I don't get how anyone can get "provoked" by a dancing woman showing some nice pair of legs?... I mean it's hardly anything pervert or porn-ish we've seen on ESC stage?... or maybe I'm just not as prude and easily "provoked" xshrug

and again the double standards... I mean so far the least dressed we got were Svitlana Loboda's dancers (all male)... but everyone are focusing on all these God forbid "provocative" ladies... xshrug

I guess it all depends on the type of entry, I mean an uptempo dancy booty shaker obviously would look odd with more "subtle" ways (= conservative solutions).

Personally, I'm not shocked by legs! but especially in the ESC, women (and men) often strip off to hide a bad song or lack of talent. And this irritates me because it's a song contest.

You talk about double standards, but you cannot deny that there is a difference between men and women : will we see a shirtless woman in the ESC one day? I don't think so.

No different from Tom covering up his bad songs and lack of talent acting like a bearded lady on stage ;)

Well, based on some comments in here, one could almost think that women have been dancing topless and having lesbian orgies on stage in ESC

Sometimes I wonder if you just do this to stir the pot. Where on this planet did any of us say they have a problem with it? Dude, in all honesty please learn to properly read comments without just throwing these insane accusations around.

The point was it seems odd that Russia is talking about sodomy in this context when in other cases they completely ignore it. I have zero problems with women or men showing skin on stage and doing their thing. But I find it hypocritical so don't put word in our mouth.

It is very difficult to have a conversation with you if your only way to have a conversation is to attack and make outrageous assumptions.

In regards to the Superbowl comparison. Yes, if people would be hateful and quote "family values" and whatnot then yes, I'd be calling them out as well. As a matter of fact I'm the first to criticize my own country and its flaws but two wrong don't make things right.

Is this Saudi Arabia or what? Why are we alway looking down at hot females that are comfortable in their own skin and not afraid to shake what God gave them? xshrug

As for their opposition to Conchita, everyone against that silly act are my friends (no matter the reason)

Didn't see you as a religious person, but there you go.

Anyways, I agree mostly with what you're saying, but the Russian also need a kick up the arse for this nonsense.

Actually, people should read their own comments first then ;) My intention was never to put words into anyone's mouth.

I don't try to "stir things up", some of my responses were even meant to be sarcastic (which obviously didn't get through well). But it wasn't me who used words such as "provocative female performances showing skin blaha blaha"... so perhaps I should read comments better, or perhaps people should realize that their own comments can be interpreted in many ways (and yes, that includes me aswell)? I think it goes both ways ;)

What I meant is that people wouldn't even point out Russian "hypocrisy" with such examples in the first place if they wouldn't find any "provocative" about it themselves.

I'm sorry if I interpreted something wrongly though, now I do see some people think I'm just commenting to "stir things up" on purpose, but I can assure you that was never my intention ;)

I'm sorry. I'm so very gay, but this is just horrible. I would never support something like that.

Why would someone support a silly act like Conchita just because they're gay? I couldn't care less if an act on stage is gay, straight, lesbian, transgender, drag, white, black, blue or whatever... if the entry is good that's the most important. However, what Conchita does is actually hurting the LGBT community more than helping it.

I really don't know where I stand in regard to Conchita Wurst. However, observing the reaction that has come from simply sending a man in a dress with a beard to Eurovision, I think I actually side with Conchita and feel bad for them. If he wants to put on a dress and paint a beard on then so be it. It's no different from everyone else in the mainstream music business. They mostly all play characters. I'm not saying I like this as I actually don't. I prefer my artists to be all about the music.. but still, the hypocrisy is laughable and the undertones disturbing. This is 2013 (almost 14) but it feels like we are going back in time.

Conchita isn't physically hurting anyone however I do very much take notice of the points QwaarJet has made in the past. I can see how Conchita's character can be damaging to the LGBT community in the same way an overly camp, flaming caricature can be. However in an ideal world everyone would judge each person as an individual. In an ideal world everyone would have a brain. I think it's bad enough being gay in my country but I really should consider myself lucky.

That's the problem, we don't leave in an ideal world :/

So much ado about nothing really. I actually sorta like her looks tbh. She's quite striking and mysteriously manages to be almost attractive. It's her voice and her music I don't like. Her previous attempt was simply dreadful and I don't expect to like the new one better.
I wouldn't mind to be proved wrong though.

Her? This is "she":

^ Sure, he is a pure cliché effeminate gay, but still ha "he" nevertheless. Just acting the bearded lady on stage as an only "talent", doesn't really qualify someone as a "she"? xshrug

Conchita is a female first name.

And, well, we don't know the song... That's what I am was cheesy as hell a song, but, before commenting on the character, let's wait for the song. There are and will be other embarrassing entrants you know... With or without beards !

Beards falling down the rooftoooooop ! xrofl3

This guy is named Tom, Conchita is just a stage character like Verka Serduchka was (the main difference is that Verka was tongue-in-cheek and meant to be entertaining - while this is just... I dunno?).

I'm awaiting a big cheese-fest too  I applaud Austrian Television for giving all the ESC-haters and skeptics exactly what they want to see so that they can prove their "point" and everyone else's prejudices about ESC

That again? Please... xsleep

But no, that wasn't she at all. That was someone else. Quite a good looking boy actually. He could almost pass for her sister

I don't see what makes Conchita Wurst so different than Verka to be so critisized, to be honest.

As for ESC haters, they mostly point out the tackiness of the entries - musical wise -, especially during the 00's, not really the acts in themselves.

Plus Conchita is just a man dressed as a woman, there is really nothing to be offended by.

There's a major difference; Verka is a novelty act meant to be entertaining and someone who is honest about being "just an act", this Conchita act though is someone taking himself far too serious but acting the opposite with this act and even acts as if it's not an act when that's pretty much what it's all about.

Conchita Wurst = Tacky galore ... oh and one of the major prejudices of ESC is that it's all some sort of "kitschy gay lobby spectacle", so certainly an act like this is obviously reinforcing those prejudices times 100. If anything, ESC gained some popularity and respect from mid 00's- , because before that ESC had been seen as a relic contest by the masses providing music that were decades behind the actual music trends at the moment.

I don't think it's offensive per se with a guy dressing up as a woman, I do think though the act itself is counter-productive in regards to the LGBT community as a whole. Had this act been like Verka (you know... a tongue-in-cheek novelty) or atleast something like Azis who is all out there and meant to be provocative and thought provoking and somewhat original, then I'd see no issue with it and I'd probably "get the point". However, this is nothing else but a rather talentless (arguable) gay guy acting like a bearded lady on stage while trying to be all serious about it, taking himself far too serious and even gets labeled as some sort of advocate for LGBT rights... atleast that's my issue with this act.

Each to their own though. If I'll like the song I'll be the first to admit it, though I'll never like the act he's doing.

Most people seem to be forgetting Conchita is NOT a real trans person! The act only exists so a man of less than average talent can get attention and a career! That's pretty insulting and offensive if you ask me xshrug. Why should LGBT put themselves on the line for that? Choose the battles wisely cause this is one battle they cannot win against those who hate.

This is not so easy for the LGBT community, a complete no win situation. Stand up for Conchita and your supporting someone who pretty much mocks the community simply because you want to fight against small minded bigots. Criticize Conchita and you appear to take the side of the bigots who will use Conchita as conformation of all negative stereotypes. Now everyone is split and the bigots win xdoh.

The community is suppose to be preaching tolerance and acceptance not division but how can that be done when the subject in question CLEARLY does more harm then good? The last few years have made great steps in the right direction for LGBT rights but Conchita is steps in the wrong one.
