Drama queen mode on:
I've listened to the whole lineup once and, to be frank, I expected a much MUCH stronger selection since Josef did really well last year and the number of submissions was promising. I agree with @Etanna : not only there is no standout/original song, but most of them actually sound very demo-ish and amateurish.
I'm glad some Czech composers made the cut, but was that really the best submissions they received?
Here's my ranking at first listening:
1. Barbora Mochowa - True Colors: I guess it's a song that will be off the radar, yet it's the one I feel I could gravitate towards the most. As a Lana Del Rey worshipper, I do appreciate the tribute obviously. The song doesn't pull me in as much as I'd like to, but there is something a bit interesting going on, especially during the chorus. And Barbara's voice seem to be the most interesting one of the bunch imo. If she can sing live, I'd give this a chance. With an atmospheric non-OTT staging, it may turn out to be a respectable effort.
2. Lake Malawi - Friend Of A Friend: This is this high only because of the production and arrangements that are way more sophisticated than the rest, the melody isn't too bad either. However, I have two issues with this one: firstly, I wish I couldn't understand the lyrics (it's a story for teenagers) and secondly, I feel like the vocals are heavily autotuned :? With that being said, this is imho the only alternative to "True Colors" even though it's nowhere near as strong as "Lie To Me", let's be real.
3. Hana Barbara - Poslední slova tobě: I'm pleasantly surprised to see an entry in Czech! The melody is kind of nice, and although the production sounds demo-ish, some arrangements actually add a nice touch to the song. Hana's voice is quite OTT at times and, combined with the homemade video, it looks like a parody of a serious song at times. I'd like to see this live just to see if this feeling fades away without the visuals. The production needs a serious revamp though.
4. Pam Rabbit - Easy To Believe: OMG
Nooo! Yesterday, I hoped she would send something more impactful than "Try" but the contrary actually happened: this is much weaker to me! I wanted an urban song, not some retro disco-ish demo. On top of that, the melody goes nowhere and her singing voice isn't pleasant to me, she's better at rapping. I can't imagine this being chosen, it is too shallow and forgettable to be a sensible pick.
5. Andrea Holà - Give Me A Hint: The kind of song that tries to be something it's not. I feel like it's meant to be arresting and dramatic, but it ends up sounding flatter than a pancake. The production is amateur, the melody is nothing to write home about, and vocally it's just there. It has a filler quality to it, if that makes sense.
6. Jara Vimer - On My Knees: That guy seems to have a decent voice and the vibe he was going for musically-speaking was not bad, but the composition isn't convincing imo. If it already gets lost in a 8-song lineup, that is not a good sign.
7. Tomáš Boček - Don't Know Why: I realised this song shares similarities with "Space Sushi" due to the authors. It's strange how it's neither slow nor upbeat, neither quiet nor loud, it's kind of there. There are some nice elements here and there but the whole thing just isn't impactful, and the chorus screams amateur. Very mediocre as is. It would need a radical revamp to actually do something.
8. Jakub Ondra - Cringe Sushi: By far the worst song of the bunch to me: I find it so trite, generic and trashy that it annoys me. Ondra's teenage voice doesn't help. It tries to be cool, but it's not. It's really not. Choose this and I'll be glad to give it a big fat zero in the poll.
If we are to see them perform, I'll look forward to the performances. But right now, I'd root for "True Colors".
