Thank god to that  but they could still use some annoying DJ in performance as they can't afford bringing the graphics so hopefully they don't get that idea (somew)here. xpray

Would they really be so dumb as to lift ideas from a song that flopped? If you're going to find 'inspiration' that way, at least pick a song that made the final. And DJ's usually work better in songs with a drop or instrumental break, there's no real place to show him off in a song with full vocals.

I do worry they'll find some other way to mess up the staging. Stig has previous experience, but hopefully this will be more GTY and less Play when it comes to that. He was talking about finding people to help them with staging.. hopefully that means someone actually competent and not like those Swedes that made Verona even worse. They got some extra dosh from the participation fees, will that be enough for anything interesting? But I think good ideas & clever vision will be more important than money. We're usually short on all three, but one can hope.

There is no way they'll bring a DJ on the stage, where does that idea even come from  this song doesn't even have a drop and it's not produced by an established DJ. It's not Vallo Kikas feat. Victor Crone

But I doubt they can do the overlay so they'll most likely go for some cheap LED graphics and all Estonians start complaining.

I mean yes, DJ doesn't fit to that song/performance but it's a perfect way to annually ruin the staging after good Eesti Laul staging :)
Complaining is definitely bound to happen whatever they bring  For live vocals alone

Well, assuming his vocals don't somehow get worse than the semi performance, there shouldn't be too much complaining. He still won the semi with flying colors, so if it didn't bother our audience then, why should they complain now? I'm hoping good backing vocals & better sound could help lift him a little, but I guess we'll have to see in May.

We tend to get the staging right every three years as well, our 'big hitters' have looked pretty decent. :) Most of the rest could have really benefitted from better staging tho'. Some countries can polish their mediocre entries to perfection, we seem to kill whatever chance they have by piling crap staging on top.

I'm still surprised they managed to make GTY look so impressive. And did it all by themselves, without the help of foreigners.

Sahlene (the Swede who represented us at Tallinn 2002) wished Victor luck and told him to make Estonia proud. :) (And she's apparently a backing singer for the UK act)

And then they followed up one of our best stagings ever with one of our worst! Talk about a nosedive! Was it really the same team that staged GTY and Play? Seems hard to believe. Perhaps the local staging crews have more influence than we realize. Our team might be too agreeable/lazy, just going "yeah sure, whatever, do what you can", and then we end up with tacky casino backgrounds and weird ugly dance studios. But the card trick nonsense surely had to be our idea. I guess it sounded way cooler on paper. But they really should have seen it wasn't working and made some emergency changes during rehearsals.

I think not until now I understood why I dislike this entry but upon relistening the things became more clear to me.

It's the chorus - that beat how the melody repeats itself in that basic way flowing from the previous points of the song and the pre-chorus without any special pay-off or sweet detail to it but instead hits me on the head with that overly popular beat and that chord change (it goes higher). I actually really like the verses.

I couldn't agree more and that's how it probably all was
But *maybe* Tomi Rahula cares more than Mart Normet and won't let another mess happen? With this kind of song, creepy face close-ups and card tricks seem less likely. But my bet that ruins it this year is poor backdrop and lightning choice.

They really should have kept the lighting from Play's EL staging! It made such a huge difference, having half his face in shadows. In EL, Jüri looked cool and mysterious and chic, a regular James Bond! But with full lights blasting him in the face, he turned into a sweaty little creep instead. Having to focus on his card trick probably didn't help either, should have just let him sing & do the act he was already comfortable with.

We'll have to hope a new team brings some fresh perspective & maybe won't fall into the same traps the old team often did. They should bring along someone really blunt and honest, just for some brutal (but fair) feedback. Who isn't part of the staging team. Being in the middle of it for months, watching endless rehearsals and making all the plans, you can probably lose your objectivity by the end. You've seen & practiced the act for so long, you don't even notice the flaws anymore. That's the only explanation I can think of when our team keeps saying "everything looks great! better than ever! we did really well!", but the end result is a creepy/cheesy/awkward mess on screen. Either their enthusiasm has clouded their judgement, or they know it's crap but are too lazy to change it by that point.

Do we really need to desperately look for ways they can mess up the staging?

Keep the staging as it is. I am happy with Saara too, just make her too stand out more (white dress), so that people would notice her more at first and would be less freaked out when she appears later.

The beginning with Saara did look a little strange, like she was some stranger who wandered onto the stage or something. Just randomly standing there next to Victor. I hope, if they keep her, they'll frame it a little bit better. Otherwise, I'd be fine with keeping the current staging as well. Polish what we have, but no need for a complete re-do. If the CGI graphics go tho', they'll need to rework the ending.

There is a well recorded history with "Storm" and strangers wandering on stage in ESC ... so its fine.

And Laura is really making no secret of thinking about returning to Eesti Laul. She's hinted it in interviews, Insta captions, said "never say never" in comments etc.
They postponed her new pop album all the way from late 2018 to late 2019 so I wouldn't be surprised if they have a potential song ready. :D

Maybe MARUV inspires Laura to return with a seductive smash?

Imagine Laura comes back and wins EL and gets a 3rd NQ in Esc. Has anyone ever not qualified three times?

Laura could use her pole-dancing skills on stage! But I'm not sure our televoters would be ready for anything overly provocative or sensual. All that complaining about Elina Born's 2017 costume.. they'd probably have a collective conniption if anyone like Maruv showed up.

Not sure how good Laura would be at seducing us anyway. We had a taste of it with Verona and we know how that went. Sticking with the futuristic ice-queen look might be a better plan.
