Stay
The story barely started
Can't you
Stay
Do you really want no part of this
Oh so sweet
Reverie
You back off slowly through the door
You always go and blame the weather
The weather

It hurts so fast
When love goes bad
Until at last
We fade to black

And I'm numb, numb
Numb, numb

Wait
I need some time to fix this can't you wait ?
We can't afford to miss this
You back off slowly through the door
You always go and blame the weather
The weather

It hurts so fast
When love goes bad
Until at last
We fade to black

And I'm numb, numb
Numb, numb

We're living in a memory
The present is the price I pay
Fade to black
Fade to black

It hurts so fast
When love goes bad
Until at last
We fade to black

After reading some of the comments here I was expecting it to be worse. There are nice elements but it doesn't feel cohesive and I feel like this song is competing in the same territory as "River" . Ochman wins by a mile for me. I'll give it a :6: and place it somewhere between 20th and 25th in my ranking.

The worst Azerbaijani entry since 2008 but still pretty decent. I just wish the ethno elements were more prominent throughout the song. I like his voice apart from a few "enunciation issues" and the climax at the end (this will sound horribly live) but I can totally see this qualify.

3 points for the voice in the studio version.
But this song is a overdramatic, pretentious piece of nothing, with meaningless lyrics. I would blame the weather as well...

This is disrespectful towards Day After Day! That entry kicked ass, my 2nd or 3rd favourite Azerbaijani entry ever I suppose.

The hatred towards this song on this forum is completely unhinged and unjustified in my opinion.

I for one think that the instrumentation is one of the cleanest we've heard this year, and that Nadir could be a potential jury top 5 depending on how well he is able to convey emotions (and the high note) live.

Yes, it's annoying that we had to wait so long for another ballad. And yes, it's annoying that we're getting another sad boy ballad to join the club with Switzerland, Australia, and Poland.

But it's completely unfair to say this is the worst Azeri entry ever - did Samra not happen? Did Aisel not happen? Everyone loves to complain about how Azerbaijan sends Melfest reject pop songs, and now this year they decide to change it up and send a ballad and the reaction is terrible. Geez, I can't imagine why they're hesitant to take risks.

I am baffled by the negative response. Is it because it’s Azerbaijan? Somehow most people have certain stereotypical expectations, which I totally get (I have them too) but Azerbaijan is more than "Always in my heart". In fact they are one of only about half a dozen countries who have been very versatile when it comes to their entries. Not every song of them was my cup of tea but they have surely my respect for trying.

Fade to black scratches the edge of overdramatic, of course, but when did we start giving so much negative feedback towards great singers who show off their voices? While a great voice has been celebrated and valued in Eurovision most of the years it seems en vogue now to mock singers with a strong voice. I‘ve been noticing it for a few years. Where has that been coming from? "Smoke and booze" Cornelia voice isn’t the new standard and far from creative.

Fade to black is featuring the best of Ochman and Sheldon Riley in one. A strong voice, an increasing drama within the song, contemporary elements. If Riley was on his way to Ochman, his road stop half the way would be Rustamli.

But, what can I say, I loved Hour of the wolf (in my top 3) which wasn’t received well at all. (Which I can comprehend because the live version was a little disaster actually).

How are you considering this a risk? Its not a risk at all, its exactly what Azerbaijan has been doing all along. They have sent many ballads in this vein. A risk would be an entry written by Azeris, maybe all the way traditional. But an english ballad written by swedish for a singer that barely speaks english is the recipe they usually follow. And most of the time it works, for me at least, Drip drop for example is one of my favourite esc ballads. I consider Azerbaijan my fav country in ESC, theres not a single entry of them I dislike.
But this is certainly not a risk. And people are harsh not coz its a ballad ( Sweden is a ballad and got a warm welcome ) but because its a very average ballad. Theres no hook and the lyrics are badly written. For me its an ok entry, Ill be listening to it a bit, but I get why people are disappointed.

Ps: Samra's entry was great 💓, it had flavor, at least more than this.

Not a bad song but very forgettable. I've listened to it i think 3 times since it was released and couldn't tell you what the melody is

This has to be tAzerbaijan's worst entry ever. Just so bland and basic, even with the awkward ethnic elements they threw in just to make it feel a bit more azeri. :2: points.

Pretty nice, I expected something more powerful but it's not bad at all. It follows this year's mantra of not really going anywhere in the end. Judging by his other live performances, I'm not expecting much in May.

:7: for now

How I wish this flood of whining guys and their high pitched weltschmerz will be over someday soon!
Yall should have known better before you make Arcade win in 2019. Now this is what you get.

Tbh it sounded worse after the first listening as my expectation was kinda different. However, after few listenings I can definitely state that this is a grower and might do much better than many of us expect.

I usually enjoy Azerbaijan's entries even their ballads. I would considered this song as their 7th ballad throughout the years they have participated. This is my ranking:
  1. Hold Me - 2013
  2. Drip Drop - 2010
  3. Running Scared - 2011
  4. When the Music Dies - 2012
  5. Fade to Black - 2022
  6. Hour of the Wolf - 2015
  7. Start a Fire - 2014
Now I looked back at the 15 entries they have sent (including 2020), I am shocked at about half are legit ballads. In my mind, I always thought we have more uptempos from Azerbaijan.

And also, what's the slandering against Samir and Aisel. "Miracle" in studio cut is so much better than "Fade to Black", Samra is just not as strong as a vocalist. "X My Heart" as generic as it seems and inauthentic to Aisel, at least, it is very listenable and it's my number 1 song from 2018 contest (*BITE ME!*).
