Re: Sweden gives Eurovision a "refugee crisis theme"
I'm going to (try) be the grown-up in the room.
Even if we accept this is well-meaning, and has nothing but good intentions (I think a lot of refugees get a lot of unfair crap, that's the truth, but we can't deny there's a legitime concern of clashing values between European natives and the new communities: YES, TWO THINGS CAN BE TRUTH AT THE SAME TIME), it's still a huge risk for several reasons:
* For a supposedly apolitical event, this is A ENORMOUS hot-button issue: we're not that out of the woods pull something like this.
* Backlash: yeah, we're going to see some of it from some nations: Hungary, Poland, Russia, and if you think this could be only about "backwards" eastern nations, I can actually see some French and Belgium fans being pissed-off and booing at the event. We might argue if they're right or wrong, but you're bringing an unnecessary controversy you could have avoided just to... I don't know, look good? (As if Sweden needed to look even more like a bimbo nation).
* It can still look cheesy and corny: this is Eurovision after all. I can even see some leftists/progressive groups being against this. It would make Sweden look like it's exploiting a VERY REAL crisis with real human suffering, as a propaganda tool. Yeah, let's say it is not, and I think it's not the intention, but I wouldn't be surprised if they not only end up pissing people some right-wingers, but some left-of-the-center guys too.
I'm saying this as a guy that tries to be rational: I don't accept the conservative reality that all refugees are terrorists waiting to exploit the system of their new host nations, but I'm not overly-idealistic either thinking all the race and religious relations are going to go smoothly and with no issues at all. But this, is, once again, an unwanted risk bringing a complex issue to one of the most light-hearted events in the world.
