Re: FINLAND 2012

The Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE is releasing more and more information about their new major contest, UMK (Contest for New Music). The contest is said to be looking for the best song of the year, with the added prize of representing Finland at the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Baku. The first demo send in has been introduced on the YLE website as well more details on how the selections will proceed.

Demos for songs wanting to take part in UMK are being accepted until the end of September. Of the submitted songs a professional jury will select the best entries, that will be published online. The jury will then select 12 songs, that will be made into radio versions. Eight best of these will be selected to go on a tour of live club gigs. Finally only the six best of these will take part in the Grand final on 25 February, when the decision will move over to the Finnish public. The winner of the UMK final will then represent Finland in Baku in May.

These are the members of the pre-selection jury announced so far: Anna Laine (Radio Helsinki), Jaako Hurme (Bassoradio), Wallu Valpio (Hitlantis), Music Export Finland, Tomi Saarinen (YleX), Johan Lindroos (X3M) and Jorma Hietamäki (Radio Suomi). There will be music industry professionals mentoring the candidates during the first rounds in January and February, and this progress will be televised in five shows by YLE TV2.

YLE has also published a video interview with the artists, who were first to submit a demo to UMK. The song is called Anna aikaa by rappers KaksKaks feat. Alisa from Turku. See the video here, with excerpts of the first song ever to take part in UMK (it has not been revealed yet whether this song will progress any further).

Re: FINLAND 2012

YLE, The Finnish Broadcasting Company, has revealed another name that has submitted a song to UMK, Contest for New Music. Korpiklaani is one of Finland's successful musical exports and strangely the folk metal band is better known abroad than at home. The last week of submissions is starting for UMK and the pace has been very fast according to YLE sources.

Korpiklaani is a folk metal band, that has been active since 2003. They do songs in Sámi, Finnish and English. They use traditional Finnish instruments in their music. The lyrics are often about alcohol and partying. Many people would argue this sort of music is what has been the most successful type to come from Finland, and the band is constantly touring the world, including Japan and USA. They want to use UMK to make themselves better known on the domestic market as well, even if they would not get selected to become Eurovision song contest candidates for Finland.

One of their notable song:

I was going to post that ESC Today story too.

This is very good news. Four years without a Finnish metal entry is too many, in my view.

Re: FINLAND 2012

The new show to select the Finnish entry for the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest, UMK or Contest for new music has closed the song submissions at the weekend. For technical reasons an extra 24 hours was granted for artists to enter their songs for YLE, The Finnish Broadcasting Company. Some names have already been revealed amongst the songs submitted, and now the jury will deliberate which ones will firstly get put online.

Later on 12 of these songs will be made in to a radio play version using YLE studios, and eventually six will battle it out in the televised national final in February in Helsinki. Before the final, six songs will be eliminated by the judging panel after the acts perform in a series of live gigs. The acts will also have music industry professionals sparring them along the journey to the final.

According to YLE there are many familiar faces from previous Eurovision selections and otherwise established acts, but most are complete newcomers. The songs represent many genres, but female singer songwriters are well presented as bands playing traditional Finnish rock. At the same time very few entries come from metal bands. Previously YLE has fevealed two names who have sent in demos, folk metal band Korpiklaani and rappers KaksKaks.

Some artists have also revealed themselves, that they have entered UMK. One of these is Movetron, a 90's dance music act who took part at Euroviisut in 2008 with Cupido.

Re: FINLAND 2012

Without hearing the entry, my faves are definetly Korpiklaani :D I heard some of their songs before, and if the ESC entry would be just as good, then I really hope they go to Baku.

Re: FINLAND 2012

A spokesperson from YLE just said that the qualified songs will be put on UMK page on October 31. There will be about 40-50 songs to qualify, or so they said.
