If Australia wins and they want to host it in Sydney, then we can say goodbye to :md: :mk: :ba: :rs: :by: :pl: :ro: :bg: :gr: etc. because it is highly unlikely that they would like to spend money to send their delegations to a continent which is far far away from Europe.

A clue is in the name.
EUROvision

As long as it is hosted in Europe I see no problem with the "friends" of Europe joining, so as long as they're embracing it and having fun. I mean, Israel is always allowed...

And we get to hear fantastic songs like this!

Israel is allowed to participate because it is located within the European Broadcasting Area. Australia is not and by allowing them to participate, EBU broke their own rules.

It's confirmed this is not happening. It's going to be hosted in Europe, but with Australia's help. So basically it will be co-hosting of sorts.
Receipt: What happens if Australia wins Eurovision 2016?

I'm all for including as many nations as possible since what I like about Eurovision is the concept of nations competing with songs, I don't care about the Europe part. Also the aversion of some members towards non-European countries taking part raises a lot of red flags for me, but I'm probably looking too much into it.

So would it be fine if Islamic State, Saudi Arabia or Zimbabwe wanted to participate in Eurovision and EBU happily allowed them to do so?

I know that theoretically it won't happen but EBU broke their own rules so many times that nothing will surprise me. Also as someone mentioned, SBS might be trying to convince EBU to allow them to host next Eurovision in Australia.

I'm not even sure which angle to go at this from. So because of these guys no one else should be allowed? What if a European nation descends into extremist state? Do we kick them out? But if we kick them out and still have Eurovision with everyone else doesn't that mean that it's okay to have African and Asian nations who are not extremist states as well, if that's the criteria for participation? Do you see how many lapses there are in that logic?

You are using the slippery slope argument which does not hold. What if? What if?

Not only because of that. Eurovision is predominately European event, for European countries and countries that lie within the European Broadcasting Area. These are the current rules of the contest. No one should be allowed in, unless they have active EBU membership.

if European nation descends into extremist state, then they should be kicked out and blocked from participating in any EBU event.

It's not okay to have African and Asian nations because it is against the current rules. Also these countries have no cultural connections with Europe whatsoever (with some exceptions, e.g. ::sa). They might organise their own version of the contest if they want to.

I agree.

If people can't stand Australia, a country that has been embracing Eurovision for quite a while now... I cannot wait to see their reaction when the inevitable happens and China/USA are allowed in. The concerns over them countries would be much more valid.

If it says so in the rules I guess. I have not read the actual, official rules, but I'll assume you have since you are putting them in center stage. I don't really have formed opinion on this yet.

Well in my perfect world those rules would be changed. I'm just surprised which arguments you used to go against me, since there were much more obvious ones, like too many participants. Splitting up the contest seems to be the smartest thing to do, but since Eurovision is currently the only such contest, I'm in favor of non European nations for now. Yea when and if Asiavision gets started and becomes a legit thing on par with Eurovision, Australia should probably move there. Also it's probably going to be way more interesting for me then ESC anyway.

Participation of this country is violation of EBU rules and there should be no discussion about that because it is a simple fact. This thread wouldn't even exist if EBU wasn't a corrupt organisation that cares only about money.

I don't care whether they embrace Eurovision. The current rules state Australia has no right to participate in the contest but because they have money they are an 'exception'. Soon there will be more 'exceptions'. Mark my words!

The EBU can do what they like. It's their contest, like it or not.

Of course. They can organise next contest in Pyongyang if they want to. But it would be against their own rules.
They can change the rules but they haven't done it. Instead they are being hypocrites. They welcome Australia with open arms but discriminate against Kazakhstan because 'according to the rules they cannot become members of the EBU as they are outside of European Broadcasting Area'.

Well, It's not a huge loss for ESC taking into account their previous entries. Though I think expensive ticket to Australia is nothing comparing to money which every country must pay to EBU for Eurovision and nothing comparing to money which every singer need to spend to prepare their performance and promotion for ESC.
If Russia wins we would say goodbye to much more countries including someone of BIG-5 due to political reason. :(

Yeah... Fuck the rules! Taxpayers of national broadcasters should shut up. European democracy at its finest!

I actually don't mind if USA would also be invited to ESC. I'd eveluate it positively. Eurovision is just a title and format of wonderful song contest I like. And as more entries we'll have as more exciting it will be.
