I think Russia missed an opportunity to do well this year by choosing a song that didn't fit her vocally. As she was meant to return in 2018, they could have put everything into the composition: one that wouldn't have been that challenging, knowing she would struggle. Honestly, something along the lines of "Taken By A Stranger" would have been totally doable live for instance, and there wouldn't have been any compromise on the musical quality. Either they lacked flair big time or they shot themselves in the foot on purpose.
The final product wasn't as bad as I expected, I did enjoy the performance for what it was, and even the staging didn't look that bad with the camera work.
Anyway, what is done is done. We knew failure was likely to await them this year. At least, they can keep Romania and Azerbaijan company.
If there is a lesson to be learned, it's for them to stop relying on the same old standards and start innovating: ditch their friends-composers, be more daring musically, not being afraid of showcasing their language and talents... But with Moldova in the final, they might as well appeal to Kirkorov for help next year and nothing will have changed :?
It'll be interesting to see what they'll cook up next time.
