Re: AUSTRALIA 2016

In fairness, Australia are more European than a lot of the countries actually in Europe. I have no problem with this exception, and chances are they will put in loads of effort to do well, and not just make up the numbers like some countries.

Not this discussion again, being a former British colony doesn't equal European. We had a similar argument in the other thread pretty much excluding loads of European cultures and somehow making British and to some extent Western/Northern European = European.

Australia is a Western, Anglo-Saxic culture, that's it. Of course that's part of European culture but it's not fair to state that this is "more European" than other European cultures, and regardless Australia is still not Europe.

Effort? If you refer to the lame wannabe American radio pop by the dozen we got in 2015 then I don't see really what this brings to the contest tbh.

I didn't like it much myself, but you are letting your bias against the song get in the way of how many loved it and voted for it. 5th on your first outing is a great result. And I image they will put more effort in this year because they actually have time to prepare.

How could Australia possibly be more European than actual European countries?

Geography does not equal culture my friend. Culturally Australia is very much European. I'm much more comfortable having them in than somewhere like Kazakhstan.

There is no such thing as one European culture, maybe Australia has a similar culture to one of Europe's, but it can never be MORE European than an actual European country. That's illogical and simply not true.

If, for example, the Netherlands would have a similar culture to Japan, is the Netherlands in that case more European than Thailand? Of course not, but that's what you're implying.

Re: AUSTRALIA 2016

Australia does have strong links to Europe through the British colonisation from around 1788 (hence the Union Jack in our flag) Britain did this to stop France or Spain from taking it as they had been down our way exploring around that time and wanting to claim it for their own.

A lot of our past 200+ anglo-saxon years culture is based on European cultures. All my grandparents were British born, my parents were British born and 10 pound poms migrating to Australia in the 1950s so I am a first generation anglo-saxon Australian born with British ancestry.

Of course, the First Australians are Australia's Aboriginal people whose culture probably represents the oldest surviving culture in the world, with the use of stone tool technology and painting with red ochre pigment dating back over 60,000 years. We currently have about 650,000+ first Australians from a total 23,961,600 Australian residents in 2015.

I think it is great that we have been invited back by ESC in 2016 even though I really did think we were just a one off and that was the end of it.

Let's just say that Australia has much in-common with the British culture, not European. But then again, there's still climate, wildlife and geography. It's not irrelevant.

That is true AdelAdel - most people migrate from the British Isles out of an estimated 23.9 million people living in Australia with the vast majority being of European descent. This figure reflects the nation’s history as a European penal colony and the ongoing attraction it has on Europeans dreaming of a better life elsewhere.

I can understand people not wanting us in the competition as we are so far away from Europe - but it is very nice to be invited back to add to the diversity of culture and entertainment that is the Eurovision Song Competition.

Yes, I agree. But I also meant that Australian culture can't be exactly like British culture because of geographical differences. The British celebrate Christmas in winter, whereas you guys do it in summer. You have larger distances between cities and even a desert in the middle, the British don't. And you could bring up many more examples.

While y'all are arguing about politics and other eurovision relevant questions, let me just post something that could easily snatch the trophy

And they want to participate in Eurovision anyway? How dare they? To hell with them, I say! T()

Today I thought about Empire Of The Sun for 2016. :) Not quite my cup of tea, but their performance and their costumes would certainly be awesome! :)

Damn, I watched few The Voice videos and had no idea who the blond beauty on one of the jury chairs was. Did some research like a week ago or so and found her on youtubes. This one is perfect!
