It's quite obvious you live in Norrland and are not aware of the real conditions. There are lots of cooperation going on between Scania and danish capital region. More than 20.000 people commute over the bridge every day, living in one country and working in the other. It's not Sweden against Denmark. Both countries benefit from this cooperation as both countries will benefit from the ESC.
I realize that's how it is down there and that's fine and dandy for everything else in life, but for an event like Eurovision, where one gets to host it the following year after one's victory, it doesn't seem fair that another country will benefit more from another country's victory. In this case, the majority of tourists will fly to, stay, eat and sleep in Copenhagen. Denmark will be getting heaps of tourist revenue from this while Sweden will get diddly squat and we're the ones paying for it.

Do you know anything about the tickets? I mean will they sell locally?

Sorry, I have no idea about the tickets. I just hope I will be able to get one myself. Last time the ESC final was held in this region I took the commuter train over the bridge and watched the show in Copenhagen...

You don't get it, do you? Many swedes are working in Copenhagen mainly in service areas like shops, restaurants and hotels. The money spent by turists in Copenhagen will simply go back to Sweden through them as vages. Besides, I really doubt all the visitors will only spend their money in Denmark and not a single Krona in Sweden.

There are 3 good things about this:

1) Stockholm didn't get the engagement per automatic.
2) It will show Europe about the new Öresundsregion.
3) Less expensive for SVT.

The ESC-fans will suffer though.

Now I honestly hope SVT move the MF final to smaller arena too then Sweden look a little bit less STUPID for Europeans.

And who are working in the danish hotels? Many swedes still living in the Malmö area.

Besides, there will be hotel rooms in Lund, Landskrona, Helsingborg etc. The distance between Lund and Malmö Arena is 22 minutes by train.

As a citizen of Malmö, it seems I need to contribute with some correct information, otherwise this thread is just getting worse and worse.

Firstly, crime is really not an issue here. As every city Malmö has some bad areas, but these are bad according to swedish standards and would probably look like paradise according to the standard of any other european city. As long as you avoid them you can be sure to be safe here.

Secondly, the commuter train lines in the Copenhagen area are totally integrated with the ones in Scania (english for "Skåne", the southermost province in Sweden where Malmö is located). All trains between Copenhagen and Malmö stop just outside the Malmö Arena and the next stop on the danish side is Copenhagen Airport - Kastrup. There is a train leaving every 20 minutes, in rush hours even every 10 minutes.

There are no boats or ships going between Copenhagen and Malmö. All commuting is done via the Öresund bridge, either by car, bus or train.

I can also recommend you looking for hotel rooms to look for vacancies in the other cities next to Malmö. The city of Lund is 22 minutes away by train directly from the arena without any transfer, the city of Helsingborg is 50 minutes away (60 km from Malmö). Copenhagen Central station will be 30 minutes away. Other options could be Landskrona and Eslöv.

The countryside around here is beautiful in May. It's mainly farming country but still with lots of adventures around here. And remember - you will have easy access to the whole Öresund region with both Scania in Sweden and Sealand in Denmark.

Welcome all to Malmö!

Aaaahhh, at last...finally someone talking some sense in here.

As a dane living in the suburbs of Copenhagen I've visited Malmö plenty of times and I've only had good times. People are scared of what they don't know, and this thread is a living proof of that. Unless you go searching for trouble there really won't be any danger - that goes for most cities and Malmö is no exception. Sweden is probably one of the most safe countries in the world and you guys talk about it like it's Somalia. Hypothetically if someone were to be up for trouble I'm sure it'd be dealt with immediately as there will be full awareness on this event.

But the money will go to Denmark. Or do you think money in the Kastrup will go to Sweden? So there are Swedes working in every shop and restaurang? Or wait the genius SVT maybe should mark all shops with Swedes and tell it's only there the tourist can shop, eat ect. You are joking right??? Yeaaaaaaaah, because the visitors clearly want to live in Lund instead for Copenhagen!!!! Sorry stop to be home blind and just accept this is TERRIBLE choice by SVT.

I think it's you who should stop being homeblind and see to the facts instead.

More than 20,000 people commute over the bridge every day to work on the other side of Öresund, mainly people living in Sweden and working in Denmark. You should be surprised if you knew how many swedes are actually working at the Copenhagen Airport.

Not more that Danes and the money from shops still go to Denmark. WOOOOOOOOOOOW 20,000 Swedes!! Oh so much better than Stockholm with 2 millions Swedes right??? The fact is this a TERRIBLE choice!!

I hope it's SVT Malmö who pay for this. If they think Malmö is that great then they can host alone too. I hope it's no help from SVT Stockholm? Why should Stockholm help?

The problem with the Malmö selection is:

1) It has a cooling effect on the Melodifestivalen interest in Sweden. :(
2) It has a cooling effect on the Eurovision interest in Europe. :(
3) It supports the downscaling of the show event :( in favour of focus on the songs. (Ridiculous if not laughable IMO)

The ESC shows should be magnificent, otherwise what's the point? xshrug

Erhm, that's a bit narrow-minded. Whether you like it or not Malmø is a part of Sweden and it should be in their interest to show the best side of Sweden too. This kind of regional tension doesn't really seem like a way to showcase Sweden for Europe.

Besides, Sweden is more than just Stockholm and I think it's only fair that another city than the capital gets a chance. Choosing the host city doesn't have to be either or, it can just as well be a win for everyone. Stockholm hosted in 2000 - and let's face it - probably will again in a not too distant future. Stockholm will get their turn again, no doubt about it.
