Re: ESTONIA 2019

Easy as that! And if I want to, I can say I want my country to learn from it and not explain anything because it's a random little fan thing to say without putting too much thought into that.

or in other words ...

So this nonsense of "learn from Storm failure" is just some deeply stupid bullshit to show some frustration towards a potential winner before the final even has started.

Glad we agree!

I guess I'm a hopeless patriot or something, but I usually end up rooting for Estonia, even if I don't love the song. I guess if I absolutely hate it, I might think otherwise. If we sent another Leto Svet, I'd probably hope it doesn't reach the final so less people see what horrible mess we've made. But in case of something that's just mediocre or bland, I'm usually still hoping for the best. After the initial disappointment wears off anyway. If Victor should win, I do hope he'll make the final! Won't set my expectations much higher than that tho'.

Same. I absolutely despise Inger's song, but if she somehow wins, I will still be rooting for her. Saturday nights are much more exciting when your country is in the final.

Yeah, I agree. I guess my taste is generic enough that about 50% of the time my favorite wins and if it does not win I usually take this as "the decision Estonians made that day" not as "My favorite didnt win, so I hope my country burns and flops". I dont have a problem of thinking that my taste is superior and if the winner is not the song I like "most Estonians have a bad taste"

I even respected our selection of Leto Svet, because I actually understood why people voted for it (and even kind of agreed). And believe me there is an alternate universe out there where Europe "gets our point" and it does not flop that hard.

What was our point with Leto svet, though? I must be in minority to think that we actually did deserve our results between 2004 and 2007 and like 80% of the qualifiers were excellent. xshrug and "Balkans" deserved to do better because they tried harder.

... or shared the points between themselves better.

Point was that Estonians were fed up trying hard many years, but still always failing to get the result, so GP went with popular comedians who mocked the ESC in general with ultimate stupid song, which was meant to make no sense. It was pretty much a musical "FU" finger to Europe.

Yes, they shared the points, but in the same way we benefited from Latvia, Lithuania and Finland. They boosted us from last place to avoiding bottom 5 in 2005. I don't think that we tried hard with Let's Get Loud, Through My Window and Partners In Crime. In fact, it was definitely our dark time in participation history.

2005-2007 we made some dumb stupid shit decisions
2005 - moonwalk should have won
2006 - Ines-iseendale was miles better than that stupid schlager
2007- we should have sent that great ballad, Hele&Kristjan Kasearu

Oh, I can understand why it won as well. Never got the appeal myself tho', nor found it very funny. Always came off more like sour grapes to me, rather than some clever satire. It might have done better if it actually had a strong catchy melody. I recall many Leto Svet fans honestly thinking we were going to win or do great, but most of the joke acts who did well before always had a catchy tune as a backbone. I don't think most casual Eurovision viewers would have cared about the 'message', even if it was easier to understand. 95% just tune in once a year to find a song they like and vote for it, then forget about the whole thing for another year. :)

Re: ESTONIA 2019

I'm happy when Estonia does well and in a way I always root for my own country, it's just that if I don't like the song, I'm not sad one bit if we didn't qualify. :)

Concerning Leto Svet, I don't really consider this a successful FU to Europe because no one really noticed it. GP didn't like it and forgot it the same night, Eurovision fans hated it then, still do and always will. So.. I don't think it really managed to leave any impact. And the way some people (including the composers) twist it and say it takes an open mind to see the brilliance behind it is a reach. Taking part in Eurovision is way too expensive to go there to just "mock" it, especially with a non-event that Leto Svet was.

If anything, the result made ERR realise that a change of format and a new producer are crucial. Which was absolutely right. Thanks Leto Svet for that!

Re: ESTONIA 2019

I think the 2000s era Leto Svet was trying to mock is really underrated by "professionals"! The "campy" entries just reflect this overall era well - it made perfect sense in the evolution of Eurovision, with pyro, wind machines etc + new countries coming to play. It probably takes some more time before people start appreciating the times. And Estonia failing in those years kinda makes sense because the sent songs weren't too good for these standards. PLUS we only had one large semi most of these years, it's not like Getter or Birgit would have qualified in their years with that format either.
