Portugal skipped ESC in 1970, 2000, and 2002. So no, no 45 years in a row.

Did they actually skip 2000 on purpose? Back then the rules were different, the countries with a lower average points from the previous years would have to skip a year.

No they didnt. 2002 was due to internal problems on RTP, the same as this year.

No, in 2000 they were relegated according to rules at that time. In 1970 there was some sort of boycott against 4 countries winning a year earlier. In 2002 they skipped on purpose.

Ok, then I think we can only count 1970 and 2013 then, because the other wasn't a choice on their own.

In 2002 :pt: was not supposed to take part in the contest. However EBU invited RTP to take part in the contest for which reason I don't remember anymore and RTP declined. :lv: came right after :pt: in the ranking they'd made then.

Yes but the reason was internal problems, pretty much the same as this year's reason.

Do you think there is any chance RTP will still broadcast the event? They did in 2002, but I suppose the interest was bigger than today. Still, I have hope for it!
I think if we look at it, this could be a change to improve the popularity of the contest. In 2003, RTP returned with one of the most popular artists Portugal has (Rita Guerra) and a very strong entry that unfortunately ended in an undeserved bad place.
However, if we return in 2014 with a popular act that is able to bring a great song (my hope is still Aurea :) ), we would have a good result and the popularity of the contest would increase a lot! So, this could be a bad thing, that ends up leading to a good one!

You dont know what you're talking about. RTP spends money on ridiculous shows every year that no one cares about, and they freaking keep on doing it.

RTP like every other public broadcaster in Europe has independent board which cannot be controlled directly by the governments.
For example in Bulgaria BNT and BNR are controlled by independent from the government institution. In this institution there are media experts and they elect the executive director of BNT and BNR. The same applies for most if not all countries in Europe.
