It's a very average song for it's genre, but because it's the only country song in Eurovision I suppose people think it will stand out. Who knows, but it's not my cup of tea (and I like country music).

It seems that every 2 years, the Netherlands want to have country songs

I don't get what's wrong with the Netherlands choosing a country song again. I mean, you're not going to complain about another country sending yet another ballad, or another pop dancy song? Every country is free to send whatever they want, and if the chosen artist likes country, go ahead.

I also don't understand the complaints about the "fake accent". I've had several American friends (from the south) listen to this song, and they had no complaints about his accent being fake. It might all not be your cup of tea, but just go ahead and say that instead of coming up with all sorts of excuses why it's not your cup of tea. Because nobody on here is an expert on country music, or country rock. So pretending you are, no matter how long the post is you write. Still won't make you an expert.

And if the Netherlands wants to send country songs to ESC until infinity, they have every right to do so. Just like Sweden has every right to send the same style of song every. single. year.

:nl: may have a country song every two years, but there's something special about this one because i hate 2012 and 2014
(i like 2016, but it was nowhere near the highest placings)

The fact that a song is discussed so controversary is always a good thing. It would be boring if it wasn't so! The more exciting it will be to see how the song will come out finally! :p

NL ESC Country Top 3

1. Slow Down
2. Calm After the Storm
3. Outlaw in 'em

The juries might love Waylon, but the televoters not so much. The song is not very interesting, just solid piece of art, and Waylon is so irrelatable. You see him and you don't want to be friends with him.

THE GOOD:
-Overall, this is a very well executed (albeit run-of-the-mill) country song.
-Another plus is that it avoided the stereotypical country song tropes. What are those? I will talk about these in my verdict.
-It's a head-bopper, too.

THE BAD:
-More of a preference than a bad thing, but I just don't care for country music.

THE VERDICT:
If this song were to be submitted in a country music contest, it wouldn't stand out. But since this is Eurovision, it'll stand out as maybe the only country song in the contest. This is a good country song because it avoids the stereotypical country music tropes of beating your spouse, getting drunk and getting into bar fights, and even murder*; and it does that while still sounding great. Whereas "Calm After The Storm" is more of a Southern rock sound to me, this song is a pure, 100% country song. While I already have my winner in Latvia, I wouldn't mind if this placed in the top five with the right staging. 12 points

*Yep, there are country songs about murder. As one example, the original recording of one of the most famous Garth Brooks songs, "The Thunder Rolls", includes a verse about a wife that shoots her husband dead.

Re: THE NETHERLANDS 2018 - Waylon

Although I do not get the hype the song is receiving, I also strongly disagree with people disliking it just because he 'puts up an accent' or is 'wrongly imitating country music'. It almost feels like you HAVE to be from the U.S.A. to do country, and if your not you are culturally appropriating the genre or something. If that is the case, than we can better also ban Rap and Hip-hop from Eurovision, as only African Americans should have that sole right.

I do understand why some people dislike it though. To me, Waylon is also way to produced and insincere to fully enjoy him as an artist. If that is your reason, I totally agree. But some people go a step further and dislike it just because he should not perform country because it's not 'his genre'. With this way of thinking, I would strongly disagree, I mean we are supposed to celebrate diversity.

You don't have to be from anywhere to do anything. You're free to do it. There's a difference though between taking a genre and taking an accent. That southern drawl isn't natural. It's forced. I find it bothersome. Not the be all and end all, as truth be told, I just don't like his kind country at all, and I don't connect with him or it. I was fair and gave 4 points to something I wasn't digging cause there was still something there I appreciated.

The hip-hop comparison doesn't work for me, as hip-hop is spitting out words fast and in a rhythmic fashion. It's something that quickly went global and people do it in their own languages, and tell the story of their own streets. I didn't know that accents were for sharing around as well though.

It's just an opinion I have. If people enjoy this song then more power to them, but I like music to feel sincere. I think my points for the song would have been the same whoever was singing it, but I will say my piece about it and share what aspects of it don't appeal to me. My main reason is I just don't like the song.

Really wanted to like this, but this is really not the type of country music I like. I find this painful to listen to sadly.

Pretty much this. I'm a country-pop fan but this is god awful.

Guess that's how it is: You are a Country-Pop fan and don't like the song. I am NOT a Country fan and pretty much like the song. So I guess because of his extraordinary way of playing his music, "usual" Country fans might have problems to listen to it. But I think it's good to not always stick to a thing, but try something new. And that's why some like it, some doesn't.

Wait, are you saying we shouldn't go in depth on a forum about music and explain why we don't like something, but instead just leave a quick "this isn't for me" and leave the topic? Would you not rather read why someone isn't feeling something? I know I would. I like to see things explained.

Also, people might not be an "expert" on country music, but who's to say it's not a genre of music they may be very deeply passionate about? I've been close friends with Lavieenrose for some years now, and a while back he went to a concert of one of his all time favourites, Lucinda Williams, who just so happened to have an Americana artist I had quickly fallen in love with opening for her, Aaron Lee Tasjan. My friend took a poster from the concert, put it in a tube and sent it to me by post. We geek out about this music all the time. I know what country music means to him and I think he's allowed his say on it.

These are not excuses being shared. They are opinions.

Well, I just did, but i'll lay off as your response probably means you've eased a little on the idea of other people being able to share their own thoughts, seeing as you can do so also, even with possibly incorrect assumptions attached.

I am quite indifferent about it. It feels like it tries to bask in the glory of previous country style entries of NL.
