Re: FRANCE 2012 - Anggun

The second part was said in jest and the first part is just truth. How many recent non-English singing winners have we had? The stats don't lie. Whether your song is good or bad, it has a better chance of winning if done in English, I don't see why people have such a problem with that.

Just because the stats are like this, doesn't make it any better? Well the main problem is that the whole concept about representing our nations/countries are dying in favor of imperialism and anti-nation ideology. I thought ESC was a project to bring Europe together and get to know and appreciate all of Europe?, instead it's becoming the entertainment aspect of the EU instead; deleting European diversity in the name of music.

And I don't hate non-english songs. My 3 favourites last year were all sung in other languages (France, Bulgaria and Cyprus) and I appreciated the diversity, but from a more distant view, singing in English makes total sense as more countries will understand what is being said and can connect with the song more.

But how is it diverse if all songs will be in English? The last part is a myth, it's not true that a majority understand English, in some countries English is not even the 2nd or 3rd most known language. Yes it's true that English might be the most widely known language, but it has been exaggerated to fit the "English in ESC" agenda though.

Well, I am one of those who are connected to the music and melodies, not the words. In some examples I can even feel more connected without understanding. I find beauty in different languages, and it also helps the songs building certain unique characters which gets lost if all gets sung in the same language.

Again, I'm not disagreeing with a lot of what you are saying. ESC would be much worse off without countries singing in different languages, but the broadcasters need to do what they feel is necessary to maximise their chances of a good result. Singing in English is always top of that list.

I think broadcasters should just send what they want and not caring so much about the results. The problem is the current juries and the system in general, changes should be made by EBU instead of broadcasters desperately do everything to cater to a very narrow-minded view on music.

The big problem is just people who wants to listen songs which they don't understand.. I can't believe that you hate english in ESC friends... Are you sure ? Maybe Turkey's Deli was swearing to you in 2008 ? how do you know ? I won't vote and I won't like the songs which I don't understand. So go Anggun ! I love you.

Well I think some esc songs are way better in their own language than in english for example Serbia 2007
so not voting for an entry because you don't understand it, bit weird but your opinion off course

I can accept that France put some english sentences into their songs. But a full english song as 2008 is not something to be proud of. it's a submission to another culture and it's like rejecting its own culture.

Agree, but this goes for ALL countries, not just France.

What I find interesting is that everyone care so much if France submits to English, but they don't care a bit if others do the same. Does this mean French language and culture is more worth that others?

On the other hand I can see the point, because France always kept their pride in ESC, and therefor I guess it's one of those countries people expect not to sell out.

2008 was a pretty awful entry btw, French wouldn't have helped it that much even.

If France wants to sing in French, English or a mixture of both, let them. It's up to them to decide!

Sure, but we are here to discuss right? Otherwise what's the point really if we can't have opinions on what the countries send and choses for ESC?
