Re: SPAIN 2018
While id be ok with Amaia and Alfred the only choice for me is Amaia alone with "Al cantar".Iv watched this all season and while enjoying all the young artists iv been really watching Amaia.I see massive potential in her and a rare talent.I spent a lot of time thinking about what sort of song she would get.Making scenarios of Spanish pop, contemporary pop, ballads, you name it.Trying to form an idea of a song that would do well at ESC.Al cantar caught me out if im honest.I thought they had wasted a chance. That it was wrong for her.A little deflated.I was wrong to think that.Very wrong and i should know better.
Watching Amaia start to feel the song, grow into it,expand it she floors me once again. The melancholy of the opening piano brings the vision of a slow waltz. Her haunting opening line, "a chill from head to toe,me,more me than ever" is exquisite. She pulls a deep pain straight from the melody and makes it so absolutely personal."the most bitter crying".Yet then the song is her escape from such things,"the open soul, freedom" when she sings when she Al cantar larai lara. She imagines its how a bird feels when flying, escaping. The more the blows to her heart the more her wings grow,"crecen enormes alas".The narrative turns to hope "no existe el miedo, ya no hay dolor" no fear,no pain, but she leads the melody,it doesnt lead her,she takes charge and then the waltz turns and spins again as Amaia gives us an incredible refrain,"thats what i feel when singing" and takes us with her to the sunlit uplands.
This will be my favourite song of the season i expect even if it isnt selected.Thankyou Amaia.Pure quality.
