I am baffled by the negative response. Is it because it’s Azerbaijan? Somehow most people have certain stereotypical expectations, which I totally get (I have them too) but Azerbaijan is more than "Always in my heart". In fact they are one of only about half a dozen countries who have been very versatile when it comes to their entries. Not every song of them was my cup of tea but they have surely my respect for trying.
Fade to black scratches the edge of overdramatic, of course, but when did we start giving so much negative feedback towards great singers who show off their voices? While a great voice has been celebrated and valued in Eurovision most of the years it seems en vogue now to mock singers with a strong voice. I‘ve been noticing it for a few years. Where has that been coming from? "Smoke and booze" Cornelia voice isn’t the new standard and far from creative.
Fade to black is featuring the best of Ochman and Sheldon Riley in one. A strong voice, an increasing drama within the song, contemporary elements. If Riley was on his way to Ochman, his road stop half the way would be Rustamli.
But, what can I say, I loved Hour of the wolf (in my top 3) which wasn’t received well at all. (Which I can comprehend because the live version was a little disaster actually).
