Okay; time for thoughts!
Song review: Some parts of the song are great - especially the buildup after the first chorus, in the second verse etc. I'm not a huge fan of the "ze-e-e-ro" parts, though, and the last minute feels like it loses a lot of the momentum that was built up so well until that point. Overall, I think it's a decent effort, and I'm thrilled to send something weird and different for once (we've escaped the title of "more Denmark than Denmark"!).
Kate herself seems lovely in all the interviews, and she's performed it pretty well (though she's either been assisted by playback in parts or performed certain notes really well with her mouth closed. Hmm). The staging was... a little over-egged, I think, though there's a lot of potential there. This could be super-messy or super-impactful on stage depending on what changes they make (or don't make). All in all, I'm giving a solid-but-not-amazing 7 points on the poll for now, which puts Kate alongside Miki and Jonida as my equal favourites from the current 6 songs. It's all incredibly close though, mind you - nothing I love yet, and nothing I dislike...
Runners-up: Ideally, I think I would've wanted Electric Fields to head to Tel Aviv. And they performed their song pretty well tonight. But I won't complain too much about them missing out, since I think they put up some red flags with that performance. For example, Michael's vocals weren't great, Zaachariaha had good charisma and was great fun to watch but had a somewhat messy stage presence (reminding me a little of Slavko in that manner), and there really wasn't much going on in the way of camera engagement. I'd still have chosen them over Kate, but I can see that there were some issues.
As for Mark – performance-wise, he stole the show for me tonight. Those vocals just overshadowed everything else (I got shivers), and I liked his song to begin with. But I was aware that he had virtually no chance anyway, so I'm not too shocked at his lower result. And I'm glad that Sheppard didn't quite make it, since they were competent but would've represented a fifth year of middle-of-the-road radio pop. The end result is then that Kate - despite being only my fifth favourite from the studio versions, and my third favourite from the night - is a decent winner in my eyes.
Predictions for Eurovision: I think it's very hard to say, honestly. This is clearly a controversial entry, but I count that as a good point - as far as televotes go, being the favourite song of a bunch of people is fine even if loads more people hate you. There's no anti-voting in Eurovision televotes! I was saying the same thing about Netta last year, and that certainly worked out for her. (Not saying Kate is going to win Eurovision, mind you - just that the same principle applies!)
In the end, I think it'll come down largely to what they do with that staging. There's a lot of potential there, but that includes potential for both a hugely impressive standout show and a flaming trainwreck. So at the moment... well, we could be top-10 or we could fail to qualify. Hard to say much past that.
NF thoughts: For a first national final, I was pretty happy with this! Strong song quality, mostly-good live performances, a nice-enough stage, a proper voting sequence and a good winner. The hosts and interval acts were a little lame at times, but on the whole I'm hoping that SBS sees good results from this and tries to set up another NF for next year; this was a fun experience.
