Armenia:
Eva Rivas (2010) speaks to EscDaily.com
Yesterday EscDaily.com had the opportunity to speak to the Armenian National Finalist Eva Rivas. Already a strong contender, Rivas sings “Apricot Stone” in the Armenian final tonight at song number 9.
Eva says on her official facebook support page, “Eurovision is a contest, which I was trying to reach for few years, this is my dream. I now feel that I am on the right track, I’m full of confidence and I know that nothing can knock me from the correct path”. Tonight Eva will sing song number 9, “Apricot Stone”, for the chance to represent Armenia at the Eurovision Song Contest next May. Here is what she had to say;.
EscDaily.com: First Eva, thank you for your time and we wish you the best in the final. For those unfamiliar with you, can tell us a little bit about yourself, your interests and careers?
Eva Rivas: I was born in Russia, in Rostov-on Done. From 9 till 11 years I was the soloist of a popular Armenian ensemble “Arevik” within which I repeatedly became the winner of the Pan-Russian competitions. In 2005 I won the first place at the international festival of young singers «Song of the year of Armenia» where I got acquainted with my future producer Valery Saarjanom. As an Armenian singer I debuted during the award «Tashir 2009» with a composition «Tamam ashkhar». Then other songs, among which «Landzher mardgan” and the song «Apricot stone» which I will represent during selection round.
EscDaily.com: What led to you entering the Armenian National Final? Was it a possibility for several years? Why 2010?
Eva Rivas: The idea of participation has come after the award “Tashir 2009” and throughout the last year we were in preparatory procedures, we were in search of a song with which I could represent myself. Our choice has stopped on a song «Apricot stone» the lyrics of which is written by a “champion” of Eurovision Karen Kavalerjan; a champion since he is the author of 6 songs which were represented during the contest. The composer of the music is the honored worker of culture of Armenia Armen Martirosyan.
EscDaily.com: Can you tell us about “Apricot Stone”. What is the song about and what does it mean to you?
Eva Rivas: The song has very beautiful words and a deep sense. The song is about a little girl whose mom has told her how cruel our world is and that only love will help her to overcome all hardships and obstacles in the way. In order for the girl not to cry her mom has given her an apricot stone. The girl has grown up and has thrown the stone into the soil in order for a new tree to grow by this giving a new life to the wonderful stone.
EscDaily.com: Is the stage show finalised? Can you tell us anything about it?
Eva Rivas: We have prepared very many surprises during the contest of Eurovision which we will present in Oslo if my song wins during the selection. As for the national selection round, the accent here is laid on the song.
EscDaily.com: If you are successful in the Armenian Final, how would it feel to represent your country and perform on Europe’s biggest music stage?
Eva Rivas: Eurovision is a huge experience for each singer. The contest endows the artist with new possibilities for a growth. Alongside, the participation in the contest of Eurovision is a real honour and a great responsibility for the artist because they represent their motherland, culture and nation. I think that in case my song wins during the selection round in Armenia, I will present Armenia on the highest level and I have enough vigor to be the first and to endow Armenia with the opportunity to carry on the Eurovision of 2011 in our beloved city Yerevan.
EscDaily.com: Recently you met the first Eurovision winner Lys Assia. How was that experience? Did she give you any advice?
Eva Rivas: Lys Assia is a living legend. She won in 1956, i.e. more than 50 years ago but she still goes on taking a very active part in the daily life of the contest. It is a top valuable experience to communicate with such a person. Lys Assia, which has seen all the contests of Eurovision with her own eyes, better than anybody else knows all the minute details of the contest. As an advice she has told me to be myself on the stage.
EscDaily.com: Whats is your favourite thing about being an artist?
Eva Rivas: Communication with huge masses of people. I can not imagine my life without that. And also the artists have an incredible rhythm of life. Our life is more unpredictable and more risky and the most important thing about it is the fact that our life is open for the public. I am glad for that. Also I like being able to communicate by means of songs and to be capable to share with everyone with one piece of your soul and to tell them what is deep inside your heart. There are very many other reasons but these are the main ones.
EscDaily: Which singers, dancers or artists influence you?
Eva Rivas: To be frank I have wide-scale taste. However, I would like to single out such tremendous artists as Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera and Indy Aery. Among Armenian singers I would single out Nune Esayan.
EscDaily: Eva are you a Eurovision fan? Do you have any favourite songs?
Eva Rivas: Yes I am a fan of this contest and I follow it with great pleasure year after year. During the recent years my favourites from Eurovision were Ruslana from Ukraine, our Sirusho, Elena Paparizou and Sakis Rouvas from Greece.
EscDaily: Finally, do you have any message to the escdaily.com visitors and Eurovision fans?
Eva Rivas: My dear fans! I want you to know that if it was not for you, either me or my creative work won’t exist. Thank you for giving oxygen in order for my apricot stone to live and grow.
I love you,Eva Rivas
