Re: FRANCE 2012 - Anggun
esctoday interview
How did you react with the mediatic storm and coverage in France when it was announced that you were chosen to represent France for Eurovision ?
It’s incredible. This proves there is a true expectation within the public when it comes to Eurovision, in spite of what some say. The public feels involved and wants France to shine in this contest.
Has it change your everyday life ?
I am currently very busy with the promotion of my album Echos (Echoes), which has been released recently. So it gives me much more work of course (LOL). I have many positive reactions from the public, I receive a lot of messages of encouragement. I think the big change will surely take place in the forthcoming days, as my team and I are working on the artistic part of the song, then I want to promote the song all around Europe.
How will you choose the song ? Did you ask several composers ?
We are presently receiving songs. We have called upo both French and foreign teams. The search is on its way and it’s very exciting !
When will you make the choice public ?
I don’t know yet. France Télévisions will decide. My personal goal currently is to find a very good and strong entry.
The possibility of using use of English language, even only in a part of the song, makes some people angry. What would you answer ?
Air and Daft Punk offer what the best French music has in store all over the world, and they sing in English. I have just taken part in a wonderful tribute CD to Gilbert Bécaud, who wrote the great Let it be me, an English adaptation of Je t’appartiens, performed by Elvis Presley, among others. It shows the talent of the French composers and lyricists, even when it’s not performed in French. French music is passed on not only thanks to the language, but also with the talent of those who write the song. I do understand the importance of French language in France. My music is exported in French. My new single, Mon meilleur ami, was the most broadcast French-speaking song last Summer (source Francophonie Diffusion), so I am a strong defender of the French language. But why shall we stick to a 100% song in French, as many Europeans don’t understand our language ? Natasha Saint-Pier performed part of her song in English and this certainly helped her to touch people with words they can understand. I consider she was right. We can provide a song mixing both languages. Besides, this would be a universal message.
Are you planning an international promotional campaign in the coming months? Have you worked on a schedule yet?
Yes, I will soon be in Italy, Belgium, Switzerland and Poland. Then I am planning a pan European tour after choosing the song in order to promote our entry across the continent. Promo dates will be planned and scheduled in Russia, Greece, Portugal, Ukraine, Turkey.
Are there past Eurovision performances you still remember?
Dana International with Diva, and the symbol of tolerance this song brought, which is top value for me. I also liked Patrica Kaas and her classy performance. I loved Lordi, as I grew up with metal music ! I think Amaury Vassili didn’t achieve the placing he deserved. I know him well, he’s a charming and talented guy.
Are you inspired by any performance in particular? How do you intend to perform and present yourself in Baku?
I want portray a fresh look. I don't want to say “I must do this or I must do that”. I want to provide a great show, as I have already mentioned earlier , I would like to give the most beautiful and memorable performance with a song that will make the French public and fans feel proud and honoured. I know that the hopes are high. I want to go to Baku with a winning spirit, but I have to be humble, since the contest is a big arena where there many countries competing in their quest to win the 1st prize and bring the trophy back home.
