The funny thing though is I understand like 80+% of Macedonian, but I can hardly understand more than let's say 30-40% of Bulgarian. I don't know why, and people keep telling me these two languages are almost the same while I don't get it.

Well language is like an alive organism that develops and lives its own life, so maybe now something is differ, however you will never ever come to an agreement with these two :D

Anyways, its not a language thread, its a thread for ukranian representative which has his song ( fantastically in English, not in Ukranian omg xfaint) and a good chance to place high in the final because of his overall appearance and charisma.

His English is barely understandable.

I'm so torn. The song is worthy of 8 or 10 points but I still can't bring myself to award Melovin that. I know I'm being picky, but he honestly has probably the most unintelligible English of any singer I've seen at ESC. 6 points...?

Melovin has no original and spectacular song, but this is a really good song.
It will be a good and noticeable performance.
Ukraine is definitely in the finals and probably in the top 10.
Good luck!

^ to all this linguistic discussions, Ukrainian is closer to Polish and Slovakian family then Russian. If we use latin alphabet for Ukrainian, it will look very similar to Polish. Thats why we partly understand Polish. Same goes for Belarusian. I am saying not as 'iamlinguist', but someone who speaks Ukrainian, Belarusian and Russian and understands Polish :D

If you doubt my knowledge then here you are:
SCIENTIFICALLY BIG slavic bunch was devided into groups and subgroups
and Ukranian, my dear, is in the SAME bunch as Belorussian and OMG Russian, surprise, huh? They were united under the common phonetics, syntax and vocabulary phases, which DIFFER thhem from other slavic languages, moreover one unified way of writing which is cyrillics plays an important role here.
Each of three have dialects which INFULENCE other languages from this group.
So despite the fact that ¨Oh, polish get ukranians better than ukranians get russians¨ and other ¨iamnotalinguiststuff¨its a SCIENECE. Deal with it.

...and Ukraine wants to be a contender once again!

It was not the best song musically, but I enjoyed it: a nice power-pop vibe, it sort of reminded me The Killers or even some of the lighter stuff from Muse. The guy really knew how to sell it, the performance was pretty solid, probably the first song this year I enjoyed right away. That dramatic pause will play SO WELL in Lisbon.

Could win? I don't know; doesn't seem like it for now, but Ukraine always has a good support, and with the right staging, a top 10 at the very least is secured, maybe even a top 5.

8 points.

Re: UKRAINE 2018

Woah, you are such an impolite lady, who judges others by their LANGUAGE. xfacepalm What will you tell me? Am I also awful that I speak Russian like Melovin and defend his right on it in bilingual ( by historical reasons) country?

Your reasons might be ok, but this line in particular is just what stands out. Its a musical contest where language of artist plays the last role. Margaret from Poland participates in Sweden for the right to represent Sweden and IMAGINE without knowing swedish! Such a shooook, but in countries whith high level of RESPECT like Sweden No one says a thing about it .If you want to satisfy such countries ( and yeah you want) then stop your russophobia. Celebrate diveristy, huh?

What Jamala does with it? Oh, well, if she is in judge pannel maybe she would put PERSONAL hate to Melovin aside? She critisized his fans, bashing him for being responsible for his fans actions.

About missing another year, well dear, we will come on a power of wheelchair waving our flags and speaking the language you hate the most because Portugal CAN into diversity, in which you, actually, not.

I do not have to explain myself, if you knew where I come from, my history, the history of my relatives, you wouldn't dare to call me impolite. Yes, I don't like it he does not speak Ukrainian. Not even one word. Do I have to be sorry for that? No. Because I was brought up this way. To love my country and my language. And to protect it as well.

I don't hate Melovin. I find his song a pretty decent entry. I simply cannot stand all the fuss around him. Should I be sorry for that? Should I be picked by you for that? Nope.

And about Margret. Does she have a Swedish passport? Without the knowledge of Swedish, I doubt she can obtain Swedish nationality. Melovin is born Ukrainian with Ukrainian passport, representing Ukraine and speaking the language of aggressor. This is the fact. Do I like it? No. Why should I? And I said that (Among all the other reasons that you might have read, but you attacked me for this one specifically). Should I back out? No, I will not. Should I be ashamed of telling my opinion? No, I will not.

And btw, about accusing me for 'causing drama' (by another member of this forum). I think you yourself, guys, are causing it. I simply stated my opinion and you attacked me for this, writing huge posts. And, I guess you are Russian and not Turk. Well, about missing a year I meant Turkey, not Russia. The flag next to your avatar is misleading.

So inevitable happened; Ukraine lost its mojo in ESC.

What was once one of the strongest countries in ESC is now one that chooses mediocrity over complete packages. One that allows unproportional televoting by hormonal teenage girls for the local "teen idol" impact the final results (is this how it's going to be from now on for Ukraine!?), we will have a rather cliché entry with someone trying to sing in English instead of a banger in Ukrainian... this might even be the first year Ukraine misses the final... we'll see.

I'm surprised how some say that "this is the future" and Tayanna was "cliché"... if this is "the future" for Ukraine... then Ukraine has a problem.

Good luck Ukraine... maybe 2017 and 2018 will teach you a lesson not to break a winning formula...

Also love how people who were so quick to judge Tayanna's clothing in the semi now were judging her even harder... her team made a mistake listening to all those haters of the female body who would rather cover it up like they were moral police from Iran or something xshrug... the outfit in the final didn't fit the entry at all... oh well... we lost the opportunity to have Ukrainian language pop banger with a professional singer and instead got some wannabe emo kid... so now it doesn't matter... we'll have two Aleeksevs instead of one...

I can't see how burning piano and his performance can miss the TOP10 in Lisbon. As much as I hate the song and the singer, a performance like that gonna slay.
