I finally saw the Poland I was expecting to see throughout the competition during the 1st half of yesterday's match. But then that was it. Considering what Switzerland did for the 2nd half + extra time they totally deserved to go through instead of Poland. That sucker feeling of unfairness kicked in right after the penalty shootout was over.
During the match I was thinking to myself "Xhaka isn't playing anything today, why isn't he subbed?" Penalties are always a lottery ofc but had I been the Swiss manager he wouldn't have had the chance to even fail his own.
Sommer impressed during the shootout, guessing the side to which the Polish players kicked to all except one penalty, I think. I think he is one of the nice revelations of the tournament and one of the Swiss players that deserved the least to be knocked out like that. Plus Shaqiri for that little stunner.
On the Polish side I liked what I saw from Fabianski and Grosicki on the first half. Lewandowski has been a nulity so far
I agree that the Brit game was dull but I'm not sure if as dull as Croatia - Portugal. I am glad Northern Ireland is out anyway, good campaign but by far the most annoying national team to watch. Wales were bit a below par yesterday and maybe they've drawn their final line after yesterday's match.
About the game I least wanted to happen in this Euro...that was like a final to me but an underwhelming sort of final. It was good to see how both teams respected each other but that was far too much respect. I did not recognize that Croatia of last night at all. We do not have an exciting team but yesterday we were very clever tactically. And I don't know why but Croatia fell for that trap. They did not play as fearlessly as they had done with Spain. I fail to understand why. Also Modric playing that far behind...not clever. At times he was almost even playing as a central defender. He needed to be the creative force last night.
I think one thing should be noted...the match shouldn't have been played in Lens. The dimensions of the field...I think they limited the actions of attacking wing players. That's why so little action was seen from Perisic, for instance.
I was quite happy with our line-up for yesterday. Finally some minutes to Adrien (even if he didn't shine out...but already better performance in one match vs. Moutinho in 3). I feel extra proud of the team considering that 9 of the 14 players are Sporting products. Current squad players Patrício, Adrien, João Mário, William; former players from both the youth system and former squads such as Cédric, Quaresma, Ronaldo and Nani and José Fonte who is also a product of our youth academy. To that I can still add Pepe who tried and almost signed for Sporting before the deal did not through and Porto snatched him up and the rest is football history.
As the matches go through I keep getting more and more impressed by Raphael Guerreiro as a player. Very complete. Attacks, defends, has great stamina and if the match is dead has no fear to start initiative himself. Bravo
Also, the support for the national team yesterday was superb and the first worthy of being noted.
When Quaresma scored I did not celebrate. I was frozen not knowing how to react. I think that was the first time in long (or ever) that I did not celebrate a goal from my national team. I couldn't help but feel bad for the team that most excited me for the past two weeks. Watching Srna as emotional as that at the end of the match broke my heart. I feel sorry I won't be seeing players of the class of Vida and alikes anymore this Summer. This great team and nation just fell down to a poor draw. I wanted Croatia on the final like I mentioned here before. And I wanted my team on the other side of the knockout phase facing "sharks" like England, etc.
Because if we do get to the final now everyone will make it look less deserving since we are not facing any "great nation".
But ofc I felt joy at the end at the match. With Romania and Croatia out all I have left is my own national team now. The emotions I feel when supporting each of these national teams are entirely different. Romania was the underdog that I wanted to surprise Europe - knowing that the chances weren't big but still. Croatia were the team playing beautiful football from day one and I expected to see exciting things from them everytime they entered the field. Supporting our own nation...that depends from person to person. But we Portuguese on average are the harshest people on ourselves. And that was called for during the group stage. After last night performance however I am starting to believe that we can achieve great things.
If we were able to make the best team in tournament completely uncharacterize itself and knock them out then I can't help but feel that playing against Poland will be easier of a task in theory since Poland continue to disappoint me apart from those initial 45 mins of yesterday. It's theory however and each match has it's own history. Poland plays nowhere as near attractive football to the one of Croatia but clearly they have a very physical team. This is the main thing to watch out. Then some of their younger players should be well studied and given no space to avoid any surprises. Probably it won't be a pretty match yet again but this is how Santos achieved success wherever he went. I'm sure the Greeks still remember
I think we're now natural candidates to the final and I will be demanding that from the national team. If we beat Poland and if Belgium doesn't flop until the semis...that should be another final then. But I am confident since Belgium were no match for Croatia, so anyway. This is all futurology for now though.
On Monday I want England to give a trashing to Iceland. Quite frankly they have finally got into my nerves. Firstly, obviously for the fact that their last minute win over Austria allowed the match I did not want to happen to take place. Then...there's the extra football stuff. One tries to ignore it but I think they are bit too cocky for their own good at this point. The snotty Lagerbäck (who has always been sort of a douche) comments, those pathetic threats from that freak from GoT or whatever...heh, too much circus. Iceland may have been a neat surprising underdog so far but I believe they need a reality check.
And I have absolutely nothing against Iceland personally. Reyjavík was a possibility in my life before Silvia Night went up that stage in 2006 or Helsinki/Finland entered my life...so it's all just a matter of football, really.
