The Finnish national broadcaster YLE has completely revamped the way the countrys Eurovision Song Contest entry is selected. A whole new team is in charge, a new name for the contest, now just looking for new music with the added prize of representing Finland at the international contest. The selection show will be called Uuden musiikin kilpailu (UMK), Contest for New Music and submissions for songs are now open.
The producer of UMK, Anssi Autio, told the YLE TV morning show today, that as they had the task to change the way the Finnish Eurovision Song Contest entries are selected, they decided to go for a complete overhaul. New look, new sound, new everything. We are looking for individual songs, he states. Not everything has to be made according to a Eurovision formula, he states. The Finns have been all too worried about how their songs will be received abroad, rather than just making good songs, from the heart.
Autio promises the participants a lot of visibility, which in itself will help all the contestants. The songs will be played on YLE radio stations, there will be live gigs where the songs get performed so that the there will be a build-up for a great final in February. Autio wishes to have songs in all possible musical genres and that UMK would get some inspiration from the popular Flow-festival, that has just finished in Helsinki.
The songs can be submitted to YLE from today by anybody until the 30th of September, there will then be a jury selection, auditions, live club gigs and eventually the final. The televised part of the process will start in January 2012.
Only one demo is accepted from each artist, songwriters can however submit several entries. One person in each song writing team must have permanent residence in Finland or Finnish nationality, as well as the main artist(s). The demo can submitted online or via mail, and the application form at yle.fi/umk will have to be attached. Also photos of the artists must be attached as well as the lyrics. The songs may not be submitted to any other national Eurovision selection and cannot be in any way made available to the public until 28 January 2012, with the exception of performance on YLE channels. The submitted songs can be in any language.
