Re: RUSSIA 2018 - Yulia Samoylova

Cheese Is Burning…

Yulia knows she can only rely on the Russian diaspora, which votes for every crap coming out of Russia every single year, Russia’s obedient neighbors, which vote the same way, and the pity vote, so she went with another song about herself to collect even more pity points. Of course, her English and vocals are so bad that many people will not understand her message.

Now we know why she wasn’t allowed to join the #PutinTeam: She can’t sing.

0 points, of course, for this lame attempt. The Russians really ruined their chances for this year with their trolling last year and announcing that Yulia would participate in 2018 as well.

I am afraid I am not a big fan of this. Yulia's voice, her english - and the song itself; not something I want to listen to again. I will give this a 4, the production is not bad. And there are definitely worse songs around.

I'm a bit disappointed because I expected something bombastic or trolling... well, I was naive maybe. In any case, the song is not bad, but nothing special either.
I just wonder if her issues with pronnunciation is due to her disability? Does she have these issues with Russian as well?

Re: RUSSIA 2018 - Yulia Samoylova

Ok, I've just listened to the song twice and the first thought that came to my mind is that "I Won't Break" is the most contemporary-sounding Russian entry ever. In this regard, I'm glad they finally sent a song that could well live outside of the Eurovision bubble.

The composition borrows a little from the tropical house trend without being as sickening as all the assembly-line-produced songs one hears everywhere. The song is very mellow and quite easy-listening/lovely to listen to - especially the verses and post-chorus parts - actually the chorus is the part I like the least. It's a bit too simple imo. Arrangements-wise, it's sparse and current: there isn't much to say about them.

Maybe I need more time to appreciate this, because it's not a heart-stopper for me atm, and it could either grow or fade on me. The thing is I inevitably compare it to "Flame Is Burning" which I find much much better than this new effort. But I'm not mad at it either, we avoided another "What If" sequel.

I'm re-listening to it as I'm writing and the chorus isn't that out of place actually. I guess my expectations weren't quite in line with "I Won't Break", but now that they're out of the way, the song is kinda nice (for what it is). It still lacks a spark of identity/originality imo, and as the genre itself isn't usually my cup of tea, I wonder if I won't get tired of it at some point.

6pts for now. :)

the whole thing way too autotune which makes me think live this is not going to sound good and Russia could fail big time.

This is not bad song but it just does not work for me. But good enough for final and for some 15th place there, nothing more, nothing less
I will give 3 points for Yulia

And about her English, it's on same level as well as in Alekseev and Melovin. And I can't get all that obsession with English across Eastern Europe

Do people really think this will finish outside of the top 10 in a weak year like this? That's just wishful thinking. It can easily break 200 points and that has been enough for top 10 in the last two years.

The only thing that makes this song distinguishable from others this year is Yulia herself. There's nothing really here melodically speaking that interests me. Not a bad song but another disappointment of 2018. I'm happy she's been given this chance though.

Re: RUSSIA 2018 - Yulia Samoylova

I expected much worse from Russia after "Flame is burning" last year.
The final result here is interesting and I think I like it. I just wonder about the live performance (I know, I saw the videos of her lives, etc...) but I'm not sold on a good portryal of the studio version.

7 points for now!

WTF moment! Can they bring a LED with this in Lisbon?

No wonder this is crashing with the bookies, it seems like Russia gave up or they are more focused with the World Cup this year... I'm starting to doubt if they will actually qualify (I know, it's Mother Russia, but even in 2011 they barely qualified)

The chorus is so weak, repetitive and bland. Disappointing from Russia.

Well, they start with 50-60 Televotes from Ukraine, Moldova, Israel, Germany, Georgia and Latvia. So only 50-60 more to go. Lets not forget Countries like Serbia and Montenegro who also might give likely Highpoints to it.

Hell - what on earth is that??? Is Minnie Mouse singing or what? Wait ... Daisy Duck? Seriously, that's a bad song. One of the Zero Points again. Never thought that I would do that again after yesterday.

Russia have given up on this year. This will likely be their worst recent result. The song is completely nothing. It starts and ends nowhere. Her enunciation is still hopeless, and the chorus is so autotuned that it doesn't even sound human.

3 points.

average, I liked last year's entry better, because that felt more real, while this feels so fake. Also I think this will be absolutely awful live and I do think Russia could see their first NQ this year. 6 points

Woah, this is not terrible. Shook. Her voice sounds kinda weird though. Looking forward to the live performance in May. 5 points for now ^^
