Although I do not get the hype the song is receiving, I also strongly disagree with people disliking it just because he 'puts up an accent' or is 'wrongly imitating country music'. It almost feels like you HAVE to be from the U.S.A. to do country, and if your not you are culturally appropriating the genre or something. If that is the case, than we can better also ban Rap and Hip-hop from Eurovision, as only African Americans should have that sole right.
I do understand why some people dislike it though. To me, Waylon is also way to produced and insincere to fully enjoy him as an artist. If that is your reason, I totally agree. But some people go a step further and dislike it just because he should not perform country because it's not 'his genre'. With this way of thinking, I would strongly disagree, I mean we are supposed to celebrate diversity.
Really wanted to like this, but this is really not the type of country music I like. I find this painful to listen to sadly.
Pretty much this. I'm a country-pop fan but this is god awful.
I don't get what's wrong with the Netherlands choosing a country song again. I mean, you're not going to complain about another country sending yet another ballad, or another pop dancy song? Every country is free to send whatever they want, and if the chosen artist likes country, go ahead.
I also don't understand the complaints about the "fake accent". I've had several American friends (from the south) listen to this song, and they had no complaints about his accent being fake. It might all not be your cup of tea, but just go ahead and say that instead of coming up with all sorts of excuses why it's not your cup of tea. Because nobody on here is an expert on country music, or country rock. So pretending you are, no matter how long the post is you write. Still won't make you an expert.
And if the Netherlands wants to send country songs to ESC until infinity, they have every right to do so. Just like Sweden has every right to send the same style of song every. single. year.
Wait, are you saying we shouldn't go in depth on a forum about music and explain why we don't like something, but instead just leave a quick "this isn't for me" and leave the topic? Would you not rather read why someone isn't feeling something? I know I would. I like to see things explained.
Also, people might not be an "expert" on country music, but who's to say it's not a genre of music they may be very deeply passionate about? I've been close friends with Lavieenrose for some years now, and a while back he went to a concert of one of his all time favourites, Lucinda Williams, who just so happened to have an Americana artist I had quickly fallen in love with opening for her, Aaron Lee Tasjan. My friend took a poster from the concert, put it in a tube and sent it to me by post. We geek out about this music all the time. I know what country music means to him and I think he's allowed his say on it.
These are not excuses being shared. They are opinions.
And I'm sharing my opinion. Shoot me.
Well I just did, but i'll lay off as your response probably means you've eased a little on the idea of other people being able to share their own thoughts, seeing as you can do so also, even with possibly incorrect assumptions attached.
