'international"... I mean, she would be so much better with more mature material.

Yes I really like Tal but she's just a commercial product ATM. As long as that's the case, TF1 will keep her close and she'll never get close to France 3 and the ESC.

I would love to see (or rather; hear) som contemporary french music with arab influence. I guess no other european country has such a big scene for contemporary arabic or arabic influenced music (correct me if I am wrong).

Probably a candidate for the unpopular posts thread at this forum though. :D
Both Turkey and Israel have a huge hidden treasure to dig in with middle eastern music. I love it! xheart

Arab music still charts well in France, but it's less in fashion nowadays. But another Amina-like song is still possible. :)

In the National awards "Victoires de la musique". African & Oriental music are often awarded for the Award for World music/
Since the last 10 years, you had 2004 cape-verdian Cesaria Evora, 2005 malian Amadou & Mariam, 2006 Algerian Souad Massi, 2009 malian Rokia Traoré, 2010 malian Salif Keita, 2011 morrocan Hindi Zahra, and 2013 again Amadou & Mariam. All of them are really great ! :)

As for urban music, it has faded really... We use to have "rai" but it does bad now... Because RnB itself has almost disappeared and all these persons became anonymous...
e had big hits like this many years ago...
Leslie & Amine - Sobri - YouTube

African pop is still (though less) popular... Matador featured on this one which was a summer hit last year :)

Well, O would be very happy with Oriental music, but... there are so many fuking racists now. They went all mad because there is since some years a programm dedicated to Ramadan on TV... past midnight... And as well a party in the City Hall of Paris... Come on, who cares ! We can celebrate Muslim community once a year...

Agree!

And please remember that our broadcaster is France 3. Sending symphonic metal is very unlikely imo

And regional programs... So that it may be the channel I watch most in fact !   xrofl3 Call me papy ! xrofl3

Hey you watch PBLV ! Oh ! I can't help but being a fan... Though it's now bad seen... But I can't help but having guilty pleasures !!! xrofl3

Anyway, France 3 has a curious taste of music usually but they chose Tellier, Jessy... So they can go in all the directions... Though they usually aren't very ambitious... But i don't think, contrary to all my compatriots (as we say), that they choose songs in order to fail. I'm sure they really want to win, but they just go always on the wrong direction ! xrofl3

Add to that we have the crappiest music scene ever... How will we do ? We only have cover albums by now. And people buy it !!! Why do people from my country buy albums in which crappy singers cover songs from masters of music, with the poorest arrangements ever ???? I can't understand why they put their money in such crap !

I'd love for France to send a song in a Breton style, like Nolwenn Leroy's stuff (if not her herself :D). That music is so interesting and I think it'd do well at ESC, especially with juries, Scots and the Irish ;)

France2 is my bestie tbh, but I can't help to watch PBLV sometimes :D. It's very lame and nothing happens, but I just love the location and the characters :p.

Nah, I don't think they choose in order to fail. I don't know why France keeps failing tbh? I like most of the entries. A ballad like Natasha again would be awesome. I think my love for French began when I heard "Je n'ai que mon âme"!! I have all her albums xheart.

Excuse-me????? Crapiest music scene ever??? If I was near you with my posse of French music addicts, we would have smacked you in the face !!! (Just kidding of course) BEST MUSIC SCENE EVER you mean !!!!!!! I love French music, the concerts I attend are most of the time French artists. Maybe the only French artist I dislike is Johnny Halliday. He had his best time.
What I dislike though is that I don't know how to explain is, but like Tal I like her music, but she makes French music so American?? I don't know how to explain it, but it's a feeling.

And those cover artists, true that! Goldman is the best, but I like Pokora's version too. It's modern and very attractive material to use in classrooms. Kids tell me "OMG I don't know French has cool and modern music."

So basically I love French music, I adore it and can't live without it  !!!

You ment smashed no ? xrofl3 xrofl3 xrofl3

Meh I find this teen-pop quite lame... Actually I'm so jealous of britt pop... At least lots of European country have great pop they can export and all we have is lame people copying outdated American things... But the problem is that music ccompanies only support these projects... Radios only air covers now...
Well I listen very few French things... And to have some French speaking music which charts high, we need our neighbours. Number 1 is for now Stromae, who is great. But we lack talents like him here in France...

But here and there there are awesome albums, like lat year's "Long courrier" by BB Brunes or "Le calme et la tempête" by Olivia Ruiz, in 2011 "Et vous tu m'aimes" by Brigitte, "Love revolution" by Inna Modja... But, we could and should do so much more if there would be more ambition, and much more support. When you think that Zaz is the only girl to chart abroad and is constantly attacked by everyone here...

Oh Antoine, you dirty boy ! Smack someone in the face can also mean "to strike or slap smartly, with or as if with the open hand".

That teen pop is quite lame indeed, but it doesn't reflect your country's music. I would still be proud of it. Your country makes its own teen pop. We import it from the USA or Canada :/. Like you said, you also have brilliant artists like BB Brunes or Olivia Ruiz and Inna Modja. I also like Saez. French music is quite diverse though. French music is also export music, at least to its francophone neighbors. There is also M83, Yodelice, Shaka Ponk, François and the Atlas Mountains,...

Oh well, Wallonia relies on its southern neighbour to fill the charts. Stromae is I think an exception. He's called the new Jacques Brel :D.

 I didn't understand ! I didn't know this expression ! I'm an idiot... xcry1 But this is a less violent issue then ! xrofl3

I even don't know everyone in that list or very few... I will listen to them more carefully ! ;) Anyway, TV and radios don't support artists like that... Which is sad.
And, our charts that I posted, makes me so annoyed... :?

Sounds like a good idea but... Denmark already did it!

Nolwenn Leroy would be great since she's a talented singer and one of the few "out-of-the-box"-ish mainstrean artists we have. But I can't see her representing France soon, she's far too popular at the moment and I don't think she wants to enter a contest again ;)

And as we are all talking about our abundant (!) French music scene, I seize the opportunity to post my opinion, which will certainly be unpopular here... I mean, that's right, we may have lots and lots of talented musicians and singers out there... but imo when all they do is singing in English and copying BritPop or whatever US-related music, musically what's the point of calling them French then? I don't say that those people have to go old-fashioned "chanson française" to be called so, they should just remember that 1. French isn't an awful language to sing and it can even appeal to foreign countries (cf. Zaz), 2. The Beatles were awesome but they aren't the only ones one can take inspiration from.

Finally, I'll be rude on purpose  Pokora has no talent whatsoever, his cds sell well because he's got a pretty-ish face and he relies too much on covers, like pretty much everyone else at the moment. Mentioning his name to say that French music can be attractive and modern is offensive imo :? As far as I remember, his career is filled with cheap uptempo nonsense and cheesy tearful ballads. Maybe I forget that he's a product for teenagers? Maybe I'm getting old? Maybe both? Anyway, that was my grumpy post for today!

No worries . Oh we all have that once or twice or three or even more (my case). We cannot know everything ;). Here's a xkiss to make it up :p.

Well, these artist are more known on festivals. Radios only use popular music and France has that quota that idk 60%(?) of the music has to be in French? I heard some of those artists on the radio and they are widely known among festival addicts.

Music charts only reflect the popular music nowadays, it doesn't give you a general view on what you country makes. Those charts look the same in Belgium. Cheap pop music for the masses, I call it :p.

Well taste differs. I honestly can't say his music bothers me. His music is not new, I know. His character is simply annoying. He has a huge ego. People might find him pretty, I honestly don't see why. His tattoos are soooo ugly, wait and see when he is 40 .

I don't find it offensive to say French music can be attractive and boring mentioning his name. Kids here all hate French as a school subject. It's an utterly boring language. Well, everything is dominated by the Anglosaxon culture. Their fav tv-show, their fav singer, are all American or British. Their favorite place to be is Starbucks. They cannot relate to French whatsoever. I used Pokora in class and his cheap, and for them good-looking appearance, opened actually a new world to them. They have an image that French is for oldies, that it has a boring music scene etc. Showing them what kids in France like, is showing them that French and France is not boring, but also attractive :D. Instead of using classic French songs (I adore them), I try to find newer music. I already used Pokora, Tal, PZK,... If they worked good, I let them listen to a new released song at the end of the hour just before the bell and they are always enthousiast. They liked French more. So I don't see the problem :p.
